(Original thread title - "Suxzorz to be Microsoft - Only 6 million 360s shipped so far")

I don't think too many of us were expecting them to actually have the "10 million head start" they kept screaming about, but this is even less than I was guessing, and I'm a pessimist.

Link

It's not all bad as they are getting closer to turning a profit, and obviously November should be a pretty big month for 360 console sales with all the stuff coming out. That corporate line about "still being on course to meet our 10 million by the end of '06 goal" sounds pretty ridiculous though.

Edit - Also keep in mind the difference between "shipped" and "sold" - consoles that are only shipped can't make them any microtransaction/HD-DVD player/XBox Live Gold money.

Edit 2 - A few of the people here are hinting this is just a PS3 fanboy thread that is intended to annoy. I'd hope that most of you familiar with me here would know that is not the case. Look at the PS3 forum for christsake, half that thing is made up of bad news. There's no reason we can't discuss this without accusing people of being shills for Sony or Nintendo.

No one ever said 10 million by november except for you. Hence the article's title "Microsoft 2006 video game console target holds" It is 10 million by the year's end, which is completely doable given the looming PS3 shortage and cost difference.

Easy there, tough guy. The article was linked because it mentioned the 6 million figure. True, it doesn't mention the "10 million head start" that Microsoft (not me, sorry) has mentioned. Only someone living in a cave hasn't heard that quote before.

I'm sorry my knowledge of the topic was broader than the article I linked to. Sigh.

This is what you're looking for.
And god fucking damn, how ignorant or how much of a noob to these forums are you if you're questioning my "loyalty" to the 360? Did I say I was fucking disappointed with my purchase or that I'd rather have a PS3 or Wii? fuck no I didn't. Quit being so goddamn sensitive. Is it not allowed for me to post some slightly negative news in the proper forum?
I thought they said that whoever hits 10 mil first would win.
They said that as well. I believe it was Ballmer but others have said it too, although the exact quote I recall was something not quite as definitive...something like "history has shown that the first company to 10 million wins," which is probably close enough.

I read that "XBox 360 Uncloaked" book and despite the crappy editing it had a lot of info about the thinking that went into launching early....the head start was obviously the main point of it.

I dont think its "fanboyish", just annoying.

If they've shipped 6 million in the just-shy-of-one-year time frame, I sure don't expect them to hit 10 million by the end of 2006 (though I'll laugh my ass off if they try to pull a "we meant the FISCAL year" nonsense).

I can see them shipping about a million a month, leading to 8 million by year's end.

Shipped and sold is the difference between life and death, however. It's not controversial to say that the PS3 is out of the running for the holiday season, so let's see how many 360s and Wiis are sold through by the end of the holidays before coming to any conclusions.

In the end, it doesn't matter if MS ships 4 consoles or 4 million consoles, if nobody's buying what's on the shelves.

I do have to credit MS for not taking the Sony approach to PR, touting the number of "shipped" units as indicative of how popular the console is.

I disagree, I think they'll get pretty close. Since there will be no PS3's to find on shelves, Parents and Hardcore gamers will turn to X360 specially with all the big lineup thats coming up.

All good current and upcoming titles vs. PS3 so-so launch titles - Systems = $ for MS

Well, if that fails, whoever loses 4 billion dollars first is guaranteed 2nd place

while it would be better for msft to be a lot closer to the 10million they wanted by january, I think it is possible for them to come close to it. My guess is they hit at least 9mill before the end of the year, based on my theory of solid lineup of games and not enough units of the ps3. One thing to keep in mind, there really hasn't been a system seller for it. With the hype in gears of war, I would assume that will be the first system seller. Oblivion I guess was great, but I never heard someone say they were getting the 360 for oblivion. Ghost recon was solid, but just another in a long series of recon games. Dead Rising looks fun, but again not a system seller. Saints Row is a GTA clone. If gears of war plays 3/4ths as good as they claim they may have a legit system seller

Even if they don't hit 10mill by january 1st, they should still hit it b4 anyone else as the ps3 won't have that many units available and imo the wii will sell like hotcakes to nintendo diehards, but not gain the non gamer they are claiming the ds gets.

6 million is still a decent lead. things will be REALLY interesting next Xmas.

I think it's because of the way you worded the thread, not the content inside.

I'll try to take it more serious next time. Sometimes it's hard to keep a straight face when the website has "ass" in the title.

Besides that, I have no loyalty to Microsoft as a company and I don't get why anyone else would, they don't do anything for anyone. Same for Sony and Nintendo. I'm loyal to the 360 because I think it's the best system available and will remain so. I'd hope I wasn't hurting anyone's feelings with the thread title.

I nominate this for quote of the year. :applause:

Thanks. I changed the thread title to make us all feel like a big happy family.

I think we all need a group hug!....naa , not really. I dont think the 360 will hit 10 million either but it will see a good boost in sales this year with all the titles it has coming out. Looking forward to this and more so next christmas :).

Thanks, Dick.

Ignore.

I've been Sony bashing plenty in recent posts but it's not like Microsoft are above making grandiose statements and then spinning them at a later date.

I'm sure the person who said that would now say "Well it was more a statement about what we hoped would happen then what definitely would happen"

I think there will be a good few 360's sold over Chrimbo, especially in Europe were people may get one when theres no PS3's available. 10 million might be a stretch though.

I'm getting mixed signals from you, first you hate the tone of it, then I change it and you call me a dick. It's like a guy petting his dog and giving him a treat, then pushing him away angrily. Why won't you just love me for who I am? And nice try, but you hit "D" where the "N" should be.

Makes me wonder how close to 10 mil they'd be if the shortages hadn't been so bad for the first 3-4 months.

I don't care about what number has been shipped. No offense OP. A shipped number says look how many we can make. It matter how many have been sold.

Business wise, you want more sold then shipped in theory.

No offense taken - I don't really care what number shipped either, it was just interesting to me from a momentum/"things not working out as planned" standpoint. It's not like I enjoy Saint's Row any less because there are only 6 million 360s out there.
Business wise, you want more sold then shipped in theory.
What theory? While I agree it's important to have a strong in-store presence, they're not making money on games, microtransactions/marketplace points, XBox Live service, XBLA games, HD-DVD drives, connector cables, controllers, wireless adapters, and faceplates with the consoles sitting on the shelf.

The consoles are sold at a loss. They make it up through stuff like the above. Razors and razor blades - it's the reason Sega got out of hardware.
