NYC Hotel Deals?

rawtalent

CAGiversary!
Other than the usual e.g. travelocity, expedia, orbitz, etc....can anyone recommend a good hotel deal for New York (around late May)? I know a lot of CAGers are from the NYC, so a little help?

TIA

www.site59.com is good for last minute deals. Otherwise I've used the other places youve mentioned to get a room in the city when i stay there. You can normally find a pretty good deal on their sites. If you need help deciding what area you want to stay at, just let me know, I'll help as much as i can

If I could get more specifics on where in the city you needed to be, I probably could give you a little help as well.

Personally, I would say check out the Marriot Courtyard and the Doubletree in the Newport section of Jersey City, they're both nice hotels, and a quick train ride on the PATH into Manhattan.

Check out the Ramada Inn East Side and use Expedia to book it...

I've seen rates under $100 a night there and the location is great, just a few blocks away from the Empire State Building.

Its not a 4 star hotel or anything, but you can't beat the price.

Thx guys....I'm a newbie to NYC, so I don't know ANYTHING about what the city is like.
Knowing that, what can you guys recommend as far as what area of the city to stay in?

CheapyD, BigDirty, Ericnmel99, etc...what would you recommend for someone visiting for the first time?

BTW, I've got to try out this East Coast pizza I always hear about, what's the spot to go?

If you're feeling very touristy, take a Grey Line tour of the city, it's a good way to do the sightseeing in a day. Also trips to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island can be done.

If you got youngsters with you, the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is a great place to go, a hands on science museum, with an IMAX in it.

If you enjoy baseball at all, Yankee Stadium is a must go to, but don't get the bleacher seats, since they restrict your access to the stadium. Shea Stadium is home to the Mets and is out in Queens, and I only suggest it if you really want to see that stadium as well. (Side note, don't root for opposing teams there)

If you feel the need to go to a Broadway show, check out TKTS in Times Square for the cheap-ass tickets.

As far as cuisine is concerned, Grays Pappaya on either 8th St at 6th Ave or 38th St at 8th Ave, it's quite possibly the greatest hot dog you will ever eat, and very good drinks as well (get a juice based drink and not a soda)

I would offer space at my house, or rather my moms, but we're out in the suburbs. It's just one quick train ride to manhatten though. If you've got a bit of money to burn, there are a bunch of novelty places you can go to eat: Jekyl and Hydes, the WWE restaurant. Not in Manhatten, but stop by Katz's deli in Brooklyn(If I remember correctly, havent been in years) And for a bit of shameless self promotion, stop by the Bowery Bar (It's owned by my cousin) It's not really cheap though.

And just a word of advice. After 10'oclock don't go down too many dark alleys and leave most of your money in your hotel room. And don't buy a hotdog from a stand for more than 1 buck, otherwise they're ripping you off. While in NY, check out the Museum of Natural History, and any other art galleries you can think of. And don't forget the Poke Center in Times Square.

I'm heading out that way August-ish, so all this info is helping me as well.

so far there are 3 places we have to stop (me and my GF are driving): defenders store, Midtown Comics, Jay and silent Bobs secret stash.

Basically we are going to try and stay as close to NY, NY as possible and enjoy my first vacation in about 4 years. (mmm...relaxing)

Is that place always crowded? I saw the line 2 weeks ago and an hour before the ticket sales even started there must have been a few hurdred people in line!

Priceline works great in NYC. I got a night at the New York Hilton once for like $80. Usually costs upwards of $200.

I'm in the city, so feel free to ask any questions via PM when you get here.

:)

I would stay in Midtown...that way your in the middle of everything. The place CheapyD said sounds good, or just do a search on those different sites for a place in Midtown Manhattan. My reccomendation is to stay out of New Jersey though...it kind of smells funny.

If you are a college student with ID you can get even cheaper tickets at the door in the morning. My wife landed Movin' Out tickets for us... 3rd row for only $30 each. :)

Relaxing in Manhattan! :) I just got back from a week there and had a blast... stopped in Defender's store... cool place but it was a little hard to find. I'm a person who likes to do a lot on vacation so I had a blast... although I did miss seeing Courtney Love's Tits.... my wife saw them at the Letterman show... unfortuantely I was watching Dave to see what he was up to when she flashed the audience from off stage... :)

Oh, and I did not get any relaxing in until I got home...

Relaxing means no magerial duties, no calls from parents, no cals from employees, ITS NOT MICHIGAN, its not Ohio, its somewhere ive never been.

I can sit on my ass at home and be stressed, id rather be in another state in traffic

Cool...this is why I love this site - thx for all the great advice guys!!
I saw a place called Carnegie's Deli on the Food Network....is it as good as it looks?

It was closed for health violations.

Check out www.craigslist.com - select NYC, they have generally everything that is going on.

Make dinner reservations BEFORE you get there, unless you want to eat at the Olive Garden. If you have an idea what part of the city you are staying in I can recommend a few if you give me an ide of your budget.

The museums are excellent, central park is free. Don't be an ass and come to the WTC site and take a picture with yourself in it.

Empire state building is great, but there generally are longer lines.

Avoid mid-town. Do something ethnic that you can't do where you normally live.

Go see the stock exchange. In fact, go to 40 Wall St, get a cup of Texas Chili from Daisy May's - he is a street vendor, totally awesome for $6. Well worth it.

Did Carnegie Deli close recently or was that a while ago and they reopened? I was there 2 weeks ago and the food was good (sandwiches were huge!) but I didn't like how tight the restaurant was. Everyone was sitting so close to each other.

It was closed for a day or two for some health code violations. There actually was a proposal to require resturants to have to post what the Board of Health found or didn't find, but it died.

I am sure its fine now. But anytime I can drop the "your restuarant was closed due to health violations" bomb," I try. :p

The health code violations were for food that wesnt hot enough or cold enough. They said that the Macaroni salad wasnt as cold as its supposed to be. And some of the hot foods were below the standard hot food temp.

Oh yeah, and since this is a cheapass site... i have to mention Grey Papaya's. Greatest cheapest hot dog in the city at $.75 a pop or get two dogs and a drink for $2.45. THeres a couple of locations the one i go to is on 72nd and Broadway i believe.

You are correct - quite close to where I live. It is under rennovation but still open 24/7.

Gamestop is like 12 blocks to the north.

Which reminds me - if you are in the area you have to stop at H&H Bagels, the greatest bagels in the world, on Broadway.

Papaya King > Grey Papaya's

Oh yeah! I trekked down to Papaya's about 20 blocks for lunch one day and I can definitely say it was worth it. THey got cheapass hot dogs and fruit shakes there, best in the city.

What's the best choice for transportation? I know most people take public transit. Would the subway be best? A cab?
What about the soup nazi? Is that place still around or have I been watching too much Seinfeld?

It depends. Cabs are necessary some times, like if you have a dinner reservation and are running late.

Alternatively buying a metro card and subway map is much less expensive. The worst that happens is you get onto the right subway line going the wrong way, then you get off and walk over to the other side of the station.

Its a pretty simple set-up even if you have never taken the subway before. Going cross town is more difficult than going up and downtown merely because there are fewer places to cross over.

Soup Nazi? Not a clue if he is still in business.

CTL

Cab is probably the way to go as the bus and subway now cost $2 a person.

Cabs are still relatively cheap as you will seldom pay more than $10 for a ride unless you are travelling way across town.
