I'm wanting to spend around 300$ or less. This is what I found so far.

I don't have a preffrence either way. I like AMD and Intel. So either or is fine.
If you have an opinion either way please tell me and tell me why you think that way also.

I'll be reusing my 8800GTS video card, 500gig sata HD ect.
 
Both of those processors are kinda junk.

I would just save some more and buy something that is competent.
 
I wouldn't call the Allendale E4500 and Brisbane 5000+ junk. Unless someone is doing hardcore computationally heavy tasks, there's no need to spend more money on processors.

They both should overclock to about 3 GHz or higher (but may require aftermarket cooling solutions for highest speeds).

I'm personally more familiar with the Core 2 Duos and that Gigabyte mobo is a good board for a good price. E4500 also has an 11x max multiplier, meaning that you can get a nice speed even with a reasonable fsb.

I haven't used AMD since the Athlon and Athlon XP days, so I have little to add on the Brisbane chips, but the reviews have been pretty positive... although, they are a bit slower clock for clock than the Core 2 Duos.
 
Thanks BigT, i'm leaning towards the Intel also. I've never built/had an intel system so always wanted one.

Hoping my current PSU will be good enough. It's a 480w thermaltake PSU.
 
They are Junk, you will want to replace them in about a year.

I would just save the money, and buy a new penryn( which can overclock to over 4ghz).

Its better to spend more money now, and not worrying about upgrading for another 3 years.
 
I wouldnt call it junk exactly, but I don't feel it's time to upgrade yet either. I'm running a socket 939 that still runs anything I throw at it, Crysis the exception, smooth as butter, and I suspect it will still be able to for a good part of this year. I'm waiting to see what AMD rolls out as it's next socket methinks.
 
AMD is going to be crushed by Intels Native Quadcore. It's not worth the money to buy crap now, and want to upgrade later.

Spend more now and save in the long run.

Why would he need to replace a 2.2Ghz dual core CPU in one year? Not even Crysis requires a super fast dual core or a quad core CPU.

You don't have to replace a CPU just because there are newer ones available. You replace a CPU when the current one isn't cutting it. And the E4400 is still get'in it done. Especially when overclocked.

Yeah seriously... not sure what you use your computer for InuFaye but I know people will 939 X2s that can still handle most of today's games fairly well.

BTW, do not get that motherboard if you plan to OC at all. The VDIMMs are limited to 1.95V which limits it to a few select brands of memory and almost no OCing capability unless you underclock your memory.

I don't plan on upgrading this computer once I fix this. It will stay as I set it and then probly next year I'll build a completely new computer and give this one to my fiance soon to be wife.
 
if you are upgrading your Mobo, you better buy the Asus A8N-SLI DELUXE or the Asus A8N32-SLI DELUXE Mobo which Asus builds top of the line Mobos!! i have 2 Asus A8N32-SLI DELUXE Mobos and 1 Asus A8N-SLI DELUXE Mobo which i have no problem with these Mobos, and besides , you said that you are using the 8800gts Video card that you have which is excellent with the Asus Mobos that i mentioned to you! I also run 2 8800gts video card on my Mobos which should have the Goldfingers on top for SLI capablities!! AMD is the only way to go!!

And I'm using a Corsair VX 450w Power Supply, so I think your Thermaltake will be fine. I chose my processor, because it was what I could afford and is very overclockable. This page shows that O/C Allendales e2xxx can be very competive.

I just put a pc together also

1. Gigabyte MB = GA-P35-DS3L
a very basic board but supports 1tb drives and the latest cpus. Also you can update the bios without the cpu.

2. Core 2 duo E8400

3. Maxtor 1TB drive

4. Vista

5. 4gigs of ram

6. roswell 550 psu

7. antec 900 = this case is kickass. Not to big and not to small. Airflow is great.

8. 8800gt

Everything else I stripped from the old pc a few fans, keyboard, mouse, lcd, z5500 speakers (which are kickass) ect.

The high points for me are
silent
cool
looks good
boots fast
runs perfect
Can play everything out now
lots of room to upgrade

The low points
vista works fine but there was no need to move from xp
some of my old hardware doesn't work with vista
No sli
the case isn't really good for moving stuff in and out a lot.
