Need a good HDTV for gaming

CAGiversary!
Preferably not much higher than $500 or so. There should be tons of awesome (online, not camping out) Black Friday deals, right?!

Help me! I'm not even sure what I should be looking for, nor where to look.

Well, I can tell you the basics of what you're looking for at least (sorry, just got done with my shift at Walmart and am too exhausted to research all these sites for models and links). If you're looking at anything bigger than a 32" than you'll want a 1080p resolution--most TVs 32" and smaller are generally 720p and honestly, at that small of a screen, it becomes nearly unnoticeable in difference. Same with LCD/LED refresh rates, more or less, if it's 32" or smaller, 60hz is decent enough but anything bigger and you'll definitely want a set with 120hz if not 240hz. I just bought my in-laws a 46" from WM last month that was 1080p with only a 60hz refresh rate and it wasn't noticeable MOST of the time but there was definitely some lag from time to time, depending on what's on the screen and what kind of source you're playing (cable boxes only go up to 1080i, game consoles and blu-ray players are 1080p). The only other basic that comes to mind is you really should look at the inputs/outputs specs and try to get a tv with a TOSlink/Optical output jack--some of the lower tier TVs (like the one I got the in-laws) only have an RCA "Digital"/Coaxial (usually orange or black in color, versus the Red Yellow White composite jack's colors) which is fine enough but having that Optical output is easier for hooking up many sound systems and headphone sets like Turtle Beach's.

From what I've seen of pricing trends lately, aside from limited time "doorbusters" prices, you can snag a low-tier 46" 1080p--but only 60hz--LCD for around $500 and if you're not the kind to notice too many details when watching shows and playing games, than that may suit you just fine. Decent "fully HD" 120hz TVs with the same 1080p resolution and in the same size range I've seen go for at least $700-$1k though.

[Note: sorry for rambling, did I mention it's late? And, please note that I have no experience/trust in Plasmas but I hear they've come a long way since their introduction but they generally are heavier, run hotter, but this is balanced out slightly over their LCD/LED rivals by having super-smooth refresh rates. So take that for what it's worth.]

Hopefully this gets you looking in the right directions. Always look around at product reviews to see what the majority of owners have to think. I generally search for the TV's model number and the obvious word "review", and if I can't find enough mainstream review sites (Consumer Reports, CNET, etc) then I check Amazon.com & Best Buy to see what the "laymen" have to say about each model I'm interested in.
