My N64 is more fun than my PS1

When I find myself in the mood for classic "old school 3D", I find myself reaching for the N64 games:
- Mario 64
- Mario Party
- Paper Mario
- Tetrisphere
- Resident Evil 2 (best version in 640x480 hi-res)
- Zelda - Ocarina of Time
- Star Wars Racer
- Fzero 64
- Smash Brothers
- Starfox 64
- Banjo 1 or 2

In contrast, I rarely play PS1 games. Sometimes I'll take a stab at Xenogears, but I quickly grow bored, and reach for an N64 cart.

Although the PS1 was the best-seller w/ better artistic backgrounds, it hasn't aged well. It's the classic N64 games that keep drawing me back, like an addict.

lol @ RE2 being a "classic N64 game"..

Where's the Harvest Moon? Come on, you list Banjo, F-Zero, RE2, Tetrisphere.. no Harvest Moon!? BOOOOOOO!

But seriously, show the PS1 some lovin' as well, especially with Parasite Eve, the Resident Evil series, all the other RPG's.. but eh, i'm in the same boat with you. Got rid of the PS1/PS2 a long time ago and haven't looked back.. my N64 shares space on the rack next to my XBox and still gets a ton of playtime.. between Conker, Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario, No Mercy, Zelda: OoT and others, there's no reason for me to get a PS1 again.. except Parasite Eve. Man, I love that game.
N64 is the third best Nintendo system but I'd rank them like this...

GCN
SNES
PS2
DC
GB/GBA
N64
PS1
NES
etc.
am i missing something, or is the N64 4th on your list

N64 is one of my favorite systems. Games like No Mercy, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Mario Party, and Paper Mario are still better than many games in their respective genres.

Oh, and Munch, I think he meant Nintendo consoles, not including handhelds. In other words, the N64 beats the NES in his opinion.
Yeah and the controller no one has topped that one. Greatest controller ever.
People say that, and it always confuses me. How is this a good controller? The whole trident design is completely flawed (in hindsight of course), and the C-buttons sucked.
People say that, and it always confuses me. How is this a good controller? The whole trident design is completely flawed (in hindsight of course), and the C-buttons sucked.
Well, I think the trident kinda makes more sense then currently having to strain your hand to use the dpad on any controller, or the analog stick on the playstation controller. Instead, just move your hand to a different section. I know people will contradict me with "Well, its not strain for me" But, hold a controller and see where your hands naturally fall, and its not on the secondary controls, unless its a n64 controller and you change spots on the trident.

No controller is perfect. Cube's analog stick is best with the octagon thing. With my big old hands I kind of favor the original xbox controllers size. n64 is one of my favorite controllers. Had no problems with fighting games like killer instinct, shooters like goldeneye, platformers like mario 64, racing games like wave race, space shooters like star fox 64 etc... Shape was ugly but all current gen controllers have some problems with one game genre or another. N64 was better current gen at least overall. Any other opinions from people with experience.

yeah, if you count GBA as a system...
lol @ RE2 being a "classic N64 game"..
Go back and re-read my edited post.

The N64 controller is okay, but the left prong is completely worthless. Might as well not exist, and just have two prongs. I liked the trigger control. (Also N64's analog was >>>>> better than the PS1's original non-analog controller.)

Best to worst? I like classic arcade games, so I'd pick:
- Atari 2600 as the best w/ great games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, Pitfall 2, Jr.Pac-Man, and a huge ~1000 game library (runner-up - the 7800)
- Super Nintendo is second with great 16-bit graphics.
- N64 third with 3D classics.
- PS2 fourth, with the best variety. (The rest like Cube or Genesis or NES, I can live without.)

Also worth mentioning is the Commodore=64 which is not a console, but it feels like one, because it has the same "plug'n'play" cartridge mentality...... and a huge 5000+ game library. The C=64 was a computer, but 99% of its primary purpose was for gaming.

i just picked up an n64 again. i can't put down playing 1080. i want to pick up some other games but just havent got the chance to do so. the only thing about the n64 that i don't like is the controller. i wish the thought about the design better.
the only thing about the n64 that i don't like is the controller. i wish the thought about the design better.
They did. They included an analog stick. Also a slot for a rumble pack.

The original PS1 controller had neither!

troy

You must not like rpgs. PS1 has so many great ones, and I play them way more than anything on N64. The games I do still play are Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, and Rogue Squadron.
You must not like rpgs.
Well, most of them *do* have rather lame stories. Very few are worth replaying, because the story is so lousy.

troy

While I love my N64, I have about 20 games for it versus 100+ for the PS1. The PS1 was such a great system I have discovered in retrospect as far as sheer number of great titles released. Dozens of quality RPGs, great shooters, good crazy ass Japanese games, etc.

If you get bored with Xenogears you must not like RPG's. That's one of my favorites. Despite it's extreme oddness, especially near the end.

