I'd hate to put this in the trading forum since it would most likely end up on the next page before getting any replies. Here's my problem:

A few weeks ago, I set up a trade with another user where he would be shipping first. He said he was busy, so he wouldn't be able to ship right away. Well, several days later on a Friday, I found what he was supposed to send me for a good price, so I PM'ed him that evening telling him I wanted to back out of the trade. I got a reply from him Saturday saying he had already shipped that morning, so I agreed to complete the trade with him anyway, but when I got his package today, I see that it wasn't shipped until Monday afternoon. Because he lied to me like that, am I required to complete the trade? Part of what he sent me was cash, so am I justified in deducting my shipping costs and sending his stuff back?

Sounds fair if you use his own money...
However, he did lie. You told him you didn't want it, but he send it anyways... So I'd say you could even keep it. Maybe that will teach him to be honest.

Tough one.
I would say yes if he did it in bad faith. But for the sake of keeping a good rep, send him back his trade for lying and eat the media mail cost. That seems to be fair for all. IMHO

Maybe he did ship on saturday. If you send on the weekend, the package shouldnt go anywhere till monday. I could be wrong though, ask for his receipt of when he paid

The post mark would ahve still been on Saturday though. My mail gets picked up from my post office at about 3:30, but If I mail it after that, it still shows the post mark of the day I mailed it.

Yeah, the postmark has Monday's date, and the record from the delivery confirmation number shows that the package was accepted by the post office at about 3p.m. on Monday.

He may have dropped it in a collection box on Saturday that gets collected Noon-3PM Monday through Friday. So then it wouldn't be accepted at the post office until it's picked up. If he mailed it at a post office then bignick is correct, it will have a postmark from the day it was handed over to the clerk.

My possible theory is a stretch and you could eliminate that possibility if it has retail delivery confirmation (the green sticker), you only get that at the post office. Or maybe even based on what the postage looks like on the package. If you really knew the USPS you might be able to tell if it's something that would only have been printed at the PO. Take a pic of the postage and maybe someone on here can tell you?

I agree that more than likely he dicked you over, although IMO once a deal has been finalized neither party should be able to reneg on it without the other's okay. But he shouldn't have lied about having sent it regardless.

This package had a postage label printed from the post office and the green sticker for DC. It also had "Media Mail" stamped on it, which can only mean that it wasn't a drop-off.

I had a trader once who asked me to put a game on hold for him then backed out almost a week later. In the meantime, I had two other offers for the game, but without knowing that, the guy sent me an extra $2 when he bought a couple other games from me. I thought that was more than fair, and I would have offered this guy the same, but he deliberately tried to deceive me. I'm also considering making him pay for a money order so he doesn't try to say that I never sent him any money. Any more thoughts before I reply to this guy?

I think that, since the deal was agreed upon, you shouldn't be able to "back out." However, lying was also uncalled for. All I can know is:

"Good luck."
