On the fence about getting a PS3

With Gamecrazy's xbox/ps2 for a PS3 trade-in deal I have the opportunity to make space in my house, get a PS3 for around 300, and get more for trading in said systems than I'd be likely to normally. However, I'm at a loss for PS3 games to compel me to take the plunge.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword and Killzone2 are the only must-haves I can think of. MGS4 and FFXIII don't interest me. Can you fine people fill me in on present and future worthwhile PS3 games? (I already have a 360, so there's no need to list multiplatform titles.)

Many thanks for your help.:)

Umm, do you have an HDTV? Blu-Ray player, upconverting DVD player. As for games, nothing is THAT exciting yet.

Resistance is a decent FPS. Motorstorm seems to be an average racer at best.

Well, other games that I'm looking forward to, planning on buying, or already own are:

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Warhawk
Resistance: Fall of Man
Lair (Recieved questionable gossip/reviews and was pushed back.)
Folklore (An Action RPG)
Eye of Judgement (Not normally into these things but looked cool and I'm an idiot for thinking it does)
LittleBigPlanet ("Full" release is next year with a demo/beta'ish release this year)
Haze (I need to look into this more personally before I make a choice on it)

That's about it for me currently and of course I may or may not get the ones I listed in the end, depending.

If your into multiplayer online games, Warhawk is coming out in a week and I think it looks like alot of fun.

The package itself (PS3) is pretty good:

* wireless controllers
* virtual memory cards
* Blu-Ray / DVD Player
* plays PS/PS2/PS3 games
* PSN Store (buying downloadable games / demos / add-ons)

For current PS3 games, well, it's kind of lacking. We're all hoping that it picks up.

If you add up everything above you're getting a pretty good setup at a reasonable price. If you're not interested in Blu-Ray then it takes a good chunk of that away.

The current (60GB) PS3s still have the PS2 chip in them so, if you're thinking ab out getting one and using it for backwards compatibility, then now is a good time. The future versions (80GB and going forward) will have software emulation. That makes me nervous for compatibility although there have been others here who have welcomed it.

If you enjoy sports, MLB The Show is the best baseball video game to be released in a long long time, if not not ever. This game alone justified the purchase of my PS3. That along with the blu ray player of course.

Don't forget about the release of Unchartered, in a couple months maybe? This game has the potential to be great.

Then, you have Konami's soccer game, Pro Evo and also Hot Shots Golf.

Gotta be patient if you're picking up a PS3.
Motorstorm seems to be an average racer at best.
I gotta disagree. Motorstorm is one of the reasons I ordered my PS3. The game is gorgeous, tons of fun, and the online aspect of it (at least from the time I spent with it) is amazing.

Personally, I'm really excited about Home. It may not count as a 'game', per se, however from the demonstration I saw at GDC it seems that I may log more hours into it than any other game coming out any time soon (excluding Mass Effect :D). Plus, it's free, which rules.

Oh, and LittleBigPlanet shall be fantastic, I have no doubt.

Heh, forgot about White Knight Story and Uncharted. Probably a couple others I'm forgetting off the top of my head too.

just get one.. because you're going to enjoy it. We've played all the games, but you still have a lot of PS3 games to play because you never had any. The ps3 has some good games coming down the pipe. But overall, its going to be the focal point of your entertainment setup.

LBP is gonna suck its not even a real game....its one of those damn Animal Crossing, Viva Pinata, the Sims type of crap.

Anyway, I'd wait til next year to get a PS3. By then there will be a lot of great games out and other stuff like Motor Storm & Resistance will be cheap by then.

If you don't have an HDTV yet buy the HD first ;) It makes all the difference when playing PS3 & 360.

are u getting a new ps3? If so u can also get the 5 free blueray dvds.
The ps3 games out now aren't that impressive, but next year and the year after games will start coming out that will really show the power the ps3 has. Sony has also annouched that the graphics on ps3 can be improved by 30-40% by later updates.

If you're on the fence, I suggest staying there at least until the coming holiday season. You have a 360, that's more than enough to hold you over until the PS3 gets a better, more solid lineup.

Go to a sony style store (or just online) and apply for the Sony Credit Card, you get $150 off your first order of $300 or more.
LBP is gonna suck its not even a real game....its one of those damn Animal Crossing, Viva Pinata, the Sims type of crap.
No it's not.

