Wasn't sure If I should put this thread here but it seems like the most logical place...

Anyways. Simply put, I need a new phone. It has to be under AT&T, too. So far, Im really interested in the Tilt but its a bit pricy for me.

Ive been using prepaid phones until now and Im fed up with them eating up $25 cards on a weekend. Im a big txter so the phone I want has to have one of those Qwerty slideout pads or whatever. Im new to the whole contract cell phone thing so if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

I thought about the iPhone but...Im interested in the 80 gig Zune 2/ Ipod Classic...and besides, I dont really like joining big crowds.

And it has to be under AT&T since my family's plan is under that, and I have to get a phone and join that plan or else I get no phone.

Edit: I posted this on cheapassgamer to get a really good deal on a nice phone, so I dont want to spend 400/500 bucks on one. $150-200 is my target range

gotcha. well, I used to have a razr v3r, and it was very bad, so at the very least, stay away from that one. I have a friend who is happy with the blackjack, might want to look into that one.

I have a Motorola SLVR with AT&T and it's treated me well. It's not a slide out phone, and doesn't have the little typing keyboard, but it's a nice phone. It also has itunes on it with a removable micro SD card for the music, and you can also put other stuff on the card to transfer. It's a very durable phone, I've dropped it, and thrown it a lot.

I had the Samsung Blackjack when I was on my family's AT&T plan (before switching to my own SERO Sprint plan), and I loved it. It's very similar to my current MotoQ, which I also love.

Windows Mobile 5 is very customizable through third-party programs, you can get it to do (or not do) whatever you want through registry editors, if the feature isn't supported natively. The keyboard is great for texting.

Back to Sprint though, seriously consider it. See if SERO still offers unlimited texts. That's why I made the switch. My choices were $10 for a family line and an additional $15 for unlimited texts with Cingular (no data plan), or $30 for a great SERO line with unlimited texts and data included. The extra $5 a month is certainly worth much higher bandwidth and being able to go online as much as I want. Services like Orb, Google Maps, Fandango, etc have all been extremely convenient.

Anyway, yeah, Blackjacks are good for AT&T. Thin, good keyboard, uses WM5.

The Motorola SLVR has the AIM service on it, you can also have text messaging on it, with pictures, videos, and such. It's just the txt messaging plan you pick. I have the plan with unlimited txts to anyone on the AT&T service and 200 msgs to anyone else for 10 dollars a month.

If it has to be AT&T, you might as well get an iPhone. The carrier is the only reason I don't have one and am waiting for the Ocean 2 to come out. There is a $299 model of the iPhone, you know. If you are going to spend anywhere over $100 on a phone and have to go with AT&T, might as well spend a bit more and get the iPhone.

Try the SE w580 they have, it has AIM and the walkman. I just upgraded from the w810 and its a good phone key pad is a little small for texting. Replaced my Ipod last year with it so one less thing to carry around.

Have you used the iPhone for texting? It sucks, in my opinion. I know some people like it... but I really don't understand why. Backspacing all the time, cumbersome alternate characters... I prefer the tactile QWERTY keyboards of standard smartphones.

The iPhone has some advantages to basic WM5 phones, but not enough to warrant "if you are going to spend anywhere over $100 on a phone and have to go with AT&T, might as well spend a bit more and get the iPhone." Samsung's Blackjack is a third of the price. That's a huge different that, depending on the consumer, is certainly not always worth it.

I have an iphone and I love it. The texting is simple once you get the hang of it. I used to have a cingular 3125 and a Sony Ericsson w810i. Out of those two I preferred my w810i. It was easier to use and small. I suggest you check out letstalk.com. They have better deals than the At&t store. Also you can do upgrades through amazon.com as well.

Why don't you consider a blackberry? they have nice keyboards and Cingular has the blackberry that even has a GPS receiver. It's rather expensive though so -_-

A Blackberry Pearl Refurb is 50 dollars on Cingular's website.
A BlackJack is currently 70 dollars at Walmart.

I also suggest the Nokia N75.

I recommend the Motorola A1200. You can't get it in the states (yet) so online is your best bet. I ordered mine off eBay and I just love it. It's a bit pricey, I got mine for $240ish but I've seen it go easily for $300. It runs on a Linux-based OS so almost everything is pretty customizable on the phone.

As far as IMing/Texting, it may be a bit difficult at first since you use a stylus (it has an onscreen keyboard or you can use the handwriting-recognition mode) instead of your thumbs, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty simple to use. (It's also considered a smartphone)

It's also a quadband phone so it uses the same GSM network that AT&T/Cingular (which is what I'm using) is on so all you gotta do is plug in your SIM card.
