I thought that he was supposed to make several "guest spots" this season, but I haven't seen him too much. I am a huge Stargate fan and I think that the show is doing okay, at best. After 7 seasons of Jack running around saving the world, a change needed to be made. Making him the General, probably wasn't the best idea and I thought that the show totally blew the first half of the 8th season. It got better in the last half, but that was primarily because the story line started moving again.
This season has been okay. The new guy is all right, but not great. The first part of the season with Vala was great, but then she "died". I'm sure that we'll see more of her later.
I don't know how much more staying power the show has. Since it is on cable, you don't need to have the ratings that you do on network TV. On the other hand, the show is in its 9th season, so I don't know how much more they can milk it.
My personal opinion? They should have stopped with the end of season 7, with the shot of them all fishing at Jack's place. That ending would have been just about perfect for me.

I wish it could go on, but I think it has pretty much run its course, and the people that make it apparently saw that so they started atlantis. I'm liking atlantis a lot more now than sg-1, they should probably just put sg-1 to rest and continue with atlantis, maybe tying in with earth sometimes like they do now. Sg-1's a great show and all, but I don't really see how they can take it much further.