And OP, I'd say get one. There is going to be a good amount of exclusive coming out for it this year so I'd recommend it.

And if you're interested in Unreal Tournament 3, the PS3 version is looking to be the console version to have for a few reasons.

I'd stay away unless you want a Blu-Ray player.

At least for now, when LBP and MGS4 are actually released, my tune will more than likely change, but the 360s holiday lineup is more than enough to keep you busy until those two games are released.

i'd say trade it in and then sell your ps3 on ebay. Get an upconvert dvd player for 50 bucks and a gamecube with some games for 50 bucks to tide you over for another year until ps3 goes down to 300 bucks.

If your 360 still works this holiday season. :bomb:

I only have one game for my ps3 that isn't on the xbox 360, so the ps3 has games, but we know the 360 has more. Its just a matter of what you want to do. The PS3 is my number one system, and the 360 is a back up. I'm buying exclusives only for the 360, and all shared games will be played via PS3. But for you it could be the opposite, or you could use the 360 as a backup. The PS3 is getting some good games... exclusives... and Soon. Right now is a good time to buy the PS3 because you aren't JUST getting the system, you do get 5 free blu ray movies, and its possible to get 150 off... w/ the sony style card.
I'd stay away unless you want a Blu-Ray player.
Troll Alert. Get out now.

Get a PS3, it's definitely worth it. It's definitely the best next generation console out with some awesome games now, and plenty of awesome games in the future.

I see no reason for concern with the PS3 at this point. The new HDMI/cooler running 360s make much better sense for the gamer.

Although if you're in it for blu-ray you can't argue with PS3. If you don't see yourself caring about blu-ray, there's no reason to buy a PS3. That's not trolling, it's my opinion, and if the OP didn't want to hear negative opinions on PS3, he would have said "convince me to buy a PS3" not "I'm on the fence, what do you guys think"

Also, still no WiFi in the 360, and you gotta buy the adapter (along with paying $50 a year to play online).

I rarely use my blu-ray player on my PS3, yet I play my PS3 everyday because it has awesome games I like to play. Sony makes by far the best first party games and you'll only find them on PS3.

Why you sticking up for the 360, when you sold yours anyway. You just don't care about owning a next generation console in general.

Wait until more games come out. I bought a ps3 for the low and i play it maybe twice a week. You have a xbox 360. Bioshock comes out this week Stranglehold next week. You can hold out until better games come out.

why hold out... its better to buy now, than try to buy a 400/600 dollar console WITH GAMES... there's games on the PS3 of course, and there's one thing that everyone agrees on, there are definitely some Games coming soon.. and not just games but good games.

Stop being such a fanboy. Zoo already had and got rid of his PS3. He was simply stating his opinion on the system.

I like the PS3 a lot so far, but damn stop talking it up like it is the end all be all. There are two frikken games out for the system right now worth owning.

Incorrect, I see more than two (Resistance, Ridge Racer 7 (Best RR ever), Formula One CE, and MotorStorm are just a few). Heck, there's more than two good downloads worth it, where one blows away everything on 360 (Tekken 5 DR sure does). Plus, most all the good 360 games are multi-platform with PS3/PS2, which can be played on PS3. I could say there are no more than three 360 games worth owning back at you. That's more than two good games. If someone has their rose colored 360 glasses on, they'll assume every game on 360 is exclusive, while every game on PS3 that's on 360 cannot be good.

Why buy now and not have anything to play. I say wait till jan. you have a 360 and its gonna have the most games available this holiday season. Use that money you where going to spend and buy some more games for you 360.
Imo you could get a ps3 and and two games right now or you could buy 4 new games for your xbox 360. Its your choice.

OP,

If you want some advice, when wading through a flamewar/shitstorm, trying to find valid info: only read posts by people who have XBL tag, _and_ a PSN tag. Assumpting that those people actually own both systems, that should give you a more objective opinion. That is what I do.

The irony here is that I only have a PSN account listed, so you may not want to listen to me :whistle2:# .
(I was almost exclusively Xbox last gen. If you care, the reason I switched was b/c both systems are similar spec gaming wise, and I didn't want to pay a subscription fee for XBL, l plus I got a deal on a PS3 that made it same price as a 360.)

I'd generally say, "Yeah, that's good advice," but in the PS3 camp you're not really getting a whole lot of, "Buy it for the games!"