On another note. N64 sold really well. Only thing Sony had on it was RPG's. If Nintendo got back to basics with some of their games like they might be doing, they can dominate again. In the end games matter not the system's power. If anything PS2 proved that, gameboy proved that, and even partially the ps1 proved that. Because other then cd, n64 was better in hardware. Rare made a lot of Nintendo games. Do they own Killer Instinct or does Nintendo at the moment. Odd that no sequel from rare on an x-box or from Nintendo has been heard from. But anyway if the next system releases games as good as the n64's combined with free online and good rpg's they can win the next gen fight.
You get bored with Xenogears. I feel bad for you.
No, I got bored the *second* time around. First time was fun, but the story's not interesting enough to play over-and-over.

I agree. I loved it the first time through. I wanted to play it again a few years later, but it bored the hell out of me.

PS1 had the best lineup of RPGs with Saturn (JPN) and SNES competing for second place.

N64 had great games, but they were sparse, and PS1 had something for everyone.

Nothing can compare to some of the PS1 games in terms of quality, Ray Man and the Crash series alone destroyed the adventure/platforming games on 64.

I liked some games on N64 (Mario Tennis, Zelda, Mischief Makers, Mario 64 to name a few).

I admire the fact that Nintendo crafted a system that appealed to Johnny Football and new mothers alike, but the Gamecube far surpasses N64 and it at least has a handful of RPGs.

Super NES and Gamecube are far better consoles than N64. Whether or not they are as effective a party favor, I am not sure.

Matter of opinion. I myself never liked Ray Man or Crash. But that's me. Other then the RPG's and about 6-8 other random games I had mostly n64 games.
Never played Rayman (isn't that on N64?). Crash Bandicoot Warped did nothing for me, even though most people say it's the best game. Spyro 1 & 2 were fun, but nowhere near the masterpieces that were Mario64 and Banjo-Kazooie.

As for the Gamecube... well, I don't like it. You can see why in a separate thread.

The N64 was (and still is) an excellent system, it was a much better system then the PS. The PS had more good games, but the N64 had more great games. The controller was great at the time (far better than the original PS controller and later the DC controller), but I think it has been far surpassed by the dual analog setups of current controllers.

Rayman 2 was on N64, but the first one was 2D and only on PS (or PC). I prefered Crash to Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie always annoyed me with it's excessive collecting. I think it's best games were shooters, not platformers. Though I think the N64 is much better than the GC.

Yuck, I only had fun with a few games on the N64. It collected dust along with the Saturn next to my PSX. It had its share of great games but I needed more then 2 good games a year. I wanted to love the N64 and I still catch myself calling it the Ultra64 because I had more fun reading the hype then actually playing the N64 after it came out. I am having more fun with the GCN then the N64 and that is not saying much.

This is not flame bait the god honest truth.

Like I said matter of opinion. And some games you never knew about could have been really good, it's just you never picked them up or noticed them. I play games on the snes emulater. And I of course own the roms, of course. And the ps1 that I never knew about before. Same with my recently cheapy bought saturn, actually a very good system with some good games. But like I said I thought crash, and raymen were lame. But that's me. I enjoyed Jak and Daxter though. And I know thats ps2.
As for the Gamecube... well, I don't like it.
How can you like the N64 and not like the GCN? The GCN practically has upgrades of all the great N64 games.
Rayman 2 was on N64, but the first one was 2D and only on PS (or PC).
Well, Jaguar first, then PS1 Saturn and PC later.

/just sayin'

Well not all. Killer Instinct, and Goldeneye two of my favorites are without update. And there still hasn't been a good update. They even admited it when they released Rogue Agent. And since MGM has been bought by sony. We are unlikely to see a sequel on XBox or otherwise. Main thing I want is a Killer Instince update. That was my favorite fighting game.

yeah, not all games got great updates but enough of them... plus a bunch of new games that are great that hadn't appeared yet ... Super Monkey Ball, Pikmin, etc...

Ya overall I have more xbox games. Love my cube games more though. Overall it's GBA CUBE XBOX and then PS2. As soon as Mario Kart DS comes out though that alone is enough to shoot DS to #1 for me. Wonder if a goldeneye port with online wifi is possible. Other then that Star Fox DS, and a fighting game would be near. Killer Instinct port or an original title would be fun.

Only fighting game i ever played a lot of. With the exception of sf 2, and mk 1 and 2. Since then i've never really gotten into them.

I agree that the n64 is a good system, but if you want a taste of all that's good you should get every system possible :)

My favorite PS1 games
- Suikoden 1
- Suikoden 2
- Castlevania SOTN
- FF7
- FFTactics
- Lunar Silver Story Complete
- Silent Hill (Which I enjoyed over RE more, till RE4 came out that is)
- Street Fighter Alpha 3
- Tekken 3

PS1 has alot to thank due to it's RPGS, if you don't like RPGS theres less to love in the system but It's still one of my favorite systems out there. I just wish I could say the same for the PS2 rpgs.

N64 also has Harvest Moon which I throughly enjoyed, and let's not forget about No Mercy which was probably my favorite wrestling game of all time.

Agreed. Accept Silver Star Story. That was on sega cd first. With it's still too high price tag and the fact i've already played it. Not enough reason to buy again.
