I think I'm finally going to give in and buy subs for my car but I know nothing about car audio.

First off, could anyone help me figure out what kind (Brand, how many watts, all that. I know nothing about any of it and have been trying to read stuff on it all) of subs to get?

Something I was reading mentioned an amplifier so I guess I'd need that too unless it's already in the car. I'm looking to spend no more than $500. I want the best I can get for my money. I have a '99 Honda Accord EX so I won't need anything special like totally new speakers in my car, right? I can just plug the subs and amp in and everything will be good?

Any links to sites with information would also be greatly appreciated if you don't want to type all you know out lol.

Thanks

for $500 you could easily replace the head unit, speakers, get the amp and subs all setup at a good place that deals w/ this kind of stuff. My friend spent I believe $550 to put in dual 1,000 watt subs an alpine/ipod head unit and new speakers/amps. They save you all the trouble of wiring it, putting the power line for the subs, etc. But most importantly, thank god, they added a kill switch for the subs.

Honestly if you dont know anything about it i'd just take it to a place that does it on a regular basis. If not, please oh please video you installing it... I wanna see some electrocutions.

Cliff Notes for the lazy: Just go to a store that specializes in installing car sound systems.

OP, Do you have an idea of what size you want? Do you have a stock radio? Do you really care about name brands?

Since you're still green I'd suggest a Pre-Enclosed box so all you have to do is connect it. Running wire is made out to be a bigger problem than it actually is. If you can connect a decent-gaming setup, you can connect your sounds. :D

Let me know if you find something you like, or would like me to help find something for you. For $500 I can get you something pretty nice. (Subs,Box,Amp, and Radio)

I'm for sure going to get everything at some store that will install. The only one I really know of that does that right now is Circuit City, but I'm sure I can find more after I figure out everything I want.

I want to get dual subs for sure but haven't really thought of the size. Does the size affect the sound at all or is it just for how it fits? I'll measure my trunk soon and let you know what can fit, although I'm sure most would be fine. Also I have a stock radio and speakers, nothing special.

I really don't care about name brands at all, I'm just looking for the best for my money.

Yeah I'd probably just get a pre-enclosed one or whatever, that's mainly what I was thinking, unless I can buy everything seperately and have some store put it together for cheaper than just buying a pre-enclosed one.

Since I'm sure you guys know way more than me about this, I would like help finding something, I really don't think I could pick anything out by myself with as little as I know lol.

The radio I'd probably be able to get for my birthday so something around $100 or so but it MUST have some way of storing a ton of MP3's and stuff since I don't have an MP3 player to plug into any. If that would make it really expensive, I'm open to suggestions.

For the $500, I just want subs and an amp but if it would totally be worth it to get all new speakers I might think of that, but I'd rather spend the money on just really good subs.

Thanks for all the help

the more surface area the louder the bass. bigger subs hit harder, smaller subs have quicker response. get two 10 inch subs. you can put em in a box by yourself all you basically gotta do is put the bolts in that hold the speaker in the box. wiring it wouldnt be too hard but just get somebody to install all of it for you, it'll save you alot of headache

RMS is what you should look for instead of Watts on the woofers/amp. Manufacturers can inflate the wattage through a few different ways, but the RMS provides the most accurate desecription of power.

I used to have a Jensen amp and a single 12 inch Sony pentagon that was in a box. It was my first aftermarket stuff and I bought it used from a friend for a decent price. It was ok, but the amp would continually overheat :(. I've heard some good things about Alpine products (and I also had an Alpine head unit in my Wrangler which was great), Audiobahn, and Blaupunkt. I also experienced my friend's setup that featured equipment by Boston. Those had a great sound. OP, you can take all the product review with a grain of salt, as it's been a few years since I last did shopping for car audio. Good luck!

I have a '99 Honda Accord EX.

There's a bass bundle with that sub in my previous post and an amp that costs more than it does (wtf?).

Thanks for the help so far but the main thing I need is recommendations on exact subs and amp to get not really the sites to buy them at. Is the one in the link good? It was $400 but now only $250 and I don't think it'll be on sale much longer so any help asap would be greatly appreciated. If it's not please feel free to tell me what to get! Thanks again.

btw, now that I've read up more I'd prefer 12" subs now.