You're either getting:
* Buy it and hope
* Hold off and wait

Surprisingly absent of the fanboy nonsense.

I could almost say the same thing about the Wii but there are a few games out now that I could see folks buying and some other promising titles on the way. The Wii is great for VC, though.

Sony is lacking in it's PSN Store. It's like they're selling a whole lotta nothin'.

I've had more fun with Super Stardust HD, Calling All Cars, and Tekken 5: DR compared to the downloads on any other console (Only XBLA game that I like just as much as those is Bomberman Live, and yes I've played most all of them). Also, I'm having a lot of fun with GT HD (It's short, but still cool), Blast Factor, Lemmings, flOw, Go! Puzzle (high underrated IMO), and Piyotama. Most of the games are pretty original and I rather have that then roms I can get for free on my PC (or overpriced Arcade games that are already in previous classical compilations for a lot less).

It never ends. $270 will get you an HDMI 360 with wireless controller, 5 arcade games(Including the amazing Pac Man CE), and a memory card, and allow you to play Bioshock, Halo 3, and Mass Effect. (Not to mention the better versions of Madden and many other 3rd party games)

Officially no reason to spend $600 on a PS3 this holiday. You can get a 360, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Halo 3 (at retail price, which none of us pay ;) and still be $50 under (that's enough to get a live subscription and a maybe a little more if you find a good deal) the MINIMUM price of entry for PS3 ($500) if you can even find the 60GB models anymore.

We're CAGs. Look to where you're getting the most value. I see absolutely no reason why someone would own one without the view of buying a Blu-Ray player and getting a PS3 as a bonus.

I have both the 360 and ps3 and I think for your money the ps3 has the better offer.

500 for:

Blueray player
Dvd upconverter
HDMI 1.3
PS1/PS2/PS3 game system
Wireless built-in
60GB harddrive (which you can replace with a different if u wish)
Free online play over PSN
PSN games like (Super Star Dust, Tekken, and coming soon Everyday Shooter)
Great games like Killzone 2, MGS 4, FFXIII, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, and Socom to look forward to

I would say I do play my 360 more, since as of right now the games out do give the game more options in what they want to play, but the ps3 is still an awesome system to own.

Also, in case you didn't know, that bundle IS limited edition. You didn't factor in buying a WiFi adapter for the 360, which you need if your router is a distance from a TV, and that happens to be $100. And even if you get some memory card with the core (not confirmed yet for the U.S., that picture was ONLY Europe because if you notice, the money sign is in Euros). Oh course you gotta pay for XBL every year. You gotta buy plug and charge kits for $20 to charge the controllers, or be prepared to change the batteries every week wasting more $$$. And with the core, you STILL can't download demos and such. If you go with a premium, 20GB is not enough space. 120GB is enough space, but you gotta pay $180 for it. And if you ever want to watch HD movies, you gotta pay another $180 to play movies on a soon to be dead movie format.

We're CAGs. Look to where you're getting the most value. I see absolutely no reason why someone would own one without the view of buying a Blu-Ray player and getting a PS3 as a bonus.
It's because you're a freaking Wii60 fanboy whose too blind to see PS3 as a worthy investment.

You don't own a PS3, so you CAN'T judge it. I knew plenty of 360/Wii Fanboys who bashed PS3 a lot. I could say that when the majority of them got a PS3, they realized why some PS3 owners really like them and stopped saying it wasn't worth it to own one. I'll admit, not all them use it as their main console and some don't play it as much as their 360. What I am trying to say is that their attitude changes when they get one. That's why I feel those who do NOT own a PS3 shouldn't be talking in this thread, and that's what makes me upset. This is like someone saying Killzone 2 has really bad controls and is not worth $60, when no one has ever played the game. So in all reality jer, you don't know if a PS3 is really worth it, because you don't own one or really played it. Although, whether you're ready to buy it is a different story. I'm surprising your talking so big about the 360 because you don't own that either anymore. I won't mention if a Wii is worth it or not to buy one because I don't own one, never played one, so I can't judge it.

Hey, I mean....im not paying for my PS3 that gets here tomorow, but I guarantee you Im REALLY looking forward to it.

The 360's games are soo tempting and all, but this is the 2nd 360 i have to send in. Plus when the customer service for MICROSOFT has its computers go down and tell you on the phone "thats life" you get very, very pissed.

