LIVE Scheduled Downtime September 29

bubbafett4hire

CAGiversary!
Ok boys and girls, Xbox LIVE is having a scheduled downtime on Monday, September 29 starting at 12:01am Pacific Time. It will be down for 24 hours as we prepare for the cool new stuff coming your way in the new Xbox experience.

Keep checking back for more information on the goodies we have in store for you this holiday.

*To clarify, Xbox LIVE will be down as will those sections on Xbox.com that rely on the service such as "My Xbox". Also, the forums will be viewable but you won't be able to post in them.

God damn I'm already really tired of the phrase "Xbox experience." I think the updates look pretty awesome, but I hate how marketing people name shit. They might as well just call it "Xbox Xtreme!" or something equally stupid.

The only thing I'm going to experience is extreme irritation if I can't give my Avatar long, flowing hair made of fire and a shirt made of paperclips.
Are they going to credit everyones' accounts 24 hours for the d/t?
HA! No. MS reserves the right to do these kind of things and it would only be about $0.26 for 1 day of XBL. I just hope the new dashboard/update comes shortly after this downtime.
Omg 1 day of downtime, Go outside :p
the problem is that it is down basically all day, not just a small portion of the day. i love people who say stuff like this since 3 times out of 4 they will usually be one of the people complaining to MS for free stuff. the fact that we pay for the service is why most people (myself included) expect better than this. i have no problem with a small downtime (meaning a few hours) in order for them to fix things up, but for a lot of people i would imagine playing games would be a form of stress/anger relief and not being able to do this when they feel like it after paying $50-$60 year round for this is a bit of a problem in my eyes, especially considering it is only to prepare for the new update and isn't the new update itself.

I don't give a fuck if it's down for an HOUR, after the bullshit from late last year where it was constantly screwed up, they should be crediting us for ANY downtime at all. And I don't mean with another free mediocre game.

Looks like I might actually have to plug in my PS2 on Monday and play it, instead of my 360 (it needs a break anyways). Hopefully the update is available shortly after this downtime.

And why not Tuesday night, that way I can watch new release movies? Curse you Xbox!!!!!!:whistle2:#:bomb: ikik

Its 1 day. It isn't even like you Xbox is broken, you just can't go online. Play some single player.

I'm surprised how upset some people get over XBL being down a few days out of the year. My internet service goes down more often than that.

One thing that sucks about this is in order to play xvid off of a thumb drive you have to be signed in online.. Guess no home movies for me monday night...=(

In the terms of agreement that you agreed with it says that ms is authorized maintenance downtime on live. If you have a problem with that then quit playing on live once your subscription runs out. It's 24 hours for gods sake.

This thread is a testament to the climbing rates of obesity in the United States, I simply can't believe some peoples responses to Live being down for one WHOLE day. Seriously people look at yourself in the mirror.

Maybe some people only have off on Monday?

I was off (school and work) on Wednesdays last semester (or before that; I forget) and that was the only day I could play video games. Xbox Live had maintenance that day and I could play. I got a little pissed about that.

:applause: Truth.

The one day im sick and get to stay home from school...>.<
Its Pacific time, can some one say when it will be back on EST time? I always mess up time conversions.

Yes. Tomorrow (Tuesday).

True dat, wish I could buy XBL by the hour because I'd be saving some money over a yearly subscription.

My only problem with this is that I can't play any of my XBLA titles, as I had the Rrod and am no longer on my original console.. I am unable to play most of my games because I have to be online to do so.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem.

In closing, those criticizing others for being upset should shut the fuck up and move on to the next topic.

Didn't they fix that with the DRM managment thing on Xbox.com? I'm sorry you're going to miss a day, but you might want to look into it for any future downtime.

Speaking of downtime, I don't really care if this means the "Experience" (Just call it the new dashboard/OS already!) is soon upon us, I just hope this means the back end is better prepared for the stress from the update and, hopefully, the holiday season.

exactly, as long as there is no really huge downtime after the release of the new dash and prevents the crash of live like last year i will be fine with it. sadly, i don't think that this is going to cover the holiday season additions which is going to mean more downtime when they prepare for that.

i don't think they actually completely fixed the DRM management problem, i think you can re-download the titles once a year or something like that which means if you get 2 RRoD's, you are out of luck once live goes down. also, not everyone has all the time in the world to go back through the games they downloaded and re-download each and every one of them, i know people with 30-40+ arcade games easy and that would take them a few nights without actually playing to be able to do this, which usually means they won't do it since they are almost always connected to live when they play.

