I added American's to the title because it obviously doesn't cover combatant/civilian deaths...

Nearly 125 Shot Dead In Chicago Over Summer
Total Is About Double The Death Toll In Iraq
CHICAGO (CBS) ― An estimated 123 people were shot and killed over the summer. That's nearly double the number of soldiers killed in Iraq over the same time period.

In May, cbs2chicago.com began tracking city shootings and posting them on Google maps. Information compiled from our reporters, wire service reports and the Chicago Police Major Incidents log indicated that 123 people were shot and killed throughout the city between the start of Memorial Day weekend on May 26, and the end of Labor Day on Sept. 1.

According to the Defense Department, 65 soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. About the same number were killed in Afghanistan over that same period.

In the same time period, an estimated 245 people were shot and wounded in the city.

Police department spokeswoman Monique Bond disputed the numbers, saying in an e-mail that sometimes shootings are re-classified as accidental. She said the CBS 2 analysis did not match official department statistics, but she did not provide details. CBS 2 has asked for that information.

"The department officially releases crime statistics on a monthly basis to ensure the proper investigations are thoroughly conducted to determine manner and motive which also may result in reclassifications, '' Bond said.

Violent crime reports available on the department's website do not break down shootings by month. However, the latest report shows that the murder in the city is up 18 percent from last year. From January-July, the department reports 291 people were murdered, compared with 246 for the same period in 2007.

The South Side's Englewood District, which includes the Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods on the city's South Side, fared the worst over the summer. A total of 14 people were shot dead there, and 48 were shot and wounded.

The next highest totals came in the Grand Crossing District, which includes the South Shore, Woodlawn, Park Manor and Grand Crossing neighborhoods on the South Side, 12 people were killed and 31 were injured.

Also hit severely by gun violence over the summer was the Ogden District – which includes the Near Southwest Side's Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods – where 10 people were killed and six were injured.

The South Chicago District on the Southeast Side saw nine people killed and 11 injured, almost all concentrated in the South Chicago and Avalon Park neighborhoods at the north end of the district.

The West Side's Austin District saw also saw nine people killed and 12 injured, while the Far South Side's Calumet District – including the Roseland, Fernwood and Pullman neighborhoods – saw eight killed and 20 injured.

Thoughts?

cool last year Philly had a average of 3 deaths a day total number was over 400 by the end of the year though looks like the windy city is catching up
I just want to point out that being killed and being shot and wounded aren't the same things.
In other news, the sun rose today and is expected to set.

I would be most interested in comparing the death totals of Chicago and the Iraq war starting when the Iraq war began.

If you counted total deaths in Iraq you'd have a point, but you're comparing every murder in Chicago to the deaths of only US troops in Iraq. There are what - about 150,000 US troops in Iraq? Compared to 2.8 million people in Chicago?

That gives you around a 1 in 2,300 chance of dying in Iraq and a 1 in 22,400 chance of dying in Chicago. Or if you want to do it in the "per 100,000" then 43.3 per 100,000 American troops die in Iraq and 4.4 per 100,000 people in Chicago are murdered.

That sounds accurate. The reference is irrelevant, but I was just interested in seeing the numbers.

I suppose a better comparison would be comparing the Iraq war with a similar scale operation. :whistle2:k

thats basically why i posted it. im certainly not trying to say that chicago is more violent than iraq. its just shocking numbers.

Well you'd be surprised at how many people can't differentiate between those terms. They seem to get grouped into the same category constantly.

If you compared the same things it would be, how about the total number of wounded in Iraq vs Chicago during the same period? Those are at least the same things. Comparing the wounded in one area to the dead in another makes no sense.

alright, ya lost me. we arent comparing wounded with killed. 65 killed in iraq. 123 killed in chicago. im assuming you didnt read the story.

I was referring to the 65/245 part of the article.

"According to the Defense Department, 65 soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. About the same number were killed in Afghanistan over that same period.

In the same time period, an estimated 245 people were shot and wounded in the city."

I know, I read the thing. But that's not what we're talking about.
Waits for this information to be used aganist Obama
haha

Maybe suggest a surge of police force in chicago... maybe for 18 months.

wow, those in philly... insane number.

I think even in my state... it's like >20... but we had a few that were rediculous....

A cop goes off and murders 3 plus himself...

The difference being that the 4,100+ deaths in Iraq are the direct result of a political decision.

Hell, how many people die every day in the world vs. Americans in Iraq? Why, their deaths are positively insignificant!
Great, deaths in Iraq are down.

Time to close up shop and come on home while the rest still live.
Like the awesome sign at the RNC said, "You can't win an occupation"

Sorry for the confusion, that's what i was referring to.
