For once a company released a collectors edition that was actually collectible. The whole thing with the Disney vault is kind of annoying, but its also very effective marketing.
In some ways it's effective because it creates demand but it seems like Disney could also sell more of their DVDs than they do. All Disney releases are discontinued at a certain time and then become unavailable. Some titles like the Disney Treasures are limited to 150,000 copies each. That's ridiculous. I'm sure there are far more than 150,000 people willing to buy classic Disney cartoons.
The tins are limited 150000, the dvd's themselves have been distributed other ways (costco bundle). Also, when a disney dvd goes into "The Vault", its not pulled from the shelves, its sold through...so there were already millions of copies sold. It also makes a secondary collectible market that fits with everything else they do.
The thing with the Disney Treasure releases is that even including the non-tin releases there aren't many more available than 150,000. The stand alone non-tin Treasures were only made in quantities of 10,000 or 12,000. Ironic that there are far more tin versions. I'm not sure how many of the bundles were released but it was fewer than the tin versions. I know when Disney releases go into the vault they're not pulled from shelves it just means that production is stopped until Disney decides to release a new version of that particular title at a later date.