Now that is the truth! I was thinking the same thing. Luckily i'm unemployed now! but before my days off were Mon/Tues and Tuesday my wife had off so that was our day off together, leaving monday as my 360 day. If I was still in that situation I'd be pissed and vent but would just be frustration.

Don't forget, your 360 can be set up to download information while it's powered off.

With a little time management, and a sense of what you're actually going to play 1st out of those 40 games, you could be coming home to an updated library.
If this is going to be the new update, I'll be very happy.
If not, oh well...
I think it's just to get stuff on their end ready for the new update. All hints point to that not coming until November. Anyway, no skin off my nose as I'm not playing much on Live now anyway--really just the Thursday night CoD4 CAG matches.
OMG no XBL!!!! This is how the world ends
not that you will understand this considering the way you posted, but what if it were your only day off of work for the week, you pay on average $50 a year for live and you get maybe a day or two a week to play online. wouldn't you be annoyed if the servers got shut down on one of the very few days that you actually had time to play after paying all that money? i am actually using my time to catch up on some single player games that i wouldn't end up playing if i had live on, so it isn't really a big deal to me right now. however, i do understand people being annoyed by it and think that others should be more understanding about it instead of just being rude.

It's one fucking day people. I could careless that this could be your only day off til next week. Go outside and ride a bike, play sports, or exercise.

Frankysox comment was great by the way.

Agreed. And it's right there in the terms of service that they can take it down for maintenance.

People shouldn't be pissy because they have shitty jobs and only have off on Mondays, especially if the job pays so poorly that they have to whine about getting ripped off since they paid $50 for a year and are not getting 1 day of service--which comes to about 14 cents a day.

Not to mention people's lives should be so consumed with gaming anyway. There's tons of other shit to do! I wish I wasn't at work so I could do something else! And gaming wouldn't be high on that list!

except they are basically losing more than one day of service since it is their only day off. they are paying for the rest of the week when they don't get the chance to play, so in reality it really ends up costing them more than 14 cents a day. lets put it this way, maybe they only pay by the month and i believe a 1 month subscription is $7.99, though i could be wrong. anyways, they are paying about $8 a month for 4 days of service since they have 1 day off a week, take away one of those days and they are paying $8 for 3 days of play, now wouldn't you be a little pissed if it were the same for you?

i love all the ignorant comments in this thread, i know each and every one of you plays more than this amount of time probably in a week, so it wouldn't matter much to any of you. i know when i was working anywhere from 40-55 hours a week at my last job, i didn't want to go outside on my day off considering i had to stand for most of the day at work, i just wanted to sit back and play some games for the service that i was paying for. anyways, this is my last time responding to these types of comments, i am just going to ignore the rest of the people so this doesn't turn into a flame war.

edit: also, maybe if xbox had a pay by the hour or even day type of situation this could apply, but as long as they make people pay for at least a month at a time without any sort of reimbursement, than i will disagree with anyone that has a problem with people being annoyed by live going down when it isn't even an actual update.

I know it sucks for people that use it and happen to only be able to play on Mondays. But gaming shouldn't be that big a deal to people, nor should any hobby IMO.

Not worth all the outrage. Should just be a "well that sucks" and move on to doing something else with your free time.

I play on live maybe 2 hours a week for the CAG COD4 nights (and probably game 5 or so hours a week on average total), and I wouldn't really be annoyed at all if this outage had been on a Thursday. But of course, I'm mainly a single player gamer and $50 a year isn't shit to me so I'm different that a lot of people here who have tight budgets and mainly play games online. Plus gaming just isn't a big deal to me anymore, despite posting on here from work a lot. If I had to give up a hobby, gaming would be the one to get the ax.

But still, no reason to blow up over a maintenance outage. It's just a necessary evil in running an online network. It's going to have to come down from time to time to upgrade things. Personally I welcome it as I can't wait for the update as my 360 will get a lot more use when the Netflix functionality is active.

