I think I'm a fair portion into Metroid Prime and I'm really enjoying it. However, considering I'm a bit late into the Gamecube phenom, I've not really been up to date about whatsits and so n' sos of gamecube games. So, I'm curious what all of your opinions are on Metroid Prime and the sequel. Which of the two do you like better?

I really enjoyed the first Metroid Prime, I haven't beaten it, but I think I'm at the final boss (I should just finish it... heh) I've only played the first maybe 15 mins of Prime 2 so i'm sticking with Prime 1 as my fav.

I've played and finished both games. I would have to go with #2. Bear in mind, I am not a huge metriod freak. I just felt the story and atmosphere was so much more compelling in the second game. Plus the light world/ dark world was a cool. For some reason, I got lost much less in #2 as well.

Both great games.

I have played and beat both. I do love both of them but if I had to choose I would go with the first one. The sceond one was pretty much more of the same. I mean dont get me a wrong it was a good game and a little harder than the first. You really cant go wrong with either.
Well I actually played the first for several hours, but the second is still sealed. So I'd have to say 1 for the time being.
I am in this boat also however, I agree with the post about getting lost in the first one a lot.

I've beaten both and while I think both are excellent the second one wasn't quite as good as the first one. I've never liked games as much that use the old light/dark world idea, and as a Metroid fan the bosses and such were cooler in the first one, the bosses in the second one were still awesome (especially the third one) but just not quite as cool. Finally without giving away anything Prime 2 had a significant part in it that just annoyed the crap out of me, I'm sure it's not a big deal to most people, but I found it to be really irritating.

Metroid Prime is my favorite game of all time. Metroid Prime 2 is also fantastic but I think the first one is a little better. Not since Super Mario 64 have I been so "wowed" at a franchise making the leap from 2D to 3D. The pacing, the read if you feel like it story, the graphics, the atmosphere, the puzzles, EVERYTHING about the first game is perfect, IMO.

I liked Prime, but Echoes seemed like a hammered out sequel.

The first MP felt a lot more like the real Metroid games, and therefore, I prefer it.

Yes. MP2 kicked my ass so much. MP2 is great fun, but MP is near perfect.

I vote for the first game, by a mile. By the time Echoes came out, the sense of awe at being able to explore a genuine 3D Metroid world had worn off, and all that was left was a "me too" game with an INFURIATING Search-For-The-Billion-Scattered-Keys "story" that just screamed "rush job."

I was almost constantly frustrated during Echoes; I was almost constantly enchanted during the first Prime.

I finished the first one a while ago. It's a very good game. I haven't put enough time in Metroid 2 to be able to form a good opinion on how good it is compare to the first one.

Both games totally drew me in. During the time I was playing MP2, I would DREAM about it, it was embedded that deep in my subconscious. I think I like MP1 a little better though. MP2 is more tense and frustrating IMO. See, the thing with MP2 is that there's a ton of obscure hidden stuff to find... the type stuff that would be an optional bonus in most other games. But MP2 is set up so that all that obscure stuff is REQUIRED to beat the game. MP1 was kinda like that too, but it's worse in MP2. I spent a ridiculous amount of time wandering around in MP2 because I was dead set on not using a FAQ. Finally I caved in and got a "clue" that helped me out big time.

So just be prepared to do a LOT of backtracking and wandering unless you want to use a walkthrough... again this is there in MP1 but it's much more pronounced in 2.

I totally agree. I am currently "stuck" right now near the end (I think - I have the screw attack). I haven't received a single clue or consulted a FAQ at all because I love the exploration of Metroid games. I was able to finish MP1 - not easily - but with a little patience and thorough exploring. The "two worlds" in MP2 make navigation a little tougher, IMO and switching back and forth between the two adds a layer of complexity that my feeble brain can't comprehend.

MP was just... damn. That game totally sucked me in and I actually WANTED to get all the powerups -- to the point where I got a list of the missle upgrades and backtracked through the whole game to find the 1 I'd missed. Bosses could be challengine but weren't insane, and the backtracking never got overly tedious.

I thought that MP2 was annoying with all the light/dark switching. I never did beat it either, that last boss kicked my ass all over the place.

I thought that Prime 2's more moody, dark atsmosphere was much better but it dissappointmented when the light/dark theme world didn't really make the game that much more longer.

