Good move.

At the same time though, it almost makes me feel like they found something that was definitely wrong with those initial units and that I should just be waiting for mine to go belly up now.

Wow, that is excellent...does this mean EVERYONE with a pre2006 360 can get it "fixed" again even if you have no problems?

I got mine at launch, but sent it back twice for new consoles....I'll have to check the man. date on it.

Nice move MS.

So how do we get our refund? I'm guessing you just call in?

Hmmm after readin the thread this still isn't official...

I was going over the xbox forums (link on OP) and they are supposedly going to mail them out automatically.

I'll say that is one awesome move. I have the warranty so it doesn't add anything to my benefit but it sure does make some "fine for good" sense.

This is something I can only see console manufacturers that are far into the black capable of doing. Meaning Microsoft and Nintendo are able to do this. Sony will never do this because they are so far in the red they need every penny they can get. Sony will pay up when a class action lawsuit takes place. Kind of like the DRE class action lawsuit. Microsoft is handling it way better than when Sony handled my PS2 DRE problems.

Very nice MS :)

I'll have to tell one of my friends about this. He bought one at launch and hasn't had any problems with it until just recently.

I think i'm gonna wait for some sort of official announcement before getting in on this. I just had my xbox repaired $32.24 + $30 for a 1 year extended warranty. Somehow I find it hard to believe MS would just mail out checks automatically.

Interesting. Doesn't affect me any because I purchased the 2 year warranty but this is good news for people that had to shell out $170 or whatever it was to get their consoles repaired/replaced after the 90 warranty. It does make me wonder if my last console (my third) was just a ticking timebomb. It had a Mfg. date of 12-21-2005 and out of the blue it croaked on me last week.

You're actually totally wrong, because Sony is making money on PS2's now, while MS is losing $$ on every 360 and original Xbox.

It's definitely a good PR move... but honestly, we shouldn't have had this issue in the first place. As much as it makes it look as though MS really cares about the customer, you have to keep in mind that they shipped a lot of fucked up hardware to retail... more than should be considered acceptable even with the refunds they're sending out.

Hah!!! I never said just the videogame division. If you knew Microsoft the corporation is a far in the black company, same with Nintendo. Sony on the other hand is in the red and the only thing that has kept it afloat is the Sony gaming division. Sony is banking everything on Blu-ray and PS3.

At least they're doing something about it.

If they didn't care about their customers, than why would they do this? It's not as if they lost a class action lawsuit like Sony did.
how long until they stop offering em for free, because my 360 is pre 2006, so if it dies in say 5 months, i wonder if i get a repair for free
From what I read, they are extending your warranty a year. And you have to have your original sales receipt.

Reportedly, the extra year is on top of any other warranties you have. So if you paid for the 2 years, you now have 3 years.

Now that there kicks ass if true. :D

I finally received my 2-year warranty papers this week. I purchased the warranty in February, but for whatever reason the papers say it started May 2006 and expires in May 2008.

Did they extend everyone's original warranties?

I'm thinking the same thing. It sucks thinking that any day now it's going to die but I've been living with that feeling for 9 months now...

I love how people are all over this when I haven't even heard anyone post here confirming it's true. NO official announcment, nothing. I guess people just like to jump to conclusions =p

I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to believe this... if it's true or not

Including yourself...pick up the phone and call if you need an "official" announcement

for people to lazy to click the link

"Here's Microsoft's statement:

As part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently noticed a higher than usual number of units coming in for repair. Upon further investigation, it was further discovered that the bulk of the units were isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console. Returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons and it's a higher rate than we are satisfied with. We've made the decision to comp repairs for consoles manufactured before January 1, 2006, and provide refunds to the small group of customers who have already paid for repairs. "
Well, I have my doubts about the validity of this since it was first "reported" by a user on the Xbox.com forums.

You can doubt it all you want but it is legit.

I just called, I'm getting my refund. Guy hesitated a bit when I told him I didn't have my receipt but a quick "one moment while I contact my supervisor" took care of it.

He was a little surprised I knew of this he asked "So this is posted on the website now?" I said, not officially which is why I was calling to ask.

I was rather ticked at having to pay $130 to get mine fixed in June. This is a good move by MS in terms of keeping consumers happy.

Well this is awesome news. I bought my 360 a month after launch and have had 0 problems with it, so almost 10 months and counting, HOWEVER the console can go belly up and I'll be refunded the amount? That's sweet. I've ordered the two year warranty as well before :D Sweet! MS rules on this move.

At least they're starting to ackknowledge their problem and take responsibilty for their mistake. It just sucks because less than 2 weeks ago I opened my defective pre-2006 console to avoid the $140 fee. If I would've waited I would've been in the clear, instead I got a new console which already failed after mere minutes. Oh well, I have horrible luck like this. This announcement has lessened my resentment for M$.

This is good news! I just emailed a friend who has a dead launch 360 and no warranty. He kept putting off calling and acting like he just bought the system and then buying the warranty and getting it repaired then since he didn't have the extra cash.

Hopefully the part someone mentioned about one year being added to the 2 year warranty people already have purchased is true as well. I've already used it once when my system died and i'm still scared of dieing since the system seems fragile.

...I dont even know the manufacture date on my 360, because I just sent it in. I got it mid-January, so I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope mine was made durring 2005.
How long does the pre-2006 repair cover? A year? 2 years?
90 days. I'm a bit confused. Some sites report that it covers consoles with a build date prior to January 1, but other state it covers those who bought consoles before the 1st of the year. Which one is it?

A nice move, but damn if this doesn't make me paranoid about mine breaking.

This problem should not exist in the first place, but it's nice to see them doing something about it.

Man I'm on the phone right now trying to get mine fixed and I'm having a problem. I tried explaining to him that it scratches discs and he says that it's impossible w/o moving the system. This is retarded, because my Madden has big rings in it and I'm not a fucking idiot that moves the system.

I just wish they would recall everyone of the defective batch and be done with it. I have a launch system and it is running just fine. Was it the first few thousands made or was it isolated to a certain factory?

Goddamn it. Apparently Microsoft will call me because the guy on the phone said he can't confirm that my system was built in 2005, even though it says it on the back of the fucking system. Wonder how long it will take for them to call me? I'm guessing weeks (if ever).

edit: Wow I was way wrong, they called me within the hour and are fixing it completely for free. I forgot that Microsoft has (generally) good customer service.

ok here's the deal

basically they are extending all warranties from before 2006 to one year.
Hence by being under warranty your repairs are free till the 2006 date of when you purchased your console.