Trust me i know how it feels, I actually got cut off in the middle of a game with all my friends yesterday night only to realize that it was the 29th at around 12:30am, I pay an average of $30 a year since i'm a CAG, but the thing is, the maintenance was on the website, sent to you over XBL, and was sent to your email. Unlike Sony they made it clear that it was going to be down today. I actually want to play on XBL right now. But one day is about $0.13 if you pay $50 a year, $0.13 is nothing to bitch about IMO.

I'm not sure if you pay for you DSL/Cable service, but every now and then they also have maintenance, which will knock off your internet and XBL. I'm not sure what kind of job you have, but mostly everyone I know works no more than 10 hours a day and 5 days a week unless they are on some serious overtime. I usually don't go to sleep after work either, and on my day off the last thing I want to do is waste my day on XBL. If you have more than one kid, I would understand being tired though.

like i said, i have no problem with downtime as long as there is actually an upgrade coming along with it at the same time. i see nothing special coming out of today's downtime since it is only in preparation for the actual update. i play games mostly online since i get distracted easily if i am playing by myself. even if i can't actually play a game online today, i think it would be nice if i could still message friends and private chat on there so that i could sit there and really play.

i just think it is a bit annoying for people to come into a thread and start bashing on people when most of them end up playing games more than the person who is complaining about the downtime. for you it may not be a big deal since gaming isn't one of your main hobbies, but for someone who uses the little bit of free time they have to play a game online after paying $50 a year (doesn't matter whether their budget is tight or not, the fact that they pay for a service and can't use it when they want i think that is a bit ridiculous), i can understand it being a problem. my main problem with this thread is that i find it very ignorant for people who i know play a decent amount of time to come in here and criticize others about their gaming habits.

I ended up getting the night off work since I worked the weekend and was heading home thinking of relaxing and playing some Battlefield and CoD4 that I haven't played in ages. Got most the way home and I remembered XBL is down haha oh well no big deal. Still gonna relax and game the night away just gonna finish up Mercs 2 everything except the online stuffs so I can trade it in and then probably start Condemned 2. YUP that's my plan!
so says the person trolling a video game forum website.....
I knew one of you clowns would say that. I woke up, worked out for 2 hours, then showered. God forbid me to spend a tiny bit of time on the internets...

i am not referring to myself for these things since it doesn't apply to me. i spend a ton of time playing games right now since i am unemployed without a way to get anywhere at the moment, i just have a problem with people criticizing others gaming habits when i am almost sure the majority of the people doing it play more than their fair share of games. your comparison to cable doesn't really apply to me since mine very rarely ever goes down at all for maintenance and at least when they do go down, they are actually doing an upgrade instead of just preparing for that upgrade.

i just feel that people don't understand that it is only 13-14 cents for these people, it is basically a couple of dollars of their subscription since they can only use it 3-4 days a month depending on the times they work. so figure it is about $2 a day in their case (assuming they are paying by the month) and then they end up wasting that $2 since they can't actually play a game at all online that week. i just think it is highly rude for people to come into something and give these people crap about wanting to play a game online without knowing their actual lifestyle, but whatever, i am done responding to everyone now (i think).
like i said, i have no problem with downtime as long as there is actually an upgrade coming along with it at the same time. i see nothing special coming out of today's downtime since it is only in preparation for the actual update.
What difference does it make it the 24 hour down time is a couple months ahead of the update vs. immediately before the update? It's 24 hours you can't use Live either way. They probably have to upgrade their hardware before they can update the user software. Better to do that first and get any kinks on that end worked out before launching the whole thing.

my main problem with this thread is that i find it very ignorant for people who i know play a decent amount of time to come in here and criticize others about their gaming habits.

There's a difference between people who game a lot, and people who do little other than gaming to the point that you get this level of bitching about a 24 hour outage. I mean I got the griping last winter when it was down for nearly a month. But I don't see the point in being upset over a 24 hour maintenance period that was announced in advance. Updates and maintenance happen on all networks, and outages are required to perform them.

I don't mean to be insulting people who love gaming as there main hobby. But jesus this is making a mountain out of a mole hill.
