Hi all,
Need some help. I upgraded my 60GB HD to 250GB. Well that PS3 died last week (I fixed it using the thread here) but purchased new 80GB PS3.
I did the set up on the new PS3, did the OS 2.80 update, etc. Now I want to switch out the 80GB with my 250GB that I was using in my old PS3. However, if I put that HD in my new PS3.. It won't start up. I don't remember the error word for word, but something along the lines of software can not run properly or something.. Any ideas what's going on? I put the 80GB in and the PS3 boots up. I really don't want to reformat my 250GB HD.

You'd have to reformat it because you cant just switch from a PS3 to a PS3 without reformatting it. Alas, if you wanted to save yor data you'd have to use the backup utility. In the end, you'd lose your data on one or the other hard drive.

Just redownload eveything -- it aint hard.

You need to run the back up utility using the old machine, and the 250 gb hard drive. Once you have a backup, you'll need to indeed reformat using the new machine.
Keep in mind that the backup will not keep some of the content you had. Since it's a new machine, all your PSN downloaded content will be gone.

You'll also have to reinstall the games that were on that drive. Basically, all that will be there will be your game saves. Your main ID will transfer over, but if you had some secondary IDs, they may or may not transfer over successfully.
The one thing that fails to transfer successfully is Rockband stuff. Your save, and everything else is gone, so you have to start from scratch.

Humm.. I did a back-up, harddrive swap, and restore this weekend (at about 5:30am- then went back to bed). They made it really easy.

You don't need to worry about your PSN id (or gameshares)- and your PSN games carry over too.

If you don't have anything available to perform the back-up on, you're SOL. But you can set everything up to DL off the PSN before bed and tell it to install/turn off when it's done.

thanks for the help. I got off the phone w/ Sony and he said that I should be able to swap Hard Drives. He said manually do the OS update. I really don't want to back up 100GB worth of data and reformat.. but if there is no other option.. However, should I just reformat the 250GB hard Drive in the old PS3 because the new PS3 won't boot up to reformat HD.
