Mississippi Adoption Firm: No Catholics

E-Z-B

CAGiversary!
A local Christian adoption agency that receives funds from the sale of Mississippi's Choose Life specialty car tags will not consider Catholics as adoptive parents.

"It has been our understanding that Catholicism does not agree with our Statement of Faith," wrote Bethany Christian Services director Karen Stewart in a July 8 letter to Sandy and Robert Stedman, a Catholic couple in Jackson seeking to adopt. "Our practice to not accept applications from Catholics was an effort to be good stewards of an adoptive applicant's time, money and emotional energy."

A private adoption agency, Bethany Christian Services has locations in 75 U.S. cities, including Jackson, Hattiesburg and Columbus.
The agency is one of 24 adoption and pregnancy counseling centers in the state that receives money from the sale of Choose Life car tags, which advocate against abortion. Motorists pay an additional fee for the specialized license plate.

Of $244,000 generated by the sale of the tags in 2004, Bethany received $7,053, said Geraldine Gray, treasurer of Choose Life Mississippi, the umbrella group that distributes the money the tags raise to nonprofit groups.

So I guess Jews can pretty much forget about adopting, too. Only in the bible belt...

Ha! Although I was raised Catholic, this is rich. The conservative twits can't complain about this being a was against Christianity, since they're going after their own this time.

I don't expect this to hold, especially since they receive state funding.

I'm also curious about what substantial arguments these people have, since the most in-depth they were was a claim that Catholism is inconsistent with their "statement of faith." Odd.

Have any of you seen the "Birth - Third World" skit in Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life"?

"If the Catholic church let me put one of those rubber things on my cock during sex we wouldn't have this problem."

I'm sure the state will still take Catholic money every time they buy one of those "anti-abortion rights" license plates.

Anyone else appreciate the irony, a group that wants to take rights away from women gets their own rights trampled on.

I fail to see how this tramples the rights of Catholics. They can go to another agency can't they? And wouldn't forcing the agency to deal with catholics violate their freedom of association?

It's not just the freedom to associate with whomever you choose, it's the freedom to not associate with whomever you choose.

That particular adoption agency is almost entirely funded by the state.

Therefore, it is a public adoption agency, not a private organization.

Bethany's private, which is why it is important that the article points out that they received $7k in funding from the plates.

I'm curious, though...private adoption agencies? What the fuck?

You said "almost entirely," not "$7,000." I'm not arguing about their rights, I'm simply pointing out that you're wrong about the Bethany organization.

But I must repeat myself...privatized adoption agencies? What the friggedy fuck?
The point is if they recieve federal, state, or any other government funding they forfeit their right to discriminate.
Not to mention the fact that even if they were a private entity, the state has entrusted them with an invaluable resource (IE young human life)

We're not talking about refusing to patronize Catholics in the local deli, I would hope that there was a reason to deny this application beyond the fact that the applicants like to read thier bible in the original Latin.

Baby stores!

Buy, sell, rent!

You call it discrimination, I call it choosing association.

You saw the same thing with the Boy Scouts. They recieve support from government agencies, (Not funding usually, but use of facilities, and lectures from public officials) But they choose not to associate with gays.

You can't replace the judgement and moral values of the organization, with that of the state.

Lectures from public officials are not paid for by the government, it is volunteer work.

Boy Scouts is a private organization, and they have meetings in private churches (or buildings that other private organizations allow them to use).
They don't get even a penny from the government, 100% of their funding comes from membership dues, donations, and popcorn sales.

But this is an adoption agency funded in part by the state.

Totally different.

You have the right to associate or not associate with whomever you choose but not when you're taking government money. Then it's discrimination. You won't be surprised that I think the Boy Scouts are wrong too. I'm not saying I want them done away with. They just shouldn't be allowed to use public resources when you discriminate. Period.

Also, I can't setup a deli and put up a sign saying "No Catholics Will be Served". Why should this adoption agency (which deals with a transfer of rights issue that's infinitely more important then selling a ham sandwich) be able to discriminate like this?

The ham sandwich does help keep away the Muslims & Jews.

Using money from a government program to discriminate is the issue.

And, with the boy scouts, their gay policies become an issue when they start using public building to recruit and for other reasons (cub scouts in my area are always using local public schools).

I think the real issue is that these homeless children are being sent to homes that support discrimination and intolerance.

They're recruiting! It's like the homosexuals, except it's the christians! Christians are recruiting! Oh the horror, oh the humanity!