Prime is probably the perfect definition of refinement. The game is absolutely perfect for what it is (read: I'm not saying the game is perfect, I'm saying it's a perfect FPA/shooter). Prime 2 has some smaller flaws and the graphics just didn't impress me as much as Prime originally had mostly due to the fact that Prime 2 used the same engine and was developed in less time.

I've owned both, but never played them. What I've seen of my friends playing, Metroid Prime 2 looked more polished... but it also looked like the magic of the first was gone.

I'm waiting for someone to explicitly tell me they hate me. If you want to be first, go right ahead.

I more or less hate you. Definately my least favorite person here.

Metroid Prime 1 is definitely better. I loved MP2, but MP1 simply had more interesting environments that had more personality to them... the sequel's world simply wasn't as compelling.

i too have both, yet only opened the second one to make sure it worked and it was christmas last year. im having a hard time completing the first one. i cant wait for the second one. ill get to the third eventually, but i will have plenty of time, ill be retired.

Metroid Prime was way better than Prime2. Prime2 was just repetitive, boring, and long. The first one was just awesome, plus, theres so many sequence breaking and time runs for that game.

Isn't it Shazam, or at least another one of Alex Ross's paintings?

My avatar? No, he's not a painting.

Can't put a finger on it actually. I don't mind you so much in the vs. forum, since I expect people to be abrasive there. I feel like you had a string of posts in other threads where you would post a sort of mean-sounding non-sequiter. Not much proof, but what can I say?

with you there, meta ridley's a bitch, but once you get the hang with the FINAL boss, its easier than ridley

Voted "Neither"

I tryed the 1st... Hated the controls & FPS view... gave up after 2 1/2 hr.
I'm sure it's a great game...

Really, I wish it was a 3rd person action adventure or 2-D side scroller...

Still got Zero Mission GBA tho...

I haven't quite beat 2, but I definitely like 1 better....both were great though.
The first was a little harder, while the second just seemed...less intuitive, I guess. Like how I couldn't figure out how to beat the second boss, but never actually died fighting it - I just gave up after a half hour of neither of us doing any damage to the other. My biggest problem is the light/dark thing. I think it was cool, but it seemed like they made all of the battles easier to make up for slowing eating away at your life with the dark atmosphere. Granted, I haven't beaten it, so we'll see how the final battle/s go...maybe that will change my mind (I have this feeling that the last suit is going to totally negate the effects of dark aether). The third boss was far too easy, though. The second time I played it, I had hardly lost any life (even though there aren't any light beacons in the arena) - it's hard for me not to compare this to the omega pirate, which I had trouble beating even when I knew exactly what I had to do (I still beat it the second time, but at least it was difficult).
I'm also still a little mad about having to reset after beating the third boss because I missed one of its FIVE scans, and it wasn't even a separate form...
It won't be hard to do it again, but it will be tedious, which is why I haven't done it yet...
with you there, meta ridley's a bitch, but once you get the hang with the FINAL boss, its easier than ridley
Funny, I thought Ridley was pretty easy, whereas MP took me forever. Of course part of that is just how much trouble I had getting to MP, and that I didn't realize I had to use a certain visor to beat it...

I'm one of the few people who voted for MP2... although it is hard to pick because both are great games...

I also spent a good amount of time reading all the entries I could find in MP2 and really enjoyed the story. MP2 really had a good solid story... although, if you didn't want to read the story you didn't have to. I believe if someone skipped all the reading then they missed out on one of the "darker" Nintendo stories ever.

I also felt that MP2's regular creature fights could be tough. I remember going different routes just so I wouldn't have to fight more of those computer virus thingies.

While I might have picked MP2 over MP1... it was hard to choose.

I think I'd go with 2.

I'm a little biased though, because MP1 was the first game I played when I got my GC, and I had other games in line to play, so I kinda rushed through MP1 and got a little impatient with its pacing. I ended up playing it again on hard mode to get myself excited for MP2, and I found that I liked it better the second time because I kept finding stuff I missed the first time through.

The second one, however, I played through very slowly the first time. I spent $40 on it and I wanted to absorb every minute of it. As such, I liked it quite a bit better than the first. HOWEVER, I tried replaying it on hard mode a couple months back and got about halfway through before I decided that I just didn't feel like finishing it. Maybe next year I'll try it again when it's less fresh in my memory.

Ultimately, I'd say the one that you're most determined to enjoy and take the most time with you'll like more.
