well ive never really had a problem with bestbuy. i went there a little while ago trying pricematch a maxtor 250gb harddrive with a compusa ad. if your not aware compusa has the ultra 16 250gb hardrive at 99.99 with no rebates.

the guy comes back and tell me he cant do the pricematch because its under cost or something like that. he said that the company loses $45 dollars if they pricematch it so he wont do it. i told him that defeats the purpose of pricematch but he continues on by saying but we price match all the time. what a dick. i wasnt in the mood for it so i didnt put up much of a fight.

Can they refuse a pricematch? wtf
Can they refuse a pricematch? wtf
does their store policy state that they will price match each and every item in the store at a lower cost, as long as you provide a current and valid ad.....if not, then they can refuse

i know ive done a pricematch for hardrives before at bestbuy. i dont know why this time the guy "couldnt" do it......

i was really hoping to get the hardive becaus ei just got my new pc parts and want to set it up asap...and i have a $100 gift card so it would of worked out perfectly.

Moved, and that's a load of bull, i was able to PM Ace Combat 5 easily, they must have lsot a fortune. nothing says they can refuse a PM "because they want to".

i think im going to try my luck at another best buy. i ave to find one that actually has it in stock though. this is so annoying.

You could always buy it at best buy, then got to the customer service counter and get your price adjust (you get your price adjusted to the cheaper price plus 10% of the difference). I find this to be easier, although more time consuming. The people that do the price adjustment generally don't ask questions or need to get permission, they just do it.

Best Buy Pricematch Policy

Store Price Guarantee
If, within 30 days* (14 days for computers, monitors, printers and notebooks, camcorders, digital cameras and radar detectors) of your purchase from Best Buy, you find a local competitor (excluding Internet competitors) offering a lower price on an available product of the same brand and model, we'll refund the difference plus another 10% of the difference. Just bring us a current ad or other verifiable written proof of the lower price, plus your original Best Buy sales receipt to claim your refund. This offer good only on all new in-the-box products of the same brand and model that are available in-store at any other local authorized retailer. It does not apply to competitor's one-of-a-kind or other limited quantity offer, or when a bonus or free offer (such as special financing program or manufacturer's rebate) is included in the purchase. Offer does not apply to BestBuy.com pricing. All returns exchanges and price adjustments must be made in the country of original purchase. Go to the customer service counter for details.

*In California, excludes cellular, digital and PCS phones and pagers.

The same text should be displayed on a huge sign on the wall next to the Customer Service area where it is in plain view.

Sounds to me like he was BSing you. Go back, find the sign, and point him to it and ask him where on the sign does it say they can refuse a pricematch because it is below cost.

yea i read that sign at the customer service...i think im going to try it again. i hate going through this crap. i dont even feel like shopping there.

I would try it again, half the time pm problems are just due to whoever is working that day and what reasoning they decide to make up for not pm'
ing. Many employees like to make up their own policies because they think they are saving the store money.

I had a manager at ToysRus once who refused to pm a wavebird to the CC price of $30 from the ToysRus price of $35. I had the ad, showed her, and she shot me down saying they didn't match everyday prices only "sale" prices. Of course there was nothing in the ad that stated sale or regular price, but that is beside the point. After sitting there speechless at her stupidity and lack of reason, I just decided to come back later and pm it. I did, and got my pm no problem. I also verified the pm policy by calling TRU customer service, I was right she was wrong, but some employees like to make up whatever policies they feel like.

However, it does say that "within 30 days* ... of your purchase from Best Buy". This policy will ensure that you can buy it at Best Buy and they will price adjust it. I mean, it's written so.

They aren't required by some policy that they have to pricematch everything, and where you haven't purchased it yet, well, that guy was just being a jerk. He could've, but he used his "discretion" and opted not to. Crappy, yes, but what can you do?

I'd recommend buying it, then walking over to customer service for the price match. The policy is as clear as day, so it should go smoothly. If they give you a hard time, tell them that you want to return it then and you'll take your business elsewhere.

