Persona 3 Portable-does it matter which gender I pick?

Never played a Persona game before, and I'm starting P3P. I'd normally go with the girl, but it suggests picking the guy if you're new to the game. I know there are some differences, but do they matter for a first time player?
 
I played through P3P my first time as the girl, and I didn't feel like I was worse off for it. The big changes are the social links (if you don't know what social links are...by interacting with various people, you become closer to them, which allows you to make more powerful personas...it's all explained in game). If it's your first time though, you won't notice that they're different, they'll just be normal to you. The main plot points are identical, just gender-swapped.
 
Thanks! I picked the girl and I'm glad to know I'm not screwing myself over.

I'm super curious how different it looks from the Playstation 2 versions...guess it's missing most of the animated cut scenes (although there's a ton of voice and lots of still images that look good) and I guess the school used to be in 3D, and now you just click on stuff to interact. Considering the 3D isn't very good, and I don't much like messing with NPCs in games (boooooring) I probably prefer it this way, though the extra animated scenes would be cool (two UMDs!)
