I wish there was a defined age where this started with my boys. It has been a few years though since I've needed to really wake anyone up besides myself. IF this helps my son, I'll consider it a win. If not, the retail release is early 2025 and it'll likely sell out from the nintendo online store and I can either just keep it for myself (at 50yo, for some reason I do like clocks and radios... and small electronics) or I can probably flip it to ebay where completed listings show around $185 on average with shipping.

On a side note, right now I'm feeling the end of daylight savings each morning when I wake up. It's hard when it's still pitch black at 6am. I'm looking forward to it ending November 3rd even though it screws up doing anything outside after work & dinner.
I’m going through perimenopause so waking up is not a problem. Sleeping through the night is. Any ambient light from this Alarmo would not be good. I have to have a quiet, pitch black room now along with no caffeine past noon and no alcohol pretty much ever if I have any hope of getting decent sleep.

I’m sure you’ve had this recommendation, but when I got really terrible insomnia a couple years ago, melatonin really helped me. Different circumstances, obviously, but figured I’d mention it.

That's a shame, but easily fixable with a standard sleep mask. I did look into it (over on reddit) and the clock does dim down really low at night. The pictures seemed pretty reasonable and less than the alarm clock that I have in my room simply because I like having a clock (standard red segmented numbers) in my room at night vs looking at my phone which I keep on the brightest retina burning setting.

I don't really know the full summary but I know the Switch 2 name was confirmed but I didn't really read everything so I'm not really sure about all of the leaks. Someone else here can summarize it better.

I'm sure informally it's been called Switch 2 for ages but I'll be incredibly shocked if that's the official name, Nintendo has never ever done that before and there's really no good reason for them to start doing it now. Also I'd guess the final official name choice is one of the last decisions they really have to make before announcing it.

Well, the "Wii U" type of name graduation certainly will not be happening again. That caused all sorts of confusion in the marketspace. "why would I need to upgrade to a Wii U if I already have a Wii?", "what does it do, is it the same thing?"

I believe there's a very good chance it's the "Switch 2" bc of not wanting to drop that namesake, and the associated success of the original. It's the natural progression of the system. Clearly the next version.

If you thought they were going to drop the "Switch" moniker then something else would make sense. But they want to maintain that congruency. It's going to be that same handheld + home console hybrid.

If they go away from playing Switch carts in the next version then they would def change the name. But that would be a very, very dumb move. They would lose all of the ground they just gained in market share. That would be like starting over again, with most people still staying on their OG Switch.

Switch 2 is the simplest way to go that seems the least confusing from a consumer perspective if it's fully BC. This also means they wouldn't have to rebrand Nintendo Switch Online and other stuff they've named Switch. Building on the Switch branding and BC similar to the Game Boy to Game Boy Color and then Game Boy Advance makes the most sense for the future to me. Let us keep using our Switch stuff but give us new stuff that makes the upgrade worth it.

As long as it's fully backwards compatible without some weird changes, Switch Advance, Super Nintendo Switch, or whatever other name will work just fine. My concern with Switch 2 as a name is that might come along with some sort of "evolution" and no compatibility it which case the name will be the least of the problems.

I still think the biggest issue with the Wii U name was it seemed like it could really be an attachment for the original and that was confusing and off putting when it wasn't. But even bigger fundamentally the lack of multi-touch never made a damn bit of design sense and severely limited what could be ported to it.

You guys have thought of a bunch of great names, but what if it's not BC at all?

Greedy Switch

Lots of parents and gamers will not rebuy game libraries so if they want to shoot themselves in the foot then be my guest Nintendo. Also onboard for Switch 2 as the name as makes the most sense.

Guess Analogue will get some more money from me. How long is before release?
*Release is Q1 2025

Nintendo's next system is just going to be called switch 2. In a world of midgen refreshes it’s the most surefire way to make it clear to casual consumers that this is a new console, while still capitalizing on the success of the switch. Immediately implies the console is hybrid, backwards compatible and connected to the same Nintendo account. I would prefer they keep with the fun new names for each system, but the pocket books are not going to let that happen this time.

It'd be nicer if they tricked it out a little bit so that the touch screen is fully functional like the ds and up line. As I'd love to play some stuff like rhythm or puzzle point and click stuff with touch controls.

Port theaterhythm curtain call and make more of those too. I would possibly buy it at launch if that happened. As outside of smash that's another game that could get me. Moreso if newegg has a coupon again and a bundle.

I'm actually a little surprised we haven't had an announcement by now. Seems crazy that in a few days we'll hit the eight year anniversary of the original Switch unveiling.

Just got the Mario Party Tote Bag in the mail. Much bigger and nicer than I expected.

The game does not arrive until tomorrow. Good job Best Buy

Edit: Mario Party game was just delivered. Tracking changed from delivery tomorrow to delivered.

I will say, this discussion has me thinking about the possibility more than I ever was previously. But it would be a big, big mistake to go away from Switch 1 backwards compatibility. I realize that there's a decent possibility that Nintendo goes with a new proprietary cart format. But customers are already very satisfied with their current handhelds. There are already a ton of other ones on the market and why would you want to start over? That would be a huge boner decision. All that equity and interest you've built up over the last 7 years would be gone in an instant, and most customers would keep buying original Switch titles. You'd have two kinds of games at the store, and a fragmented customer base. Everything they worked so hard to bypass with their current 2-in-1 system.

It also opens the door for any primary console competitor to launch their own handheld, if you want to start over from scratch. I just don't see that happening.

Alarmo showed up today in the mail. Delivered by fedex. I didn't have much time with it but I ran through the setup. It takes a bit to get through all of the setup but it does seem to work to detect laying down and going to sleep and which side of the bed the clock is on and so on. Going to give it a couple day test run and then let my son take it back to his apartment on Sunday. Oddly you do have to connect it to your Nintendo account to download the extra themes. I didn't bother with that part but did get it online and updated it. Overall it's pretty slick. The big button on the top is also a dial for twisting through menus/lists.

Here’s our ‘we have Alarmo at home:’

With Kirby…which Alarmo doesn’t even offer as an option. Oh yeah, it has an old 30 pin Apple connection. Got to be 20 years old now and it still works.

Serious reply i actually didn't have a cellphone until 10 or so years ago. only got it for work. As I was typically home so on the rare chance someone would need to contact me I'd have the landline.

I only just got a smart phone 2 or 3 years ago after shitty Verizon dropped service for my phone.

I don't have a problem getting up. I grabbed an Alarmo thinking it might help my youngest son who struggles to get up. Like his phone at times will tell him he's missed 17 alarms. Worst case, it does no good and I flip it to ebay where they go for enough over what I paid to more than pay the fees and give me a small profit.

I'm still testing it, figured someone might be curious how this thing actually is. It does, at night, dim down to completely black screen when it doesn't detect movement. And if you do move it only barely lights up. It's definitely easier to see than my old radio alarm clock across the room.

Does alarmo have lighting for waking up as well like getting brighter over time like the sunrise clocks?

The nob on the top of it does indeed glow. Initially it was off but when I opted not to get up it came on. Not sure if it was gradual or just full bright. I wasn’t expecting that as I skipped the instructions, but it was a nice bonus since I wake up before the sun rises and it’s very dark in the house. This definitely helped light the room up.
