Im contemplating designing my own website for keeping track of my collection. What I want to do though, is have all the games available in a database such as IGN or others. Along with being cheap, Im also lazy, so Im looking for a way to get an excel spreadsheet or something that I can import into a database for use without having to manually type in every single game, developer, release, genre, etc. Ive been looking on google but I cant really find anything other than the Nintendo game listings in PDF format from Nintendo..which I cant import into a database.

Help please?

Have you thought about writing a script to pull the info from an IGN page or IGN collection? It looks like their page source is tagged with plenty of div IDs so a regular expression could pull the info pretty easily.

I have a database for my collection, but I just add games to it as I buy them. I've thought about trying to make a public collection site where people would add games at will until the database is big enough, but in reality, nobody would use it. Not when something like IGN is around.

Hmm...thats a good idea, I may try something like that.

Ive been using IGN for a few years, but Ive grown tired of it (mainly since they changed the layout a while back), plus Ive ran across a game or two that simply wasnt in their database.

Well, if you have a Mac, try Delicious Library as it does games, movies, books, etc. I just learned about it today and I'm going to try it out tonight.

I'm currently working on a database that could be made public that is hopefully going to be much more complete and more useful than IGN's. I have most of the info you need OP, but I'm sorry to say that I'm not willing to just give it to you as I've put in a lot of time and effort putting it together. Good luck with your search though.

Thats understandable, I dont blame you one bit.

Ill probably end up having to do it the hard way, but I guess it'll be more rewarding when its finished.

I've been looking for something to keep track of my collection, which is relatively small, but haven't found anything good. I agree with siamesellama in that IGN's layout is boring, so what I've done is created a Excel spreadsheet.

EDIT: I'll give Delicious Library a try, it looks very interesting.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. If you'd like to collaborate a bit, I'm open to that.

Right now I just need a good domain name for it. It'd be a web based collection tracker sort of thing, with built in list functionality. SO www.thesite.com/zebbers/tradelist
Would automagically pull your games that are tagged for trading.

Or something like that ;)

If you mean by challenge gamefaqs.com that what I am planing to do also but then again you might mean a preview webpage to play games but not download them.

The thing is I have access to most emulated games and could score a whole slew load of PS2 ISO if I had the time and $40.

Pretty much like me you want to have a magazine or bible on games for the world to see but in your case you don't want to do the dirty work of a reporter.

Whats holding me back right now is that I am in between jobs/bum and can't find affordable server/since it would cost a lot even for the smallest servers like a $500 ( just guessing ). Also I have a room full of junk which I would sell but I have no money for shiping parts/boxes,containers,

I even have this idea of oipening a store/arcade/bar/preview store/exoctic pet store.

Exactly my intentions as well. I would like to have all the functionality of IGN and the likes, but obviously open to complete customization. Plus, I notice alot of the games in their database dont have boxart and such, which Im a big fan of.

In the end, I would like to make it open to the public in some way with overal layout completely up to them with the use of templates or something like a geocities sitebuilder.

Id like to incorporate the digital press rarity guide information for each game into the database and then give an 'average' rarity for the list.

Absolutely! This is defintitely too difficult for one person to achieve all by himself/herself. Let me know!

While what they are talking about is making a database so users can see what games they own, what you are talking about goes from being a "GameFAQs challenger" (I have no idea what exactly you mean by this) to what sounds like a warez site.

And so this post isn't completely off-topic, good luck. My personal collection isn't too large so I don't see myself using it, but it's always great to have options out there aside from IGN.

So would anybody like to get in on this? Ive got some hosting that I can use for testing and development, and Im willing to register a new domain strictly for this project.

zerofiz I would look for a webpage that has a Spreedsheet like page and just copy the definitions and edit it to your liking.

Also you could use a Spreedsheet program like Xcell if your just looking to catergorize your findings.

Yes that is exactly what I replied to. What I meant by "Challenge Gamefaqs" is that I plan to launch a gamefaqs based webpage of my own but I lack the funds or space.

There is also some otehr webpages where people host the game in a flash page and you could play the games without having to download them literally.

yeah...id be using a mysqld backend

I've got a vps server ready to go as well...just need a good domain name lol.

what about something like vgcollectors.com/.net, vgcollections.com/.net/, vgcollecting.com/.net? Thats the route I was leaning towards but I dunno.

Also, if you want to join forces on this, hit me up on MSN/AIM or something and we'll see what happens

One thing I've been playing around with is Open Media Lending Database. It's an open source application for cataloging just about anything. It's still a work in developement, but it's looking good. It's around version .81. It can also be a little hard to install since it requires apache, php, and mysql to be installed. Check out the demo on the site to see what it's like before installing it. This is a web based application so if you a web site you can put it on there. It even includes a way track to track any games you have you have loaned out to friends.

It can be a little hard to install.
