Opinions on Sony's jobless exclusion

Hey CAGers,

I found this online that caught my attention about Sony's hiring condition.

Check out the article

I really think this puts them in a very bad light. I'm thinking, so they only want people who are still employed. Somewhat valid reasons given.. however, as most people know during this great recession of the past few years, most still employed persons were overloaded with more work, hours, and stress. Doing more with less in other words.

I am saying I support trying to get more unemployed people back to work. More employed people, more spending, business prospers, etc. This makes me not want to support their products. I'm going to be emailing their headquarter on this for sure.

Let me know what u guys and gals think. Peace out.

What about the other billion companies that do the same thing? They may not boldy state it but alot of companies dont really consider people who arent currently employed. Unless your walmart, mcdonalds or some other menial job but unless you have a damned impressive resume and interview very well if your unemployed you are at a great disadvantage for most jobs and chances are if you are hired its probablly because they need a warm body.

This is one of those stories that is only made for press for the sake of pointing a finger, because people love stories about things they can point their finger at and say they are bad. If you can incriminate someone, even over nothing it makes for good news because it will attract attention, especially if you can do so towards a big company, people love to read negative stuff about multi billion dollar companies.

This is a pointless story because its nothing new, its not a new practice that they are the only ones who follow and its been going on for awhile. Not to mention it has absolutely nothing to do with gaming at all. Sony does a hell of alot more than just ps3 and psp stuff, thats a small portion of their business.

What a bunch of suck. I can see the resume reason, but the rest are crap. Interviews let you know if someone can get a jump start early or not and plenty of useful high up people get fired due to bad luck or saving someone elses ass.

I'm in a position to agree and disagree.

My company hired someone last year who was looking for work because her husband was a doctor and she wanted to do something other than sit at home and be a housewife. Kudos for her motivation, but in the depths of a recession, I think it was irresponsible of my company to pass over applicants who are probably looking to put food on the table.

On the other hand, currently employed, I'm 2 years into my career and underpaid by five figures. I barely make ends meet between student loans and living expenses and will be looking for a better job before years end. Is it so wrong of me to look for a job that will reward my hard work and education to this point? Keep in mind that NO ONE is employing people just because right now, when someone leaves a job for a better one, that means a job is still open.

I have been following the job trends a bit since last year's massive layoffs. The job market is getting better, but a lot of old jobs are gone for good. People are doing more now, a lot of places trimmed the fat and really tightening everything up. From personal experiences, non-work related web sites are blocked (CAG happen to have an alternative address, shhhh), time sheets are now required, offices are ramped so that cubicles are now "open farm," office supplies are reduced to minimum, personal days are gone...

Anyhow, probably has nothing to with gaming, but it does come down to one's wallet and hence buying games.

I do agree with gargus, this practice is pretty much everywhere, not just Sony, and Sony is not just a game company. One can boycott Sony products, but buying substitute products from another company doesn't really make one's point any stronger.

Trust me, most hard working people are underpaid, undervalued, under appreciated. However, in general, higher pays come with more responsibilities. The true happiness is to find the balance (more hours at work, less hours to game or family time). Remember those co-workers sweet talk through their asses? Those days are pretty much over. You'll need skills to keep your job and that means, companies are making smart decisions only hiring the ones employed. I do feel bad for those unemployed, but i have no sympathies for those expecting the same good old days when hunting for new jobs. Remember, if a company is still standing, the people got laid off are most likely the company can survive without.

I hate working, but one got to earn a living right? To brighten up my day, i usually browse CAG at least once in the morning :)

This seems like blatant discrimination, I can't believe they can put "No Unemployed" when I can't even ask someone how old they are in an interview.

Stated or unstated, this policy is already in effect at most companies. We've already been told to be "very picky" where I work when it comes to hiring, and that's just crappy retail work. Face the facts, when a job market has so many more people looking than there are jobs available they're gonna be as choosy as possible.

Oh and current employment status is not a protected status for discrimination. Age, on the other hand, would be.

APPLY ANYWAY! If I want a job, I'm applying.. and that's it. (as long as I got some of the basic qualifications).
