CAGiversary!
Big News Network.com Tuesday 8th February, 2005

The U.S. military is to beam its own news coverage to millions of Americans.

Moving on from its phase of embedding journalists, or as some would say, 'a policy of restricting and contolling the flow of information,' the Pentagon will now produce and disseminate the news itself. It will be beamed to the public at no charge. The servic will emanate from what is known as the Pentagon Channel, an internal public relations television unit within the Department of Defense. It was set up nine months ago.

The government-run TV service will be channeled to the public through EchoStar Communication's Dish Network which will offer the Pentagon Channel to its more than 11 million viewers on a no-cost basis. Programming will appear on the network's public interest channels and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Kinda like the Nazis used to do, and what the North Koreans are currently doing. What's weird is that I thought they already had Fox News doing this for them. :whistle2:k

Just think - you're tax dollars are paying for Government propaganda to the American masses through state-run television. I hope Sen. Kennedy gets that "Stop Government Propaganda Act" passed soon.

Can't I go one day without someone saying bush=nazi or liberal=communist/terrorist supporter? That's all I ask, just one day, 24 hours, 1440 minutes.

Yes the stereotypical views of the political parties get kind of old. With the exception of hollywood liberals, they're too kooky not to give up on.

I didn't say Bush was a Nazi. I said the pentagon is copying the tactics used by the Nazis with media control and propaganda.

Why didn't you say Bush=North Korea from my first post as well?

If it makes everyone happy, I'll change that to say: Just like the slimy alien lizards in V: The Miniseries.

I was complaining about simplistic stereotypes, therefore comparing bush to something no one compares him to would miss the point. References to bush, republicans, pentagon, anything to do with the current administration as nazis is ridiculous. The u.s. is not going to become fascist, dictatorship, nazi like or anything on that idea. The level of democracy might change, crimes may be committed under that democracy, but there is nothing that will change the democratic nature of this country (I know you didn't mentiont here, just expanding on it a bit). If it does change in that manner, it won't be due to something that is currently in place.

Someone here hasn't read their history and has no idea how quickly a democratic country can become a military dictatorship. Democracy is a fragile thing that needs to be constantly protected or it can crumble VERY quickly. Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

So, do you believe the u.s. is on it's way to becoming a dictatorship? I know history, but what the u.s. is currently doing will not lead to a dictatorship.

You said "kinda like the Nazis used to do..." however you rephrase it that's still a comparison to our government being like the Nazis. Open a history book or two because last I checked starting a government sponsered network that airs mikitary news to a fraction of all the country's TV viewers is nothing compared to the efforts the Nazis went to produce their BS and propoganda. Basically anyone can start a TV network in America provided they have the resources, and showing it 11 million Echostar consumers is hardly an iron fist of media control.
So a government propaganda channel doesn't concern you in the least?
No, because unlike the fascists dictoatorhsips you and EZB seem so apt to reference, you don't have to watch it. It's far from the only news source we have available to us, in fact it's just another newsource with a politcial agenda, there's dozens of others out there and at least this one is seemingly upfront about it. Perhaps if the governemnt puts some Goebbels-like crap on there, then I may agrre with you two, but til then I'll keep chalking it up as far reaching comparisons and conspiracies.

Government propoganda channel?

We already have PBS and NPR. We have the public school system that is as slanted to the left as you can imagine. We have state universities that employ the likes of Ward Churchill and you're worried that a channel designed to be beamed to Pentagon employees and the troops is picked up by satellite providers?

Only to those who think that Fox News is actually 'Fair and Balanced'

Yeah, like that damn Sesame Street. They're trying to subvert our children!

I read somewhere too that Bush is slashing funding for PBS and NPR, and those media outlets might have to shut down. I can't remember where I saw it, though.
So a government propaganda channel doesn't concern you in the least?
It concerns me in its ability to create more conservative support, but I'm not an alarmist who thinks this is the beginning of the end.

Can't I get one day where this administration doesn't beg that very comparison?

Its the same way when there's a democrat in the white house. As soon as that happens its always, "we're only one step away from a communism or socialism". I realize we need to keep our government in check but I do get tired of everyone always looking for the worst in the current administration and comparing it to the most extreme.

Also as far as our country being a military dictatorship it would be a lot more difficult than you would think. One of the biggest differences is that the militaary is broken into 4 seperate branches. It would be very difficult to get all 4 branches behind any action/occupation against our own country/citizens.

Its not like they are forcing you to watch it. The only thing that bothers me is that they are using tax money when they should get advertisers to pay for the channel.

Again, this was a service that was being broadcast internally to the Pentagon and the armed forces. It's an I-net program like most major corporations have. Morgan Stanley had their own internal TV network and programming as I'm sure Merril Lynch, Smith Barney, GM, Citibank, Ford, Wal Mart, Microsoft and countless others do.

For whatever reason satellite providers asked to pick it up. This programming would be made and distributed anyways to the few million in the armed services. Making it available to the civillian market isn't costing you anything more.

The satellite providers picked it up, but I'm sure it ain't for free. Like every other channel, there has to be a cost associated with providing it to the satellite providers.

Nothing new here, the government already uses your taxes to broadcast drug propaganda commercials, and fund propaganda websites (see Truevibe.com).

There's some movie where everybody is aliens disguised as humans - you had to put on some special glasses to see them. I forget what it was called - was that it?
