Online gaming: anyone NOT interested?

Fatesealer

CAGiversary!
Nowadays you can't say a game's features without the want for it to be online. I hope I'm not the lone one but I really don't get excited if it's online enabled... I mean, it's cool but not a life or death buy it reason.

xbox live has spoiled me..it is the best

and what do you mean free? all xbox online games are free except pso. just buy the starter kit

I like online gaming, but I don't like to pay to play with the exception of xbox live.

I just don't have enough free time to play long online games and afford to pay the monthly fee for something I won't be spending enough time or effort on it to actually be worth while.

Plus I'm completely against monthly fees to play a single game, and I stick by my guns by refusing to buy or play any of those games :)

Not paying $50 a year.

xbox live = shizzle, u pay $50 for ayear, but it entitles u to every game that has the live feature enabled, and its usually pick up and go..its not like an mmorpg which is at least $13 a month, and u have 2 keep playing for hours 2 really enjoy it

i like online games (re:eek:utbreak) but online as a gimmick is just that.

its nice to play friends, or people you know from the web. but other than counter strike, i rarley play anything online...

For consoles I really dont see the point... When ever online play is in a game they start adding accesories to further emulate PCs... Keyboards, mice, harddrives... Ive already got a $2000 PC... why shell out extra to get a console version of peripherals I already have?

Wait. You're telling me that even though I pay $300 for the system, $50 for the game, and $45 a month for internet access, that's not enough? I'm sorry but that's enough of my money to allow me to go online and play your damn game free of charge. It's absolultey ridiculous to ask me to pay a monthly, or even yearly, fee to play a game, THAT I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR, simply to be able to play it online.

I understand that allowing gamers to play online costs a company money, but asking me to pay a large chunk of money for the game, then pay more money to be able to play it, is absolutely, completely, shaq-fued up. I'll sell you this Tetris game for $60 dollars, but then every time you want to play it you have to give me an additional dollar. If i wanted to throw my money away on something so retarded, I'd go hang out at an arcade. Then i'd be really cool!

Sony doesn't charge its owners extra money to be able to play PS2 games online, so why does Micrsoft? Because they can, and because it'll make them even more money. ](*,)

EDIT: I can spell, no really!

i love playing online and im on 56k

i have all the games for Steam

i used to play ps2 online I was so good at tribes aerial assault awesome game. i was even in a clan on Tribesaa.com

i would love to get xbox live but i dont have broadband

your not alone, I really don't find online gaming to be all that great. Xbox Live is pretty boring. There are next to no games I care about on it. I mean yeppy I get to play Halo2 Online.. Oh wait I've been playing Online FPS sinces Quake 2 and I played Halo1 online on the PC over a year ago. -_-
and Fighting games and Raceing games just don't have the same feel as being in the same room with people.

I have yet to play a console online game that I actually enjoyed alot and felt that online play made it a great game.

Maybe Online is more fun when you haven't been playing online for many years or you don't get together with your friends once a week.

I just see what the big deal is and I hope the whole Online gaming fad ends soon. I'm getting so sick of hearing people say that Online games is a HUGE deal. cause it isn't.
Exactly, online gaming can't replace having your buddies over.
Amen to that! And "friends" online? Yeah right. Try 12 year olds that think it's cool to cuss and fat, loney, gross, middle-aged men (i still have nightmares)!

Ive never actually played a console game online. And have only played a PC game online once.

Id rather have a bunch of friends over.

Come on man, this is CAG, you really think we paid 50 bucks ? I know I didn't. But I still have XBL.
And "friends" online? Yeah right.
What's wrong with that? I've played with many people online that I've never actually met, and had just as good a time as I do with my actual "friends."

I used to play online games, especially FPSs, quite regularly for several years. But in the end, gaming with anonymous strangers who pay no attention to the rules of the game while insulting your sexuality really gets pretty tiresome. If I'm gonna do that, it might as well be with my friends in front of a TV. So yeah, I really care nothing for the online portion of a console game, and most PC games I'd consider buying today I feel the same way.

Your joking right?

Single player games are a must, but I need online gaming to keep me interested. When I go back to school and I'm working 40 hours a week to boot, Online will be a savior. I won't have time to beat a 80 hour rpg, but a hour or two a day in Halo 2 online will save the day.

No Online isn't everything, but it certainly keeps games longer lasting, and is freedom to the working class (atleast for me).

It's not like me and my friends have the same days off and can spend hours over eachothers houses playing games.

Live has been a savior, and the reason I own a XBox. I hope online gaming continues to grow over the years, and MS will continue to improve the Live community, because It will be the reason I own a XBox 2.

If you look at sales figures, vast majority of console owners don't play online games on their consoles.

This is a little dated but I doubt much has changed...

Quoted From http://www.gamesarefun.com/gamesdb/editorial.php?editorialid=5

With the newest numbers for Xbox Live, 5.4% of the Xboxes shipped are connected to it. Xbox Live sales flat lined until Microsoft started giving it away with each Xbox. From late April until December, Microsoft could not say any number higher than their previously stated 'around 500,000 subscribers.' Now they get to say 'around 750,000.' Good thing it sells so well, eh? Eight months of little to no discernible sales, then a rush when they give the online playing ability away? And the “rush” wasn't even near what Microsoft would have liked.

