Not buying a PS3 til Design Upgrade

bullsrfive

CAGiversary!
Okay we all know the PS3 is gonna get an upgrade sooner or later. It happened for the PS1 and PS2. Getting a new design upgrade to a slimmer and smaller or cooler looking PS3 is just the inevitable. Hmm, how long did it take for the PS1 and PS2 to get get their design upgrades after their initial launch?

If you want information, use Google or Wikipedia. There was no need to create a new topic asking a question either of those resources could have answered.

209 years.

5 years, go ahead and wait. You'll be waiting forever than, by that time the PS4 will be announce and coming out the next year.

40 gig already has a better heatpipe and smaller cell. 75 watts less power consumption.

Will be interesting to see if the new design ends up less waffle ironey. I think it would have been nice if sony went ahead and made that boomerang thinger for the DS3. It's ugly, but it looks like it would be hell of comfortable.

If that's the case these boards shouldn't even exist.

Good luck. I'd say 2010/2011.
Uh, a design won't come for around 4 years. If you want to wait, go ahead, but you probably won't get near full BC like with the 60GB version.
I doubt it. Sony will probably have it working through emulation pretty well in 4 years, otherwise they're lazy :p

TRUTH.

juuuus kiddin'

I don't know why you'd start with this mindset so early in the console's life....

I'm quite curious to know what PS3v2 will look like but I have to agree with the others, it's going to be quite a while before we see a complete overhaul. The PS1 didn't get a redesign until the PS2 hit the scene about 5 to 6 years later. The PS2 redesign took approximately 3-4 years. The trend seems to suggest a reduction in redesign time but with Sony's current woes, I'd say making the box sexier is far from a priority.

Is the 40GB PS3 supposed to have a different look or just the newer innards? I bought the system at launch but I like the idea of the system using less power and running more quietly (and in turn cooler) but I don't like the idea of losing backwards compatibility...

A friend of mine brought his PS3 over last weekend to get some demos and updates on our internet. I hadn't really seen one side-by-side with the other systems before then in person, but wow, is that thing huge.

A slight size reduction would be great :)

It's basically an inward redesign. You'd be losing more than you'd gain. A lot more. Anyway, the PS3s have been rock solid so far.

okay, let us know when you get one.

You know, I hadn't considered that. Good of ya to point that out.

I, for one, hate the size of the 360 PSU. It's a fucking joke.

If the PSU was internal in the 360, than it would be just as huge was the PS3 and would have had way more RROD than it already did.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear about the 40GB running cooler.

My old 20GB was like having a fire place in my room.

Hopefully it won't be anywhere like that when I pick up the 40 gig on Friday.

why is everyone complaining about the heat? it's almost winter. I don't need to buy a heater for my room when the ps3 is just as good.
Anybody know the release date for the ps4?
Man I wish they'd set the date already so I can start camping at Best Buy
You cared enough to post that you didn't care ;)
I care about informing the OP that I don't care... but I don't care about what he does. He could be ready to slit his wrists and I wouldn't give a damn.

LOL This is true. The console may be cool, but the thing really does heat up the room.

lol youre going to be in for a long wait...
oh well at least you plan on buying a ps3 thats all that matters!
id say theyd make it half the size and white.

The only thing I can see the PS3 change soon other than shrinking their GPU and CPU would be updating their BR Drives to higher speeds.

I think it reads at x1 right now (?), but a x4 (at least) would be a lot nicer and really minimize those load times compared to right now.

Seriously!

I left my PS3 on to download a few demos while I went out for curry with my buddy and when I got home my room was nice and warm! :D

Ooooh, hadn't thought of that. I think this may be what I wait for. I need some reason to wait otherwise I'll be too tempted to buy one soon ;). A slim PS3 would be nice of course, but that will be a while. An upgraded BR drive is a more likely thing within the next year or two. I can wait that long. How long before FF XIII is a Greatest Hits title so I can score it cheap? ;)

Hm... I wonder if it's possible to upgrade the BR yourself? Keep in mind however, that 1x on a bluray is closer to the higher speeds on a DVD.

By the way, the PS3 has already undergone a die shrink with the
40gb model.
When they eventually redesign, the first thing that has to go is the dust magnet plastic shell.
Anyone care to fill me in on when "easy to get dirty" became a legitimate complaint? I remember when the PSP came out, in many reviews the only negative was "it gets fingerprints really easily". I've never heard anyone complain that their car looked bad after they drove it through mud.

Overall, I like the PS3's design. Compared to my other AV components, it's a reasonable size, and I'm glad the power supply is internal.

I see the same thing happening to PS3 that happened to PS1/PS2, where the load times in early games are slow, but after a while, they greatly increase.

What speed an "X" represents is entirely different on each different media. I.e., 1X on a DVD is about 9X on a CD..
http://www.plextor.com/english/support/faqs/G00013.htm

Bluray is similar (that an "X" is not the same as a DVD) but I can't find the exact measurement. I did find a mention that 4x BR is about 13X DVD, so 2X BR would be about 7.5X DVD. The PS3 BR is not the same speed as the PS2 DVD.
