yes those ones, not any japanese or korean blah blah, just plain ol chinese.

Young and Dangerous (there are 6 movies, last being the super best)

Man, here's a subject I could go on forever about....

some goodies - please note some of these films are NOT for kids nor the squeamish

Full Contact - triad flick with Chow Yun Fat - Ringo Lam in top form

Fong Sai Yuk - Excellent Jet Li flick with Michelle Yeoh

The Untold Story - Anthony Wong cooks a family and serves them in a restaurant! One of the hardest films to watch I've ever seen. Absolutely unrelenting and brutal - NOT for children

Dr. Lamb - Danny Lee as an inspector on the tracks of a serial killer - not for kids either

Bullet in the Head - one of John Woo's absolute best films

Mr. Vampire - hilarious horror / chop socky film

Story of Ricky-Oh - ever see the guy getting his head smashed in the old daily show segment? It's lifted from this over the top chop socky gore fest that has to be seen to be believed - almost like a Kung Fu Dead Alive!

Zu - Warriors of Magic Mountain - Fantastic sorcery / kung fu flick from Tsui Hark

Storm Riders - excellent cgi / story / kung fu - think crouching tiger/hidden dragon

Heroic Trio - Michelle Yeoh, Bridgett Lin, and Anita Mui kicking much ass as a trio of superheroines!

that's enough for now...but I could reccommend a whole lot more :D
 
i love asian cinema...here's a few favorites...

a better tomorrow
a better tomorrow 2 (these 2 movies set the standard by which all action movies are measured to this day)
the killer (before leon: the professional)
once a thief (light hearted john woo/chow yun fat)
hard boiled (the best of the woo/fat movies i've seen)
city on fire (tarantino borrowed from this to write reservoir dogs)
fulltime killer (fun movie, but not great)
time and tide (has become one of my favorites of all movies...tsui hark at his best)
once upon a time in china
iron monkey
crouching tiger hidden dragon (some of the best cinematography ever...just beautiful)
the eye (some of the creepiest visuals i've ever seen in a movie)
bangkok dangerous (good story, and one of my favorite all time endings)

and if you're cool you know kurosawa...absolute genius writer/director...
seven samurai (magnificent seven)
rashomon
hidden fortress (star wars)
yojimbo (fist full of dollars, last man standing)
sanjuro
 
I just finished watching Jiang Hu and I find myself a bit disappointed. Since pretty much half the cast was from Infernal Affairs, maybe I was expecting too much. While the story was good, it was lacking direction. It seemed incomplete to me.

A good one not mentioned is Running on Karma. I thought the movie was going to be absolutley horrible after seeing the cover of the DVD but it surprised me. There was quite a bit of depth to the plot and it makes you think towards the end.
 
I like Japan.

Kozure Oogami, and Zatoichi.

Kurosawa also pushes the envelope.

On the downside, stay away from Legend of Suriothai. It's very stereotypical, and unfiltered.
It also ends without a few finishing touches.

I also gave Zeiram a shot, back in 1999, I think, and it really sucks.

I'll stick with my Kaiju!!
 
My favorite Chinese films are...

Hard-Boiled - definitely the best John Woo/Chow Yun Fat movies, one of my favorite movies of all time.
Drunken Master 2 - My favorite Jackie Chan film

Now... for some not so violent stuff...
King of Masks - I currently consider this my favorite film of all time. Excellent drama about conflicts in culture and tradition.
Wedding Banquet - Great drama/comedy. My favorite movie by Ang Lee. Eat Drink Man Woman is good too.
To Live/Raise the Red Lantern - Zhang Yimou/Gong Li period pieces.
 
Greatest Classic Chinese Film : Five Element Ninjas (AKA Super Ninjas, Chinese Super Ninjas)

The best of the Chang Cheh/Shaw Brothers collaborations (imo). The dubbing is pretty silly at times, but it doesn't take away from an awesome martial arts action piece with tons of weapons combat and a cool (if simple) story.


Greatest Modern Chinese Film : Hero

Beautiful, inspiring movie with some of the most impressive action ever filmed. Easily the best film of 2002/2003 (imo). Finally coming to US theatres sometime in the summer or fall.
 
I just got a copy of Battle Royale, great movie. It blew my friends minds to see that many HS kids get smoked in one movie. I'm sure it would have a even bigger cult following if there ever was a domestic version out.
 
I just watched young master, it has the longest fight scene without props in a jackie chan movie ever. I highly recommend it, as it was just released in the US(region 1) for the first time.

Lol speaking of that I just got the Kurosawa samurai boxed set, and the 2 disc dvd of a better tomorrow 1 and 2. Thats a good list but I hated Fulltime Killer and the Eye. Also everyone should be held down and forced to watch The Killer and Hard Boiled. I'm thinking about buying A Bullet in the Head soon, and Rashomon, tried buying Rashomon online months ago but never got it.
