Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I recently moved into a house and am looking for a good router for some online play. I bought a Linksys cheapy at Best Buy for $60, and am suffering quite a bit of lag.

Just looking for some help on what other people use and/or what they could suggest.

Much appreciated!

The same answer I give in every other thread about routers made at least once a week:

WRT54G

Apple Network "fanboy" here. Spend the cash and get yourself an Airport Extreme. I've personally had too many issues with D-Link, Linksys (Old Blue's, Never used the new Discs), Belkin, & Netgear.

Why in the hell would someone pay $180 for a horribly overpriced apple router when you can get a proven/reliable wrt54g off ebay for less than $20 and then throw DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index) on it and make it do whatever you want?

Seriously, apple fanboys boggle my mind. I bet when they announce the iPad Nano, you are gonna run out and buy 3.

I'm no apple fanboy, I just love their networking products. And since I've been burned by the brands I've listed that was what I suggested. I've take it you've never used or interacted with it huh? $180 is fairly reasonable when you're looking into home networking. (Have you seen any of Cisco's Networking products?) Your $25-$50 suggestions are for the budget home networking setup.

While I'd agree that DD-WRT would be the way to go on the WRT54G, what's to say the OP isn't that technically capable to perform that installation?

I have a desktop, laptop, 2 iphones, DS Lite, PSP, 2 Xbox 360's, PS3 and wireless printer all using the WRT54G without custom firmware with zero problems. What ridiculous setup do you have in your house that requires a $180 Apple product to connect to the internet?

Agreed, as a WRT54G with DD-WRT owner... I wouldn't recommend it for my grandma (unless i set it up). It's fairly easy to brick your router if you fuck it up. However, I wouldn't call $180 "reasonable" for home networking. Business yes, home no.

At the same time, the Apple networking products are great, but my airport express does not behave itself at all. All I use it for is music streaming and it constantly needs to be reset (every 5-6 weeks). IMO great products, but way overpriced.

If the OP is at all technically proficient, get a WRT54G, put DD-WRT on it and call it a day. I've had a great experience with mine. Running 2 iPhones, 2 Desktops (one wired as a torrent server and one media center), 2 Laptops, a Roku box, 360, PS3, wii, Ds and PSP.

I own 3 Desktops, 3 Laptops, 2 iPhones, 3 DS Lites, 2 360's, 2 PS3's & 1 Wii

But, in my house at any given time there are up to:

6 Laptops, 3 Desktops, 6 iPhones, 8 DS Lites, 4 360's, 3 PS3's & 1 Wii

I have Multiple Dual Band Airport Extreme's to prevent the network speed issues as well as to serve as multiple access points in the house to prevent signal loss.

My Airport Express' are also very very finicky. I usually have to have 1 for each type of use. Trying to switch between configurations results in me wasting an hour or so making it work correctly.

Yeah..you are really selling me on it now.....

Well, I have no clue what DD-WRT is so I think that gives you all a good idea of how tech I am when it comes to networking.

I can plug the wires in...and that's about it.

EDIT: Though, if it's something somewhat simple, I could probably do it. I may look up the procedure online and see what needs to be done and go from there.

Thanks all!

You should still go with something comparable to a WRT54G. I don't have custom firmware on mine and it works like a champ.

That's the Express. That's not the Extreme. Consider the Express as a "travel router". It's pretty much going to require configuration every time you travel to a new location.

I'm not here to "convince" you into anything. I've voiced my opinion and was subsequent labeled an "apple fanboy". It's just my opinion and you're entitled to yours as well. :D

I labeled myself as a Network fanboy. While their products are nice, nobody should ever spend $2000+ for a computer.

I was then labeled just a fanboy and was told I was gonna go buy 3 iPad nano's

So you assume the OP is technically incapable of setting up DD-WRT but suggest he buy an apple product that you seem to have to mess with a lot/configure/have multiples of for network usage?

Why must I continue to feed the troll????

Since your reading comprehension has failed (supposedly), let me help.

DD-WRT works on the WRT54G. That is what I said. I made the assumption that the OP wouldn't be able to handle the installation process of that. (Assumption = Correct BTW as confirmed by the OP)

Since you ignored my response to the "Airport Express", I'll acknowledge it again.

This is the Airport Express
http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/

It's purpose is mainly for "Music Sharers" or "Travelers". You apparently aren't the latter as you would understand what I meant about having to configure it every time you encountered a new network. As it's a "Travel Router" you're essentially creating a new personal portable network every time your location changes. There are configuration profiles that can be stored for more the more frequently stopped locations. But it still requires configuration at least once.

This is the Airport Extreme
http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/

This is essentially your "WRT54G". It's a router. It performs the same duties as your precious linksys (w/DD-WRT). I have not had 1 problem with my Base Stations. They're essentially the set it and forget it types.

The reason for the multiples is to act as access points within my network, not to work with the # of users at any given time. You do know that signal strength has an effect on your wireless speed right? But this discussion would be better suited for a network tech, and I'm gonna make another assumption (hold on to your shorts) and say that you aren't one of those either.

As this is all the energy I have for you this ends my entry into the troll feeding game.

lets start over....

1. Which model of linksys did you buy?
2. How fast is your internet connection?
3. What are you doing your wireless gaming on (console, PC, portable)?
4. What type of internet connection do you have (cable, satellite, dsl, fiber, etc)?
5. What settings are you using on the router?

Chances are the lag has to do with your setup and not with the router itself.
