Maintenance man tipping obligations

So at our apartment complex we have a maintenance guy who does handy work around the buildings. He gets paid by the complex which we pay for (rent is relatively high) and I was wondering in that situation is it right to tip, or is baked goods etc good enough? What do you folks do who have a similar situation or what do you think is appropriate. Thanks!

If you're female, you're supposed to answer the door nude/in lingerie. If you're male, a cold can of beer is sufficient.

I don't believe tipping is required for a maintenance worker. Baked goods would be a real friendly gesture though.

I don't usually respond with this but...

QFT.

Tipping sucks. It's even worse when people expect it. It really depends on what the guy did though. If he came to fix your AC in the middle of a heat wave, then a cold six pack is more than apporpriate. If he came to fix something that should've been fixed before you moved in, then a firm kick in the ass is appropriate.

Before tipping, food or money, ask yourself this:

"How fast do I want my shit fixed in the future?"

From there you will get an idea of what it will take to make this guy answer to your beck and call.

12 pack of Blatz and he's yours for eternity.

Sage advice.

Considering he's your apartment complex's maintenance guy, you may want to be nice just in case you really need his help. As for what to tip, it depends on what you need him to do.

And unfortunately, this.

Thank you for all points of advice.

Yeah its a sad world where people feel obligated to tip and others expect it. Tip Should be for employees who do a above average job, to say thanks for going the extra mile.

Being we want to keep him on our good side we sided with a home made piece of blueberry pie. He was excited enough and the sink works.

That's how it should be but when you need the heater fixed in the middle of January you might wish you had been a little nicer.

Another thing that pisses me off is how people buy all sorts of presents for the garbage man, mail man, and all that. My garbage man won't even take a pizza box if it's not bagged up and I'm suppposed to give him something in the next couple months? Plus, mail men are government employees with fat benefits and a cush ass job. Our complex just has the central mailboxes so it's just a quick stop for them.

I never had any problems with getting maintenance stuff fixed when I lived in big apartment complexes. Just fill out a request in the office and it gets in the queue and fixed in a timely manner based on priority.

I could see more issues in a small, privately owned complex I guess. With the bigger ones they're totally held accountable by management who doesn't want unhappy tenants.

Moot for me now as I doubt I'll ever live in an apartment again.

I'd also never think of tipping the garbage man, especially at an apartment. It's just driving a truck to the dumpsters. They don't even have to get out.

I mostly agree with Jimmiemac...I dont think tipping money should be done since he's already paid to do what he's doing.

He's paid what he's paid to be on call 24/7 to fix that place. At the sametime, it does help to remember and as others have said, if he likes the drink, get him some beer or a nice bottle of something once or twice a year etc...just remember him is it..might show you appreciate him and he may not put you at the bottom of the list of stuff to fix regardless of how simple a job it may be.

The guy that use to deliver my mail a few yrs ago before retiring was a good guy. He wasnt lazy, never messed up any deliveries. Dude was a fan of cigars so every year I got him one of those cigars of the month which he really dug because he sampled some stuff he never tried and became a fan etc etc.

I can appreciate the fact that when youre buying/selling/trading expensive stuff, you want that kind of guy to be your delivery person. Its not that I felt obligated, it was that I appreciated it.

The two f*cktards I have delivering mail now...are as useful as a well hung man in a room full of man-hating lesbo's.
