Optical Audio on PS2

i use it, its ok i guess but i dont think u'll notice a difference with the regular, i think the difference is that u can listen to dvds/certain games in dolby 5.1 surround with the optic cable. im not a 100% on that though, check ur ps2 manual.

really? i guess i should've tried the ones the ps2 came with first to test if there was a difference. i never used the regular ones, their still in their little plastic wrapping.

Wait, I'm confused. Are you saying that your PS2's came with optical cables?

no, but it has the ability to use them. it sounds NUCH better if, like jimmiemac said, you have a decent setup. plus all dvds can then be in DD/DTS.

I use mine all the time to make mix MiniDiscs to my portable Sony MD recorder. My main CD player has a co-ax out, no optical, and the PS2 fills in just fine - the recordings come out great. Optical cable is cheap - like $10 or less...the end result though does depend on the quality of the D/A converter in whatever you're feeding that source to.

well, thanks for the input guys. I went to target today and bought a cable. They're on clearance for 7.78 if anyone is interested.

I agree, the sound is 'crisper'. I don't think it's dolby 5.1 cause my receiver just displays the word 'optical' and I have an old model ps2, but the signals are definitely better defined, especially the bass through the subwoofer. Worth the cost of the cable IMO.

sounds the same to me because PS2 games aren't even 5.1 enabled....good ole dolby logic 2 in digital. whoopee doooo

Finally, some one who has half a brain when it comes to electronics!

Yeah, but if you have a receiver with an optical input, more than likely it's able to interpret DD 5.1 . Everything depends on the source, whether your media is putting out a DD signal or a prologic, or std. surround, or whatever. Like sonokyo said, most PS2 games aren't even outputting more than a DPL signal. Anyway, the audio is slightly clearer. About the same as going from s-video to component, IMO.