I'm wondering how many people will keep their trial Xbox Live subscriptions for a while, now that Halo 2, which I'm sure is the title many of those new subscribers were looking forward to, has had its release date set as "Fall 2004"; which is far later than the hoped March or April release Xbox owners, including myself, hoped/thought would come (well, I predict November, myself, but many other Xbox owners hoped for or genuinely beleived March or April as a release date). My bet is that most of the new subscribers, especially the free two-month ones, cancel until the release of Halo 2. It'll be interesting to see if Microsoft can make their projected 1 million Xbox Live subscribers by June, especially since the game that would have ensured that number isn't due out until months after June.

And only 2.9% of the PS2s out there are connected to the Internet according to Sony. And the largest games for Sony's online gaming? Madden and SOCOM; all the other online games tend to get little traffic, even the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, which were the first to go online on the PS2.

I'd have to say I'm not all that interested.

I've been paying $5.99 a month for an XBOX live subscription and I haven't used it since November, during the two times I felt compelled to play Halo 2.

I think I may cancel my subscription VERY soon.....

I've gotta admit, I just enjoy the single player modes to games more. I'm not that thrilled with online gaming. Unless it's a co-op game, it's just not worth it... It used to be fun on the PC (Doom, Quake, etc.), but I just find it boring these days...

Case in point, I went over to my friend's house, and he had Halo 2 going on Xbox Live. He set me up with a profile and got us going on some team games... About 20 minutes later, I had him sign me out, and I read a book until he was done playing. I look forward to the day Halo 2 hits $20 bucks so I don't feel like I'm wasting my money.

For the people that complain about paying for online games...

You have a point about games like World of Warcraft, where its $10-$20 a month for a single game. But Xbox Live is very reasonably priced, at full retail price its $4 bucks a month. A kit can be easily had for $35, which is less than $3 a month. That is not very signifigant at all.

I love Xbox Live and play it all the time. Many, many games would be very, very shallow if not for online play.

Umm, you don't think that Halo 2 and Mechassault 2, among the other recent great additions to Xbox Live, might drive sales?

Think about how many more live games there are since February 04.

Online play is conceptually a positive thing but it doesn't offer much to me individually. I've never cared much for team sports or activities that emulate their structure like CTF matches in FPS games. The stuff that drives online the most is the stuff I'm least likely to want in a game.

If there were a LOT of downloadable content for single player modes I might subscribe to Xbox Live or use my PS2 Network Adapter for something more than HDLoader. But the bulk of it is aimed at the multi-player gamers who drive that market, naturally enough.

The one category that might really get me interested is the MMORPGs, espceially since you can seamlessly go from single player to multi-player activity and vice versa at will. The problem for me is that I sometimes don't get in the mood to play any console games for weeks at a time. MMORPGs require to much of a commitment for me to get the value from subscribing.

I'm wondering about the demographics and game preferences of the people who say that they aren't that into online gaming. Are you guys in high school, college, or still living at home? Do you guys list RPGs as your favorite kind of game?

I work long hours as an attorney and am married. My friends are scattered all over the country. I like sports games, primarily. Online gaming on my PS2 has been a godsend! As a matter of fact, I will no longer buy a game without an online mode unless it is from the GTA series. Gran Turismo 4? No thanks.

Other than GTA, I play almost exclusively online. I only have a few hours a week to play, and playing online against actual human opponents (some of whom are your friends, and who you can catch up with through the headset) trumps playing the moronic and predictable CPU AI over and over again!

Now that I've been online, I'll never to back to primarily playing offline. I don't even care about franchise mode in my sports games anymore, since I'd rather play online anyway.

My 2 cents.

Normal people like online gaming.

Nintendo fanboys do not mike online gaming.

Need to make it any easier for anyone?

Although I do enjoy online gaming on my Xbox, I'll take a solid single player experience over online play anyday.
I find that its easier to get lost(in a good way) in a great single player game, like a Zelda or a RE4, this of course is just my opinion

I disagree David. I'm definitely not a Nintendo fanboy. I think its highly overrated. Granted, my online gaming personally is limited to playing with the Dreamcast. I enjoyed it, but the problem was, eventually the negatives overwhelm the positives. Reading comments here, I'm not sure I'm ready to jump back in. Playing Halo 2 online would be fun, but to have some stupid people in the room not playing by the rules. That just doesn't sound that fun. When online works, its great. But, when it doesn't, it isn't worth the hassel.

I don't play online all that often, but I do consider having the option a major plus. I think Xbox Live is a bargain at ~$4/month. If I have to choose between similar games, the availability of an online mode is often a tie-breaker.

i figure i already have broadband and an xbox...why not try the 2 month trial pass for XBL that comes with most games?

me while considering XBL - this games has 2months free in it...and this one has another 2 month trial pass...this one too...well there is six months of service free right there.

