I'm moving from the NY - Jersey suburbs to the Philadelphia- NJ suburbs in the middle of September. However, unlike a few years ago when I moved out of my parents house, I have a lot more stuff coming with me (couches, wife, HDTV, office funiture, etc.).

So I really need to hire a mover, and I have no idea where to start. I found a list from some NJ Movers Association website, but every sort of review I've ever seen online has been a horror story like, "they refused to unload my stuff from the truck until I paid them an extra $500" or "they stole my PS3."

I'm not looking for any sort of deal, since I get the feeling that this is one of those situations where the more expensive places are the ones least likely to rip you off, but if anyone has done this recently and has any advice on how to pick one, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I know there are a lot of NJ CAGs out there, so if anyone can reccomend a dependable company, that would be awesome too.

Hmm, probably could pick them up on the street corner in Morristown if that's the route you go.

You can't just rent a UHaul of whatever size you need, buy 5 of your friends lunch/dinner/take em out for beers after helping out and call it good? I wouldn't trust any moving company with my things personally.

Unfortunately, that's not really an option. All the friends I would ask to do this are too spread out to really be able to help. Also, this needs to get done on a weekday which make it even harder.

Hehe, Mexicans. Are they registed with the Better Business Bureau?

Sure.
Try emove.com. And try to go with the highest rating movers there, and read their rating description.
I've never seen that website before, I'll have to check it out.

Thanks!

try to talk to friends or friends of friends who might have moved or know someone who has moved recently. You could get lucky and get a good mover recommendation out of it.

Another suggestion is to move the little stuff yourself. Get the Uhaul, pack up all the stuff that you can lift yourself and move that stuff on your own. Get a mover to move the big stuff like couch, fridge etc. It will usually cost less since they dont have much to move and they are less likely to steal your fridge then they are a box that says electronic equipment. It's also a shorter job for them and makes them less likely to pull the more money stunt if they are only movign a couple big items back and forth to the truck.
You can keep the uhaul for a few days and it wont add up to that much. Its really the best way to move imo. It does require a lot of hard work, but it's worth the peace of mind.

I got really turned off of movers when I was at one of my jobs a while back. I got to see a bunch of different ones, and every single one of them looked really shady. I also know a bunch of movers that have been in and out of jail numerous times.

On the other hand, I just had a friend move into town that that about two huge truckloads of stuff, each truckload being a different mover. And both of those movers seemed to be really great.

The major difference between the two was that the former was mainly local movers and the latter were a national. I don't know the names of the good movers though, but it's at least something to consider that a more established company may have movers that are more trustworthy.

This sounds like a good idea.
