I'm hoping someone can help acquaint me with the name of this childhood Genesis game. Unfortunately I don't remember much. A friend owned it, and I don't remember the title.

It was a 2d flying shooter (like Gradius, or Darius Twin). I don't remember if it was left-to-right, bottom-to-top, or both.

There were several opportunities to upgrade ships' weapons/shields/etc. I think this was done by flying into specific shops during the course of the level, but I don't remember for sure. I suppose it could have happened between levels.

Any ideas? I'd be grateful to even see similar games of this genre. I poured over lists at gamerankings.com and wikipedia but nothing seemed familiar.

Thanks!

EDIT: Solved! I was thinking of Forgotten Worlds. Thanks for your help!

Judging from that info, I would say the game is Fantasy Zone.

Wow, that definitely fits the description, but somehow, videos of it don't feel right. I remember the weapon-selection screen being darker than this for some reason, and I remember specifically playing it on a USA Genesis, not SMS.

Are there any other games that might fit the description?

Thanks for the tip though, I'm going to have to check this quirky game out.

That is obviously Gadget Twins
Judging from that info, I would say the game is Fantasy Zone.
Close but no cigar. Fantasy Zone was an arcade port for the Master System. Mega Drive only saw one FZ title and that was Super Fantasy Zone, which was released in 1993 for Europe and Japan. The American Genesis system never saw a release for Super Fantasy Zone.

HOWEVER, the description does seem to indicate that this is a Fantasy Zone title as the game did have shops within the stages to upgrade your Opa-Opa. Upon looking at Gadget Twins, I'd say it doesn't fit the category quite so well. The game in question is indeed of the Fantasy Zone series. The bigger question is that is the OP certain this is for the Genesis and not the Master System?

I love the graphics of that game. Wish I were better at the controls.

Thanks! It turns out I was thinking of Forgotten Worlds. I'm not sure how I missed the fact that my "ship" is more like a buff human being. Wish I could explain how my memory worked.

Anyway, thanks for the help! I learned about two new games, and looking at Gadget Twins got me to accidentally look closer at the F games.

I can't think of a better game title to forget.

Thanks again!
