they are going to need some luck to find fools willing to part with movies i think

How do you determine your trade-in prices?
Trade-in credit is based on product availability within our store. A title that our store needs will qualify for a higher trade credit. DVDs earn an average credit of $3 and VHS titles earn an average of 50 cents

woo 50 cents per VHS movie. then they would just turn around and sell them for 5-10 bucks Wooo 1000% markup

considering I can't GIVE most of my VHS tapes I have away, I'm shocked they'll take them at all. Hell, most people I know don't even have working VCR's anymore.

seems reasonable worthless until they start some better trade in promotion. I'm sure they will end up doing some sort of trade in deal at some point in order to compete.

I still have a VCR since the VHS version of Star Wars is still the best. Also have some movies that are kind of rare that are only VHS and a lot of movies that aren't on DVD yet.

But still, that's a very lame trade in policy. Definitely not worth it and they make it obvious, unless they do some promotion or deal with it. Gamestop or EB would just be the way to go.

Actually either the 1993 Definative Collectors Edition or the 1995 THX "Faces" edition on Laserdisc are the best official releases of the pre-SE versions.

Unofficially however the best versions I know of are the Dr. Gonzo DVD-R bootlegs.

I know this is off topic but still... I cringe whenever someone says that the VHS editions of "Star Wars" is "still the best."

The Dr. Gonzo discs are indeed great, and the best copies if you want the original versions.

remember it says avg is 50 cents. I stop past a hollywood video last night to return a few movies and asked them for some prices on VHS and DVD.

Every part of Nightmare on elm DVD 2-4 each VHS 25 cents to 50 cents
Every part of Friday 13th DVD 1-3 each VHS 10 Cents each

they said its mostly the movies that came out within the last year that will fetch 50 cents to buck on VHS anything that came out more then 4 years ago will fetch around 10 cents on vhs. They were shocked they were even taking in VHS saying they have no idea where they would put them .. T hey are now dumping 4 almost new release VHS for 20 and they cant belive that they would take VHS in since they are trying to clean out their own stock

Woah Woah Woah don't jump the gun on that one, VCR's sure as hell arn't dead yet. I still own and buy more vhs than dvd. If I can get it preowned for 3 bucks on VHS, there is no way im going to fork out 15 or 20 for a dvd.

I hear where you're coming from. While I usually will always buy a DVD over a VHS, there are times I'll pick up the VHS if no one has the DVD in stock. I did that when I wanted to watch Spiderman after Spiderman 2 came out. I went to all the rental places, and they were all out, and I couldn't find one to buy on DVD.

So I went to Wal-Mart and bought it for $5. Can't beat that.

I still buy VHS when it comes to videos for the kids. I'm pretty sure Hollywood will sweeten the deal eventually they are a lot easier to work with than Blockbuster in most occassions

I have never really seen the point of trading in things like music CDs and DVDs (and VCR tapes). I mean sure you could easily make copies of these things, but when you go to trade them in you will get almost nothing. In a lot of cases I would rather have all the crap sitting around my house than to practically give it to some store.

You might want to get friendly with your local Hollywood staff. I've gotten to know several guys at the one I go to and apparently this weekend they will be giving out "Friends and Family" coupons where you'll get a minimum of $5 per dvd. Looking like a good time to dump some crap.
doesn't BlockBuster still do a minimum of $5 per DVD, I would just go there.
I don't believe so. I went to trade a few DVDs in two weeks ago, and I remember getting less than that for a few, i.e. Sleepers was worth $3. Could be YMMV?

Yaeh I know that the laserdisc version are the better "official versions" but I don't have a laser disc player and most people I know don't have one so I just stuck with the one that is most popular/in most people's homes.

Now what are these Dr. Gonzo editions that you speak of? Where might I be able to find them.

Laserdisc to DVD copies made by a Star Wars fan who goes by the nickname Dr. Gonzo. These copies were downloadable via torrents and such, but I don't know how they are available anymore.

Anyway, they are probably the best copies available:

THX intros
2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround
Audio Commentary

I just got back from Hollywood, the "friends and Family" sale goes from the 12th until the 15th. You dont need a coupon, everything is just set at those prices right now. 1$ for VHS and 5$ for dvds. You wont be able to trade in cheap dollar movies from somewhere either, it is basically everything they have in system only. Supposedly 20,000 titles. I traded in a few sample tapes today for 1$ and we then marked them up at $7.99. Im sure they would have gotten even less if not for the promotion.

Another crappy thing is that you can't used the credit at GameCrazy. It is for Hollywood only. You can buy gift cards with it, but I have no idea if you can use those at GC.

no you cant, well at least not yet. are networks were joined recently but no software update. in due time we will be able to transfer credit between the 2 stores. oh and ignore my thread about this deal since i didnt realize that somebody else posted the deal.
