Organizing media

Now that the PS3 price drop has finally come and the AppleTV didn't see any sort of an update at the recent Apple event, I think I'm ready to move back to a PS3 as a media hub. I know that there are some decent solutions for streaming media out there but I'd prefer not to have to have my computer running at all times that I want to playing back something.

I've got a huge iTunes library full of CDs and videos. I'd like to move them over to the PS3. I'm using a USB hard drive so the quantity shouldn't be a problem. My question is: how do I best organize my media on the PS3? All my music is tagged with ID3 tags so it shows up properly in iTunes. My videos are tagged according to Show/Season/Episode Number, with the episode name as the file name. I've got BSG ripped on my computer and I want it on the PS3, sorted by episode number. Is this possible without manually renaming each file?

If you have them on the media server, you could just download them from the server to save you time. The PS3 can be a bit picky on video downloaded that way and not recognize it as the full video, but the music should be fine. Just check the size first and copy the rejects over by hand and you should be fine.

I don't know about how well tags are carried over, but you can just sort them by whatever means you want with the square button (alphabetical, album, and month imported) and adjust titles to get the desired results if it's not perfect.

Do you know what types of tags work? I've got several thousand songs and it would absolutely SUCK if they weren't sortable at least by artist/album!

I use mediatomb as my media server, and it sorts and groups by genre, artist, date, title, filename, etc.

If you have to use Windows, then TVversity does all that as well.

I use a Mac most of the time but it's a hackintosh so I boot into Windows some of the time, too. That's part of the reason I'd like my media stored locally on the PS3 - that way I don't need to worry about which OS is booted up. I did some poking around and it looks like ID3 tags are supported on the PS3. I'll give it a whirl when I get home.

If they look good when you get on the media server from the PS3, then it should be fine when you download them.