Holy Crap look at all the FREE 2 month trial found on CAG.com...people are sooo nice here to give them away (sometimes).

the moral of the story - there is a solution to every problem...even yours...be creative

for me it is a service i choose to pay for (well not really)...don't want it don't get it...

I wouldn't pay for online... I would rarely use it. However, I did buy a Network Adapter for like $15 back when I had a PS2 (now I have a PStwo). I enjoyed Amplitude, Twisted Metal, and THUG online :)

Seeing that most games are played competatively rather than cooperatively, I am not all that interested in online gaming. Also, I don't have a huge amount of time, and since I consider myself to be only an average skilled gamer, I can't even begin to compete on xbox live. If I didn't get a free year, I doubt I would even subscribe. I refuse to pay for mmorpgs because, again, I don't have a whole lot of time to invest. I play battlefield 1942 on a regular basis, only because there was a campaign mode versus bots that helped me learn the maps before going online.
i like online games (re:eek:utbreak) but online as a gimmick is just that.
Tell that to the millions of people who play Halo 2 everyday on Live alone, not to mention the other games on Live. If it was a gimmick it would have wore off by now. Online is a "feature" not a gimmick. And in the future I believe just about every game will have some sort of online feature.

What are you talking about? You haven't played Halo 2 so you would know that just about everyone follows the rules. They are fairly simple. Its not like custom matches the entire time. Try it for yourself and you will fall in love with Xbox Live.

I've noticed you complain a lot. What games/features of a game do you like?

I rarely play any game that isn't online enabled. Xbox live is the best thing to happen in gaming (for me). Most of my friends don't live anywhere near me and through live I can stay in touch with them. Plus, there are so many fun games and interesting people on live it is well worth the $50 per year.

Online should never be a MUST have feature for any game unless it's an MMORPG. This is the only time I'll pay to play online, as I could care less about the features offered by live. And even then The problem with MMORPGs is that if you arnt the type to get addicted to the game you eventually burn out with it and stop caring because of other things in life like single player games that actually offer a sense of accomplishment. The only thing keeping me in an MMORPG ends up being the friends I have that havent gotten tired of it yet.

With the vast majority of console games demanding broadband exclusively it's quickly eroding the ease of playing these games anyway.

Half the time I DO play them I'm usually teamed up with super dedicated power levelers with no concept of fun or lamers with no understanding of the most basic rules of the game like "try not to die". This has brought me to the realization that I can only play these games with people I know, I refuse to play with people I DON'T know out side of the games.

Anyway, I dont feel ANY game should be forced to contain an online mode as many times it's rare that the features will be used by the majority of the people buying the game, thus making people pay for features they cant use. This is commonly reffered to as "A waste."

So you're on a 56K? Try getting broadband. The games offered are better and more diverse than a MMORPG. I can't stress that enough.
I CANT get broadband.
Then I'm sorry. But really you can't judge online gaming by the fact that you can only play a small amount of games and at bad quality. If you ever get the chance to get broadband try out Live and it should change your opinion.

I feel bad for those who are just now appreciating online gaming. I been doing so for years on my PC. I was playing Network Doom since the first version. While I can see the Xbox as easily the best console online gaming...I think gamers are wasting not only their time but their money with console online gaming. You can usually buy 1 or 2 great PC games a year that will create a fix for you...but on console you need a new game every few weeks just to keep up with current trends. Warcraft, Everquest, Counter-Strike and others on a PC have been HUGE games for years and you only buy the new and latest version of that game every now and then. Counter-Strike alone has been the #1 online game for 5 years now...that's amazing. There was people still playing PSone and Dreamcast games then while CS was rocking with players. Currently CS has about 2.2 million players PER MONTH...take a look at current stats for yourself.

http://www.steampowered.com/status/game_stats.html

Xbox and other game consoles are only now on the radar...and personally I don't believe they will ever catch up. Online gaming will always be best on PC which arguably leads to the fact that PC are the best game platform.
I prefer having PC games online and console games offline... I think the console loses something when it becomes an online entity.
the console an online entity? i would say the only entity online is your gamertag/nickname. the console is an entity in your room connected to your TV. i think the ability to game online adds to the console experience rather than resulting in a loss as you suggest. if i ever feel like my conole is "losing something" then i'll sign off and disconnect from the network.

I enjoy online gaming.

Only things that's holding me back:

1. pain to hook up my network connection downstairs to the Xbox (FIXED...just bought a wirless ethernet bridge $30- should arrive today)

2. Don't want to shell out the $$ for XBL - although it rocks - I have used the 2mo trials in the past - and still have mine from Halo 2 to use

3. Don't have a ton of time to sit around and game on-line although it's a blast.

that being said....

When I do want to play online...I just turn on my XBConnect and play away (free). Otherwise, my nephews come over with their box and we duke it out and play over the internet too.

So for me...Love gaming on-line, not a deal breaker if a game doesn't have it but I like downloadable content options too; just don't have a lot of time to do it. Maybe with my bridge hooked up I'll get on-line more often.
