As someone who does IT work, I cannot recommend more AGAINST using OpenOffice. The number of people I've seen who have had compatibility issues, documents lost and messed up, and just generally unable to do things makes me tell everyone I meet to stay away from OpenOffice if you're a student. The schools uses Office for a reason, as it keeps everything nice and compatible between it, and they can help you if you have a problem.

every once in a while i have an issue with someone elses .docx file opening very strangely in open office. I havent found anything required that I cant do, the method to doing it is different from office so you have to learn another way.

one reason i went with open office is because i use a windows pc and a macbook and would have to buy seperate licenses to use it on both.

Generally Office files open pretty well in OpenOffice. The problem more often than not is the other way around. I can't tell you how many files I've seen randomly corrupted or formatted strangely or other strange errors that have come from opening an OpenOffice document in Office.

In writer, i do all my work in xml format, then if im sending it out i change it to doc format.

xml is the default openoffice format, it doesnt open properly in word2007 i dont know about 2010. if you have an xml file you have to reformat it into an acceptable office format, i use .doc file format and havent had an issue.

I think the problems are because it has to be used differently.
I dont use the other programs often but i havent had any issues with excel or powerpoint with file types. i use the default file formats and theyve all transfered properly and were useable through office 2007.

I will say if you just need a producitivity suite and dont mind paying there isnt much reason to not get office.
I dislike their constant changes to proprietary file types, microsoft makes it more difficult to use anything else with every iteration.

edit - i will add that i have classmates that use older versions of office and they have a lot of issues with format compatibility with newer versions. the problems are larger related to the .docx file format. but ti doesnt matter if youre buying 2010 of coure.