IMO, at this moment right now, PS3>Xbox 360. So get it at a good deal and you will be happy (especially down the line)

The PS3 is not a worthy investment for me. Thus why I don't own one. I don't have to buy something to determine if it's a worthy investment. It goes without saying that I'd be proper fucked if I invested $600 in order to find out it wasn't worth $600.

Every PS3 arguement hinges on the assumption that you want wi-fi, blu-ray, and all that other crap.

If you want to play Bioshock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Madden, Call of Duty 4, Stranglehold, Eternal Sonata, or Blue Dragon this holiday, 360 is the choice. If I want to watch blu-ray movies and connect to a wi-fi connection, maybe PS3 is the choice.

PS3 is not the choice for someone looking just to play games. The price of entry is much lower for those looking to play games. It's all fine and dandy that the PS3 has all that shit in it. But I don't want it. At any price. Unless that price is under or around $300.

As for reliability issues, yes, it's been a problem. The new HDMI premiums/cores have the new boards that were made in response to overheating problems. I think the point is moot anyway by the fact that Microsoft repairs every system for free.

And I sold my 360 because a price drop was imminent and I was in need of money during a time when I wasn't using it.

Wait...what? Since when was CoD4 and Stranglehold not coming out on PS3?

And yes, 360 does have it's exclusives this year, but so does the PS3. Where 360 has Eternal Sonata, Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Bioshock from your list, PS3 has LAIR, Ratchet, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Warhawk, Folklore, and more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

And if you want to be playing Haze this holiday season you need a PS3.

PS3 is VERY capable if you want it for just games. I bought it for just games and it has been serving me well. Not only can I play PS3 games coming out, I can play all my PS2 and PS1 games on it too. I recently got an HDTV and that makes the PS3 that much better.

My point being that for someone looking to play those or any multi platform 3rd party games, 360 allows you to do that for almost half the price, without unnecessary features to playing the actual game.

I'm arguing that the decision to buy PS3 starts with Blu-Ray, followed by games. If you don't want blu-ray, you don't want a PS3, and the OP is asking if he wants a PS3.

PS3 and the 360 have very different pros and cons.

If one suits your tastes more than the others, get that system.

There is no right or wrong choice that suits everyone, it's a personal decision.

It's that simple.

I don't see why it's so hard to understand that the blu-ray drive is a huge negative for some people, and a huge positive for some people. That's all I'm trying to say.
My point being that for someone looking to play those or any multi platform 3rd party games, 360 allows you to do that for almost half the price, without unnecessary features to playing the actual game.

Why do you assume he wants 360 exclusives and not PS3 exlusives? If you really wanted to prove an unbiased point then you'd at least list some of the games that the PS3 is getting this holiday season. Just because you don't like PS3 exclusives doesn't mean that someone else would value blu-ray more than those games.

I'm getting a PS3 once my voucher comes from best buy because I've had two 360's die on me in the same year. I figure I could get another 360 or a Blu-ray player for $100 more and have a guarantee that I could play MGS4 day 1. Sony is all about the exclusives it just takes them awhile to get their engines started. If you like Halo then get a 360. I'd bet dollars to donuts that Bioshock doesn't remain exclusive. If you want MGS4 and FFXIII (not my cup of tea) then get a PS3. Remember how shitty the 360's lineup was this time last year? There was oblivion and very recently dead rising. It just takes Sony a little bit. Buy now if you want Ratchet or any other games coming out this year or save your money for when the exclusives you want come out.
I'd stay away unless you want a Blu-Ray player right now.
Agreed, with minor edit.

If you want to get in on the 5 free blu-ray deal, you still have a little bit of time left, otherwise, the game pickings are slim.

I own a PS3, but I have yet to even hook the thing up yet since my 1080p TV is still pending. I have been slowly getting blu-ray movies and just picked up Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Here's what I'm looking forward to (that I can think of) beyond that, game-wise:

Stranglehold (Hardboiled on BluRay!)
MGS4
Gran Turismo 5
Killzone 2
Ratchet & Clank ToD
Little Big Planet
Heavenly Sword
Folklore
Time Crisis 4

The rest I'm going to pick up for 360, because in a cross-platform battle, XBL and Achievements/Gamerscore will win out almost every time unless the game's technical performance is somehow dramatically better on PS3.
