Obama Plagiarism In Speech

Meh. This is the same as a comedian coming up with an easily thought of joke, then being accused of "stealing" it from some comedian who thought of it "first". A non-story, really.
 
I really don't think this is a big deal. He just borrowed some phrases from one of his buddies... maybe a little awkward, but doesn't hurt him in my eyes. It's not like politicians write their own speeches.

Hillary stole her "ready to lead on day one" line from Chris Dodd. Biden got in trouble for plagiarism as well. So this is nothing new (although not saying it is right). But you should be aware that few if any politicians write their own speeches nowadays anyway.
 
He should have given credit, but I'm not that concerned about it. Hell, of all the crimes a president could commit, plagiarism is the least of them.
 
It's hardly plagiarism if the original writer asks Obama to use it in his speeches. The original writer is Gov. Deval Patrick, who said the following about this:

"Senator Obama and I are long-time friends and allies. We often share ideas about politics, policy and language," Patrick said in the statement. "The argument in question, on the value of words in the public square, is one about which he and I have spoken frequently before. Given the recent attacks from Senator Clinton, I applaud him responding in just the way he did."

I really don't know what they expect out of campaign speaches, oral footnotes or parenthetical cites? C'mon. It does look like Hil's gettin desperate.

Obama is pulling away, it must be a frustrating thing to watch.

This was a non-story from the get-go. Colleagues knowingly using phrases in each other's speeches is not plagiarism. Should he maybe have interjected with, "as my friend Deval Patrick has said..."? Sure. But failing to do so does not equal plagiarism and calling it such frankly minimizes the serious offense that real plagiarism engenders.

It's especially disingenuous of Hillary to play that game, given what she's borrowed during this campaign alone. ABC News, in reporting the story, pointed out her shameless lift of John Edwards' line about "if we can figure out when someone's walking into a Blockbuster, we can track people coming into the United States."

Poor Hillary. I was feeling sorry for her, but at this point I wish she'd just crawl into the hole she continues to dig for herself.

Y'know Tybee, I still really like Hillary and know that many women all over the world would love for her to win. I actually like that she is tied to Bill and thought he was a great leader. I don't aggrandize him as the liberal messiah but I seriously thought he did a good job, he really gave it her a good shot and left a big mark on the presidency blue dress.

he he, that was fun. Seriously though, Obama is taking the lead. I am still undecided b/w him and her but feel like I'm leaning towards him. All this bullshit about the president needign to be more than a good speaker is failing so bad as a campaign strategy that I hope McCain sticks with it. If so, I bet he'll (Obama) win.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. If Hillary, by some miracle (or classic Clintonian bullying), still pulls down the nomination, I'll most likely vote for her. But I won't feel nearly as good about it.
