I started my pc and nothing is on it except my wallpaper. is it a virus? because it was working fine before i turned it off. i have no start up or desktop icon, but when i press alt ctrl and delete and click on new task, everything is fine. i just have a blank screen. I tried switching account and the same thing happens. I go to control menu and click on task and menu bar and it wont even load. It happened to my brother girlfriend too. Im so sad that can anyone help me or tell me what the problem is?

looks like you stopped your explorer. just restart your comp.

edit: oh. it happens when you start your comp. i dunno.

That happened to me a while back on my laptop. It did it for several times and then stopped after I did a chkdsk, I'm not sure if that did anything or if it just fixed itself after a few reboots.

Try booting into Safe Mode (press F8 as the machine boots prior to Windows) and attempt to run a system restore to a few days ago (start->programs->acessories->system tools->system restore). You might also want to see if you can run virus/spyware scans while in Safe Mode.

If those don't work, you can try recovery discs if your computer has them/can use them to restore Windows without a full format. But if you don't, then the only real option afterwards is a full format. If you can get into Safe Mode, you can back up your information while in there, and then do the format, thereby saving your files.

It does sound like a virus, though. I've seen this many times and usually it's corruption in Windows caused by a virus. But try the safe mode options first.

That's what I will suggest also. Restoring XP to a previous state may help you get around a bit, enough to fix the problem such as drivers or system file errors. Virus scan is also a must to eliminate possible causes.

But you dont need to reformat XP right away if window files are messed up and restoring didn't work (assuming no viruses). You can simply insert the XP CD and boot from it to reinstall Windows. I used to do that to client computers and the process often fixes the problems with Windows. It's nice to get your Windows running again so you can backup important files thru CD/DVD burning before you do a clean reformat.
