So I wanted to get myself some N64 controllers but pretty much every used listing I see has the same issues: loose joystick or have no idea what that even means.

Is it worth it to to try any alternatives out there? Or even try to replace the joystick with a third party joystick or a third party GC style joystick?

Super Pad Plus is a decent 3rd party controller so is the Hori. Some people have replaced the sticks with GC Joysticks and the works pretty good

I was thinking of doing the GC stick replacement but GC controllers aren't cheap, especially due to their use with Smash Bros.

The 3rd party GC style joystick replacements are really nice imo. They're definitely different than the original, but they're not bad, and definitely more durable.

Even as a kid, I never liked the N64 analog sticks, and how easily they could break. I don't know if most games only recognize a Memory Pack attached to Player 1's controller.
