The controllers use regular batteries and are not rechargeable. I know a lot of people like that option since they can buy rechargable AA's to use, but it does get old really quickly. Probably saved your dad some stress.

These are on Amazon refurbished for about $40. I got one a few days ago and it looks brand new.

I prefer not having built in rechargeable batteries as one day the batteries are going to die and you're going to need to open it up to swap them out. I wish the Sony controllers took replaceable batteries.

Using rechargeable AAs is far superior to built in. The fact that this uses replaceable batteries has me more interested in it now.

Back in stock might just order it, boomer dads are hard to shop for and he was a gamer back in the day and liked the ps classic I got for him last year.
