Persona 3 or 4, Which should I play first?

CAGiversary!
After pick up Demon Survivor on DS I find Shin Megami Tensei universe interesting so I bought Persona 3 FES and 4. Now for maxium enjoyment, which should I play first? Do I need playing 3 to understand 4?

If you can wait, play P3 for PSP, then 4. If you can't, play FES then 4. The improvements in 4 make it harder to go back to 3, but 3 Portable will be better than FES.

4 has some gameplay enhancements, so if you play it first you're going to find playing 3 frustrating and/or annoying at points. However, plot-wise, you don't need to play 3 to understand 4.

it depends, 3 is harder than 4 but I was able to get 110 hours on the original Persona 3 (no FES) while Persona 4 only took me about 70-80hrs with the full ending.

I seriously doubt that. At most, it's going to be the same game just with an option of going female as MC. It's also cut down in terms of navigation with everything now being handed to you, outside of Tartarus that is, although this is more based on preference than anything else.

But the most important thing, The Answer won't be included. Sure it wasn't included the first time around, but the fact that you're missing story sucks. Then again, if he has FES he can just always play Answer there.

To answer your question OP, play 3 then 4. Playing 4 first won't let 3 feel as great as it's suppose to and if you move up from 3 to 4, you're appreciate the improvements.

The biggest difference is that you can control your party now in Persona 3 Portable.

Just another matter of preference. Doesn't make it better than FES and is essentially the same game with the epilogue removed in favor of altered Social Links.

Exactly. This is the feature that makes it hard to go back.

You can go back to having CPU controlling your party in P3P. The game supposed to be rebalanced for manual control so we will see how that works. There is also 5 level of difficulty you can chose

I played Persona 4 before 3 and not having control of my entire party drove me nuts (it does in most games). So if you're doing it now, I would play 3 first, but if you can wait until the PSP version it won't matter as much.

I agree with this assessment.
In terms of understanding, though, it doesn't matter playing 3 or 4 first.