They don't give extra 10% back if you PM, so yeah, go ahead and buy it then show them the ad is a better way to go - you pay 10% less than the advertised price. Be a REAL  customer and make your fellow CAGers pround.

ok so i should buy it? the only prob is that the bestbuy price for this is 169.99.

so i buy it then walk right back over to customer service and they have to adjust the price + 10%. what happens if they dont want to adjust the price.

if they dont adjust and pm, just return it and get your whole total back

make a big stink, say you'll never shop there again, ask for a manager, and be loud so other customers hear how sucky bb is

Yeah, it would probably just be easier to get it from CompUSA than to make a total ass of yourself at Best Buy with the yelling and screaming and whatnot.
i think im just gonna go too compusa..i rather give them my money...ill just use the gift card at bb for something else.
Aw, come on, why miss out on another chance to be a Devil Customer  and stick it to them?

You don't have to be loud and obnoxious to make your point. That's the final option for intelligent people and the first for stupid people. Seeing as how you're discussing this I can only assume you're a fairly intelligent person. Don't let some idiot chase you away because he's a BB zombie. Do what's been previously suggested--make the purchase then go to customer service and KINDLY ask for the price adjustment. IF they try to decline the adjustment, be prepared. Have a print-out of the return policy in hand and point out to them exactly what it says. If they still decline you, don't waste time arguing w/them and KINDLY ask for a manager. Repeat this process KINDLY up the management chain until you receive the correct response. That $100 gift card should be the swing factor since you'll be paying directly out of pocket at CompUSA (assuming you don't have gift cards there). Remember, the key is to be persistent yet still polite. Plus, a nice bonus would be to flash a huge grin at the jackhole who denied you the first time. Now get going, mister, and march yourself down to BB and handle your business! Well, maybe you should wait until they open.

Very sound advice. If you keep your head and you're cool about it, there's nothing they can do to say no. If it's a legal ad for a product they have in stock, and it's the same product, with a cheaper price without any rebates figured into the price, they have to match it, by their rules. None of this "below cost" crap. That's complete BS.

The real trick is that they will only MATCH the price at time of purchase. If you want to squeeze the 10% out of them, you need to buy it for full price, then walk over to the customer service counter and have them PM + 10% it.

i just got my CC bill from best buy and they charged my credit card for all the Guides even though they didnt have them in the store and i wasnt able to pick them up. No big deal since they were only 1 cent each but People Watch your bills
My policy is this: ALWAYS get the lowest price possible, even if you have to raise hell to get it.
I'm glad your dignity is worth so little.

A store can refuse to sell any product to any customer for any reason. That customer then has legal recourse in several ways, including potentially if the refusal was discriminatory, suit.

That said, they should pricematch. I can understand the Store's reluctance since it is below cost, and they aren't there to give away free hard drives, but in the interest of good service they should match.

That said, Best Buy's devil customer policy makes a little sense. I would say that giving up on 20% of your customer base is suicide, but I would heartily recommended that some customers are not to be kept. I'd say something closer to 2% or less.

Some customers cost you money no matter what. Constant returns, tying up employees for hours with no purchase, even abuse employees verbally. I can give examples. ;)

With all price match policies, don't they have an out that states they can choose not to price match (Managers discretion)? I thought they did, but I could be wrong. I have never had a problem price matching at BB, but I am usually PMing a DVD or video game. Nothing like a hard rive.
My policy is this: ALWAYS get the lowest price possible, even if you have to raise hell to get it.
There's an example. I wouldn't want a customer to come in and raise hell every time another store undercut my prices. I would probably end up asking that customer very politely not to come back. Ever.

It really depends on who the dept mgr is at the time.

Last week I pricematched Champions RTA for $39.99 and then tried to use a GGC and they would not let me use the coupon. That same day and at the same store I went back with a friend and decided to price match Shadows of Rome for $37.99. I gave the girl my GGC and she used it. So I got it for $32.99.

