Looking for a really good RPG.

CAGiversary!
Hi. I'm looking for a really good, addictive RPG for PS2 (or GC). The last few ones I've played I haven't been able to really get into, if you know what I mean. I liked them for the most part and completed most of them but never really got into them, and it times it felt like a chore to play them.

Examples of RPGs I've really liked are Tales of Symphonia, FFX, Shadow Hearts Covenant (took me awhile to get into though), and Dark Cloud 2. I never got into Baten Kaitos, Chrono Cross, or Riviera: The Promised Land (GBA).

Here's my collection so you know what I have: http://users.ign.com/collection/strebor542

I was considering Atelier Iris, but it's new and still $50 which is a bit expensive. Anyone have any ideas?

Buy a Super Nintendo and get Chrono Trigger and Earthbound (or ROMs if you're into that).

i loved Tales of Symphonia, i hated FFx, and i just bought Atelier Iris. so far, Iris isn't that bad. the battles are the generic RPG kind where you take turns and what not. probably the only "new" thing about Iris is the whole alchemy thing. you can take most objects and just whack your staff at it to take the elements from the object. for example, if you smack a wooden box, you'll get ~4 elements of wood. you then use those elements to make items that you can then use in battle and what not.

as for addicting, i'd say it is. i bought it two days ago, and i have over 15 hours in it. it's addicting because you're always searching for items you've never seen before so you can then synthesize it with other items to create new items and then you can probably synthesize that with something else and....

I don't really see a pattern in your likes and dislikes, but I'd recommend Xenosaga Episode I if you like large amounts of (incomplete, sci-fi) story, and a strategic battle system. I recommend Kingdom Hearts if you like Action RPGs and can deal with the fact that it's mostly Disney characters. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Xenogears, my favorite game of all time. It has the best story you'll find in a game, but the PS1 graphics are old, the text can't be sped up, and some people don't like the battle system.

I am sooooooo in LOVE with Atelier Iris. I recommend it to any Lunar fan or a Working Designs fan. If you are an older gamer or someone that likes their RPGs fun & lighthearted AI is for you.

If your style is for more serious RPG, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time has tons to do and should keep you busy for 50-60 hrs.

If you like to race through RPG I can't recommend SO3 or AI:EM. The .Hack games are great for gamers that rush through games.

If this doesn't help I have more recommendations (I have been an avid RPG gamer since the NES days.)

Sounds a lot like Dark Cloud 2, which is good. They just called it synthesizing though, not alchemy.

There isn't, unfortunetly. All well known, most considered to be very good games. I wish I knew why, I hope I'm not going off video games or something.

I'm not really one to race through RPGs, I'm actually kind of slow. I generally log 60-70 hours on most games. I've been considering the .hack series for awhile, too.

Atelier Iris sounds really fun though, I like light-hearted games... is it really worth the full $50 though? I can't find it anywhere else for cheaper (not even ebay).

Here's a recommendation:
Bard's Tale: I like it because of past memories of the original on the Apple IIe. But also it's a stereotypical RPG that makes fun of how odd some RPG situations are. for example, creatures dropping items they should not carry. Also it's like 10-15 dollars right now at EB. You can finish it in probably 20-30 hours though. But it's an amusing action-RPG.

I am only 30hrs into Atelier iris but it is the "Funnest" RPG I have played this generation.

If you don't want to spend $50, get Arc the Lad:TOS, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean 3 or .Hack 1. All great (cheap) games.

If you want an underrated (yet still not great) turn based game that involves a lot of free roaming and landscape, then go for Ephemeral Fantasia. You should be able to get it for $10 or less used.

If you want a better game that doesn't require as much patience and exploration as Ephemeral Fantasia, then I'd suggest Eternal Ring, made by the same team that created King's Field, Eternal Ring is a very enjoyable (and truly underrated) first person adventure that puts a heavy focus on magic crafting through gems you find from enemies. Eternal Ring is $5 used at Gamestop or EB.

The Summoner games, even though I own both, I haven't played. They do look like pretty good, and for a price of $5 for the original and $10 for the sequel, you can't go wrong unless you're dirt poor.

Also, I heard Legaia 2 was good, though not as good as the original, and it goes for about $10 used (or new if you can find it new).

I second Atelier Iris. I'm about 20 hours into it and I'm hooked. It's light hearted and fun and the soundtrack is great. Plus the boss battles are actually a challenge and the synthesis and item collection actually pays off (w/ photo album and music unlockables). It's damn good.

If you're a fan of Studio Ghibli films or a monster collecter kind of guy, check out Jade Cocoon 2. It's pretty cheap, around $15 or so used at most stores. This is the only RPG I've ever felt compelled and interested in finishing, though the boss was just too strong for me at the end, so I haven't finished it completely, but I'm at 60-70 hours into it right now. Here's a link to a review from Gamespot, which they gave an 8.1 and you can see if it interests you.

Or he could just get Final Fantasy Chronicles (I believe) for the PS.

If you don't mind extended periods of loading for everything, then this is an option. Although EarthBound didn't appear on any PS1 compilations...

And yes, Atelier Iris is worth every penny of its retail price.

I feel the same way about Atelier Iris, I'm totally loving it. It harkens back to ye olden days of classic RPGage.

Skies of Arcadia for Gamecube isnt for everybody either, but i rank it up there with Grandia 2 (Another great RPG, better on Dreamcast, but still pretty darn good on PS2)

Thanks for all the great recommendations. I picked Atelier Iris up a couple of days ago and logged 3.5 hours that night on it. I plan to play a lot more today, it's a really cute and silly game.
