New Pope is experienced in tackling the tough issues, of course I mean Harry Potter!

Looks like the new Pope isn't a big JK Rowling fan:

In one response, dated March 2003, he wrote in German: "It is good that you enlighten us on the Harry Potter matter, for these are subtle seductions that are barely noticeable, and precisely because of that have a deep effect and corrupt the Christian faith in souls even before it could properly grow."

I'm curious - did anyone here read one of those Hairy Pothead books and decide to go Wiccan?

Even more curious - did anyone read about the magic tricks mentioned in the bible(walking on water, parting seas, talking to snakes, etc) and think - I want to try that out!

I understand why he is against Harry Potter. The Catholic Church is against witchcraft and magic. Its a loose interpretation of one of the 10 commandments (Paraphrasing: "thy shall have no other god besides Me"). In a nutshell, they believe that if you support magic, you are supporting some other entity other than the Catholic God.

I remember this was taught to me when I was in Catholic School; That was a long time ago and I am no longer Catholic.
So is it wrong for me just to read the book for pure entertainment (according to the Church of course)?
It's never OK to have pure entertainment according to the church.

But you see, that's exactly the point: the book WANTS you to think that you're just reading the book for pure entertainment. However, with every page you read, your soul becomes more and more tarnished with pure, undiluted evil. One day, you get passed over for a promotion, and summon a demon to devour your boss's soul without even realizing that you're doing it. Then you're good and damned, all because you read about some dumb-ass kid on a flying broom. Do you really want to risk that?

Real Wiccans have come out and said several times that the wizardry, etc. in the books is nothing like the stuff they practice.

I read the books and watch the movies for entertainment. I am also a Catholic. Thankfully, I have experienced no negativity from being a Harry Potter reader/viewer.

Even if those books are "corrupting" Christians, I'm not worried. My faith is strong, and I know that my Lord will protect me from evil. Simple as that.

What about protecting you from fellow followers?

"Dear Lord, please protect me from your followers.". A friend of mind had a bumper sticker like that and told me about all the shit she got.

I'm just glad to know the Pope is so focused on important issues like this instead of, y'know, sex abuse scandals and the like.

Hmm... I dunno. We're Catholic.

Oh, I see. Then you'll want 'Nobody poops but you and thats concentraited evil coming out of you'.

 I want one of those. Sure, I'm an athiest, but I throughly enjoy seeing people get pissed off instead of turning the other cheek like they should.

It's from Family Guy

Peter: "We need a book to potty train our son."
Clerk: "This is the most popular book 'Everybody Poops'. It has won many awards"
Peter: "Ah, we're Catholic"
Clerk: "Oh in that case you'll want "You're a Very Bad Boy and That's Concentrated Evil Coming Out of You'"

Well we know those little boys weren't reading Harry Potter while they were being raped. The priests were just trying to do their jobs.
