Palin spends $150K of campaign money on... clothes

Spending records filed with the Federal Election Commission and obtained by Politico show the RNC paid for "campaign accessories" from upscale department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, where nearly $50,000 was spent, Neiman Marcus, $75,000, and $4,700 for hair and makeup.

"The problem with this for the campaign," explains Politico Chief Political Writer Mike Allen, "is it's the kind of thing that can stick in people's minds. At a time when they're cutting back on their own spending, they see a candidate looking extravagant."

Ahhh Palin, campaign is in the shitter - let's go shopping! Couldn't she have spent at least some of that money on a subscription to the Washington Post?

Barring special interests, how could anyone who donated to the RNC avoid feeling like a sucker after reading this story.

I'm tempted to know what Joe the plumber thinks of how the RNC spent his hard-earned (after all JTP did donate a c-note to McCain's campaign). But seeing as how JTP is spending his money on campaign donation luxuries while owing back-taxes, and looks to be voting against the guy who wants to give him a taxcut because he doesn't understand the difference between revenue and profit, I'm not sure Joe the chump would grasp the connection.

$150K to put lipstick on a pig, eh?
What a shame. What a poor use of money; She still looks like ass.

Oh well. Hopefully another 2 weeks of looking at that face.

Another absurd post complete with all the usual hate, it just spews endlessly one board at a time. Obama raised $150 million last month so I guess all those commercials and whatever the hell he did with all that money, wasn't a waste? And the money Palin spent wasn't taxpayer money, it's not that crazy to think that they want to have a variety of clothes. If she went around with the same 4 outfits everyone would be on here postings about how cheap she is to not buy decent clothes. Why not talk about something relevant instead of boring Entertainment Tonight trivia?

There's a difference between four outfits and 150k worth. I'm sure that the hard-working people that have contributed to the Republican ticket wouldn't be too happy that she spent that much on clothes. Besides, it looks like she got ripped off since all the outfits look the same anyway.

I have to (mildly) agree. I'm not sure criticism of this isn't veiled sexism. It wouldn't really be a surprise to hear that John McCain spent $150k on clothing and accessories throughout the campaign, would it?

You know sometimes I wonder, what if these people actualy spent their money on something good. These jack offs are raising over $100 million and we have people that cant even eat a meal every day in our own country. You want to know why other people hate our country and why our government is in the sh*tter. Things like this

Sexism? She just spent 150k on clothes! These are the same people that are running with a populist message. Even if she got 30 outfits at $1000 a piece (and that's a huge number as it is), that only runs up to 30k! Where the hell was she shopping at? It's like she got back to the lower 48 and discovered Chanel, Louis V, and all that other over-priced garbage.

It probably wasn't but she could've put a stop to it. Can you imagine the good will and votes they would've bought if the said, "We're forgoing new clothes for the campaign and in turn we're going to pay off one mortgage for one lucky registered Republican." Obama and his boys would've crapped their pants.

And then laughed as the RNC and campaign managers were sent to jail for bribery.

I'm not saying it's not extravagant. I do agree there's a disconnect between calling yourself "a hockey mom" and buying from Saks Fifth Avenue. But there is no possible way a man would be criticized as much as she is.

I would be a bit surprised but then you are comparing over a year to what two months?

If she wanted to identify with Joe Six Pack/Plumber/Whitey/Whatever, she would have spent $35 at Steve and Barry's on three "University of Miami Hurricanes" sweatshirts, a pair of white mismatched Starburys, and oversize "relaxed fit" jeans.

Minor research shows his campaign spent over $6k for his suit for his speech at the Denver convention.

I'm sure more will come out in the next few days.

I get what you're saying Mike23. It's not good, but I wouldn't doubt that the male candidates now or in the past have spent similar amounts of money on clothing (and makeup, it's not like they don't wear any). I'm sure the suits they wear aren't cheap. It's just that nobody tried to find out because the stereotype is for women, not men (though generally the fashion industry exploits women with more overpriced shit than men).

Though her "hockey mom" and "we've always been middle class" does make it particularly hilarious, male candidates have said similar things.

Man or woman. Gender plays no issue on how I feel about someone spending 150 thousand dollars on clothes.

Palin said she can better relate to the middle-class. This just further proves she cannot.

I appreciate that you contribute to the versus forums.

Really. Seriously. I like people who disagree with me. No joke.

But for all the reactions you have, I don't think I've ever seen a single post of yours with something resembling a coherent argument. The way you phrase things just tends to kind of upchuck these hyperactive feelings of conservative resentment. It's not that you *don't* have a coherent argument, but that, like a slidecage post, it's just too much effort to sift through your unformatted ranting to want to search for it.

You ought to really read the thread and react to it better. I like for people to disagree, but I can't read one of your posts without experiencing some of the dizzy spinning infuriated logic you must wrangle with to come up with your ideas. In short, your posts are a fucking pain in the ass to read. Learn to form more legible sentences.
I think she saw a Nordstrom's for the first time in her life and just went buckwild.
lol, but no. I saw it on the news and they said it was at Saks 5th Ave & Neiman Marcus.

honestly dont care. its just another example of a politician lying but, curious how a rnc donator would feel if he knew his donations were going towards this.

"Hey, at least they aren't blowing $110K on the Harlem Globetrotters."

There's a difference between advertising spending and just buying clothes. I'd expect them to spend money on ads, millions worth even, but 150 grand on clothes alone?

God damn.....

Neiman Marcus has a lot of ridiculous things, but I could spend a hell of a lot less than what they spent on Palin there and come up with a way better wardrobe. With the shit she wears you'd think she shops at Walmart. If you got the cash, Neiman Marcus has some good deals with their sales. Got a designer dress for about $150 there on clearance; incredible design and workmanship you couldn't find at a Macy's or whatever, and they exchanged it no questions asked when I wanted a smaller size, even though it was an online purchase.

That shit makes Brooks Brothers sound like Big Lots, mang.

My dad buys suits from Brooks Brothers because he's a big cheese (and he lives pretty frugally otherwise except for his cars), they cost a hell of a lot more than $150 an outfit. And that $150 was probably the second-or-third biggest outfit purchase I ever had in my life, there's a reason why I'm on this forum. But I loved the design and I couldn't pass it up as a once-in-a-great-while splurge.

For whatever reason I got caught up watching "The View" today. And the dumb blonde one Hasselback made that argument about Obama spending a lot of peoples money on commercials. It was quickly pointed out the money was donated to him by those people for that exact purpose and she went home feeling nothing but shame afterwards. (I hope.)

To be fair, I needed to show the shoes of the elitest:
Those look like the well-worn shoes of a community organizer.

Yeah I think there is some middle-ground between McCain's Ferragamo loafers and Obama's thrift-shop specials.

Perhaps the RNC figures if they doll her up enough, they can bank on the MILF stereotype come election day (I don't get it either, but it's big on Cafepress).

I don't watch The View but from the couple clips they had and the stories it sounds like Joy Behar's the dumb bitch, not Hasselback
