I have the MBP mid-2009 version. I want to upgrade to a bigger hard drive and bought Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB 5400RPM from newegg back around the end of 2010. Tried to install but took over 10hrs to install the OS. So I thought maybe somethings wrong with the drive so i went to get a replacement. Got the replacement and does the same thing but somewhat faster. I did some updates and all its somewhat lags. Later on it got worse. I reinstalled it again after a few months later. still lags. I gave up and stopped using it.

Few days ago I went to take a chance of getting Seagate Momentus 750GB 7400RPM from newegg. Popped it in and tried to install but came up an error saying the installation couldnt be completed. So, i tried again and it just install very very slow. I assume it might be dead.

I had another idea. I got a external 2.5 enclosure. I popped in my original WD drive in there and boot up the OS from there. It works totally fine. no lags no issues smooth as butter. Then i realized, let me try installing the OS on the external using the Seagate. Installed very fast. Updated the OS. no problems. fast and nice. so i popped the seagate in my MBP and it just doesnt boot up at all. all i see is the apple, folder, and the circle slash sign.

Please help. sorry its long but im trying to give as much detail as i can. thanks.
Did you reformat the drive to use whatever file system Macs use? Bare drives out of the box are usually formatted for Windows.
Yep. OSX can read/write to drives formatted for Windows, but AFAIK, you can't boot from them (unless you're using Windows via Boot Camp, of course).

Try installing the Seagate, then boot up your Mac from your OSX install disk. From there, run Disk Utility to format the hard drive.
