New Yorkers -- any info on new online sales tax?

Does anyone know any more information about Spitzer's online sales tax program (which would require us to pay sales tax on orders from sites like Amazon even if they don't operate in the state of NY). I buy not just games but very expensive college books and the like from online retailers, so I was wondering if anyone here knows who/how to contact to oppose this or knows of any groups/organizations that are lobbying against it or whatever.

I think NY sales tax is 8% so basically if you wanted to buy say rockband online from amazon instead of paying $150 you'd pay $162.

Spitzer can eat shit. How much more government in this country do we need? I will do some research on this.. Is it proposed or has it passed the legislative branch?

I hate to say this this way, but I pity the CAGs in NY state, since your government is looking for any place they can tax it seems. My one friend and her family kept ordering cigarettes from a place online that operated out of NY state and they ended up getting a bill in the mail saying they owed tax $$$ for the smokes.

As others have said already, that's the main reason to buy online, since there's usually no tax.

My one friend and her family(who live in PA like me) ended up getting a tax bill from the state of NY for the cigarettes they bought online through 1-2 sites. This was shortly after your state's attorney general went after many online sites for not collecting tax, I believe.

That's one reason I usually buy SOME stuff online too, to avoid paying the taxes on the items, which can really add up on larger ticket items.

Well, technically in AZ you're supposed to pay a use tax if you buy stuff online and you're the final user. It's an honesty thing. So I guess it's already here. How are they going to track your purchases.

I live in Maricopa county, Phoenix/Scottsdale, which means our tax is 8.02%.

I want to more back to NY so bad I'd pay whatever.

WTFook? That's gunna suck testicles for me. Damn Spitzer, want more money for themselves.

Increase subway fares, make us pay taxes online, WTFook is this?
technically as of now, u are supposed to report all online transactions. but nobody does it
Doing that would suck major balls.

Don't forget when you have a garage sale that you must report that income as well!!

AFAIK, no one's said anything about it going through yet. Everyone here is just kind of waiting for the shoe to drop.

Stupid Spitzer. Glad I didn't vote for him, but I'm sad that other people did.

Yeah so I found out that it's in the budget proposal and hasn't been passed yet. If you live in New York -- WRITE YOUR STATE ASSEMBLYMEN AND SENATORS!!!

If you're not from New York, write Governor Spitzer as a concerned citizen of the state of X who doesn't want New York to set a negative precedent for other states by forcing mandatory tax on out-of-state online transactions.
