Multiplayer XP and Leveling Up

I noticed in Rainbow Six Vegas that players gain experience points while playing online multiplayer. As the player gains experience, they level up, allowing the player to unlock new abilities and weapons. Not that I have any problems with Rainbow Six Vegas in particular; I just find this trend to be disturbing because the last thing an experienced player needs is another advantage over less experienced noobs.

Experience players already know the levels, know strategies that work and have a keen grasp on the controls and weapons. These things make it difficult for a new player to jump into an online multiplayer game as it is. Now on top of these natural advantages, experience players will also get access to better weapons and new abilities.

Now more than ever, it feels even more important to get in on the ground level because catching up with the crowd later on may just be too overwhelming. That means buying the game on or around release, not something all CAGs like to do. If new players avoid multiplayer because they cannot get up to speed fast enough, I think it can hurt a games following in the long run.

Am I full of shit or does anyone else see future issues with these types of experience/leveling systems?

Not really as long as they allow matches where everyone only has access to basic abilities/weapons. Don't know how they handle it so maybe someone with more experience can chime in on this.

You can level up in non-ranked matches. So just play with your friends. Or host matches and disable certain items.

I'm a specialist and I can manage to take down higher ranks just relying on the guns given. Most players I've seen don't go for ultra high weapons, except the P90.

I can't quite find the article but Ubisoft learned from Lockdown. They stated that this time around when you get new upgrades they will not unbalance the multiplayer aspect. You basically get cooler looking weapons/armor but gameplay will be balanced whether you unlocked everything or are new to the playfield.

Also we have a R6: Vegas thread. Sorry if I seem anal but we have specified threads for a reason:

I didn't intend this to be specific to Rainbow Six Vegas, but I can see why it went that way. This same type of feature can be seen in other games like Battlefield 2142. It was intended to be a general discussion on the ability to level up a character in a competitive multiplayer game (not MMORPGs), gaining access to better weapons and abilities and how it affects new players down the road.

Sorry if I broke forum etiquette, I registered with CAG awhile ago but I rarely post.

the easiest way to get points in vegas is coop. Other than that Team Sharpshooter, which you arent on your own so as long as you stick with a group and communicate with your team you should be good.

It works this way in mmorpgs too. Unless you are the first batch of people to get into the game, it's very hard to stay competitive in pvp.
Unlike mmoprgs, RS:V makes it so that you dont need all the high level unlockable gear to still be good at the game. Lots of guys dont wear armor at all. Just because a high level weapon/armor is available, doesn't mean its better.
