MechWarrior reboot starting a viral twitter campaign

MAcommunity

CAGiversary!
This is a quick heads up for anyone who may have an interest in the classic iterations of the game, MechWarrior, or classic BattleTech in general. It's somewhat of a niche market, to be sure; but some of you maybe old enough to remember this one, ;).

The MechWarrior reboot that was announced jointly by Jordan Weisman (of then Smith & Tinker, Inc.) and Russ Bullock (of Piranha Game Studios) back in July of 2009 is not dead. It's very well alive, and it appears they're ready to show us a peak at what they've been working on.

In the interest of trying to grow a grass-roots viral campaign, Piranha has setup the following twitter account:
If they get a lot of followers they'll reboot the series?
They're rebooting the series regardless of the number of followers, lol. The game is already in development, I'm pretty sure of it. I could point you in the direction of the personal twitter feeds for the heads of Piranha games which pretty much confirms as much, but that would take the fun out of it.

No this appears to be an effort to spread the coming announcement of the game via word/of mouth to old uber fans. Social networking via twitter is a difficult endeavor. It takes work. Just ask Cheapy, Wombat, et al. They'll confirm as much. You or I clicking the follow button doesn't really amount to that much, but if you convince a few others to convince others to follow, then you've got a full blown viral campaign.

At this stage, this plea is for former players and hardcore fans of the old series. I think the benefit is you'll get to read news of the new game before anyone else does. If that isn't motivation to pay this forward then, you're probably not the target for this message as of yet. That will come later when they actually start marketing it.
What the fuck? I'm not going to help you advertise.
I don't know who you think I am, but it sounds like you're fucking mistaken.
They need to really improve since the last trailer for me to be interested. Hawken stole every mech game's thunder.
Yeah, Hawken looks great! I'm still waiting to hear what platforms Hawken will be supporting though. Does anyone have an update on this?

I like how posts get shaq-fu'ed but as soon as you quote it you can see the swear.... half-assed censorship!

Personally I don't know who you are, but soliciting people to help grow a twitter account does sorta gives the vibe of an advertising/promoting shill to me. Not that I mind, or really care any which-way for that matter, just throwing in my two cents.

Hawken looks kinda cool, but I'm holding my expectations: if I had a dollar for every indie developer that reveals cool first gameplay footage and then either disappears entirely or burns out and gives us a mediocre product, I'd have like 8 dollars.

I'd be happier if they brought back MechCommander. It's a toss-up between StarCraft and it as my favorite RTS. The MechWarrior games have always only been so-so to me.

Mech-anything is fine with me. I remember playing the tabletop version in like 1991 and having a blast. I enjoyed most of the games as well. It's just weird to see it without FASA being associated with it.

It's because I don't know who you are that posting these machinations is a fucking mistake.

Yeah, I was mainly objecting to his/her use of the pronoun "you." As in, "I'm not going to help 'YOU' advertise." In other, words me. As if I have an economic interest in the matter.

I've always associated the word advertise with meaning the making of something known for commercial gain. I'm not affiliated with any company. I do run a small website for fans of the MechAssault series on the original xbox. But that's about it. MechAssault =/= MechWarrior. Similar, yes. But different, you would have to already be fan to know the difference.

Yes, I'm a fan. And as a fan, I'm jazzed to know more about a new MechWarrior in development. I mainly posted the topic, to share with others who may possibly be interested in the news. It's a smaller niche to be sure.

I've taken you're constructive criticism to heart. And to avoid any further confusion, I've removed the portion of the original post with my (enthusiastic) request to follow the aforementioned twitter account.

Hope this helps.

Appeared as Shaq-fu to me when I tried to quote.

Anyway, someone explain to me the difference between Armored Core and MechWarrior? Besides the obvious, the location of each game company's origin.

I might be showing my age, but they seem the same to me. Build a robot and go out on missions. Why did it take so long for MechWarrior to come back, what last game was on the PSone from the late 90s?

Mechwarrior is based on the board game where you duke it out with little mechs (some of which are pretty obvious ripoffs of Robotech/Macross mechs). It enjoyed a fair degree of success as a tabletop game and then along came various computer game versions of it. Most were pilot-sim-ish but some, like Mech Commander went a RTS route. Overall the Armored Core games are faster, while the Mechs in Mechwarrior handle more like tanks.

There were a couple Mechwarrior games after the PSOne release (which was a port of a computer game) but apart from Mech Commander, I don't remember playing any of them.

^Thank you for the response. I figured the tabletop thing is probably why my former co-worker loved MechWarrior so much and hated Armored Core, said it was too Asian. LOL, seeing how Robotech and Macross were a part of MechWarrior.

A bit off-topic, now that I think about it I remember picking up some Robotech destroids that were re-branded for ExoSquad.

I so would buy a MechWarrior video game for the PS3/Xbox 360 that has the Robotech/Macross mechs!

Edit Note: added composite of image fragments released thus far to the original post.

(I really hope this is O.K. with the 'Herman Munster wearing Morticia's wig' guy.)

Looks almost like an Archer Heavy Mech. Not identical but if they're going to stick to designs at least inspired by the old games, I'm that much more interested.
how about Japan figure out how to utilize current gen technology and give me a good first person gundam game.

for fuck's sake
It's not first person, but Gundam Vs. Extreme is sick. And it's coming out on PS3 finally.