Plus the fact I had some reward Zone coupons (2x$20) I got SOR for $12.99 and I got CRTA for $19.99.

It just depends on who is working there at the time. One manager would not let me use the GGC coupon while the other said it was ok.

I would definetly go back because I have never really been denied a price match before at Best Buy. I think the employee did not know what he was talking about.

Its not bestbuy this time, its the people. Bitch enough and you will get past those people and someone will just give it to you.(which you deserve because they do pricematch)

On a side note i almost said we price match
guys how much better is sata than ide. im really considering not even getting this drive anymore
SATA is a newer standard than PATA IDE, and they tend to be better & faster drives. As long as your motherboard supports it, of course.

after reading this topic about the 250 gig 16mb cashe maxtor i was like wtf am i doing? i almost missed out on it. i checked compusa.com and it showed my local store had inventory, i show up and wait hella long to get ahold of one of the employees . i tell him they are out on the floor but i know they have stock and this lamer is like oh yeah those are defective ones thats why they show up on the website. at this point im like why is compusa pulling a BB but i just walk out. i then try circuit city (i wasnt thinking) and obviously they had nothing. so with defeat as my destination i go to BB. there is a huge emptiness where all the drives used to be. thinking like a fellow CAG, i check behind all the 300gig satas, and low and behold the exact drive i wanted in the cuts. i talked with the BB employee and he did a price match for me no problem, and i got them to add one of the 250 gig 8mb cache ones as well for the same price (they werent paying attention, but its still a 30 dollar savings ). i was expecting the dillz based off this topic, so i had the reverse exp as the OP.

Best Buy has gotten me several $5 new game deals over the years (mostly B&M but a couple online), but I haven't gotten much from them recently beyond a couple of Retrocon controllers. BB defintely isn't the greatest, but I do get an occasional deal from them. Thus, BB is okay in my book.

In my experience, most stores usually bitch and moan about price-matching other stores regardless of their official policy, so getting a hassle about this is just something I've come to expect. Again, BB is just another store in regard to dealing with this PITA.

Well just got back from BB, I went to buy 2 dvd's and I was price matching with CC and Target, as soon as I mentioned that I was pricematching, the stupid cashier took down the sku numbers and walked to an empty register, a couple minutes later she came back and she told me that she could not price match one of the dvd's because it would be under cost. I thought WTF! and I asked since when do you guys do this? She said "since forever" which is BS since I worked for BB and I've pricematched before and this was not a policy. Anyway, both dvd's were in the bag and she said what do you want to do, I said, cancel the one that you cant pricematch. She canceled it, I paid for 1 dvd, she gave me the bag, my receipt and she was about to tell me about a survey, I stormed out all pissed off, left her with her mouth open and saw her roll her eyes.

Anyway, when I got home I noticed that the stupid cashier didnt take the dvd out of the bag, so I got a free dvd, only got charged for 1. So instead of paying a little under cost, I ended up getting it for free.

awesome congrats...i dont even feel like goin to that bb anymore...i ended up going to compusa today and got my hardrive...im currently posting this from my new amd 64 system!!!!!! im so happy right now

It's funny how he said that the store is going to lose $45 bucks or something like that for giving it to you for $100. The store actually loses $100 because now you can take your money elsewhere. That hard drives is eventually going to be worthless as time goes on so they should take your money and make a sale. That's why screw best buy.

Why would that be a problem? The receipt would only have the game he paid for listed on it if the cashier took off the other one.

I'm just surprised the person at the door that checks receipts didn't catch it.

The cashier could be rolling her eyes because he stormed off before she could remove the unpaid for DVD even though he left thinking she already did.

If he paid with a credit card or swiped his Reward Zone card then they'd have his name and address. They could either charge him for the DVD he took or, worse yet, file a police report for theft and have the cops knock on his door.
