Hello. I am trying to send files between 2 of my computers. I have a Laptop (which is my primary computer ) and a Desktop. I have them both hooked up to my Linksys WRT54G router. Laptop is Vista, while the Desktop is XP.

I'm just trying to send music from one computer to the other over the network. I read some online how to guides and nothing I have done so far worked. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chris

I just got a new PC with Vista and wrestled with file-sharing between it and my XP pro PC for a couple days. You don't provide a lot of detail so I'll just relay my issue and resolution. I had a folder on Vista shared as expected and I could view the shared directory and files on my XP computer but I could not copy them into my Vista share folder. I did everything on my Vista system but it kept preventing me from writing to my shared folders telling me I did not have permission.
Well, despite the error reported by Vista the issue was actually with my XP share folder. Even though I had right clicked on my XP folder and shared it, that was not sufficient for Vista. File sharing should have been much simpler...
Here's what I did to fix it and allow me to freely copy files between my two systems:
On the XP system:

1. Open Windows Explorer and go into Folder Options from the Tools menu.
2. Under the View tab, uncheck "Use simple file sharing" in the Advanced Settings and click OK.
3. Right click on your Shared folder and select "Sharing and Security..."
4. Under the Security tab make sure that the user "Everyone" has the expected permissions on that folder to perform the desired tasks such as "Read & Execute", "Modify", etc...

Hope that helps.

Also, make sure that you don't have any software firewalls (like the built in windows firewalls) blocking the ports necessary for file sharing.
