I got an email about the Sony rewards program ending. You can no longer earn points for it and your points expire the end of the year. This sucks. Is this why PlayStation Stars hasn't been working for like 2 weeks? Does anyone have details about what Sony is planning on doing next or is there no next?

I was going to wait for a sale, but caved and bought Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.

Really great game so far. The original version of SMT5 was the game I was most hyped about for years, but when it finally came out on Switch, I couldn't get more than a couple of hours into it because of how poorly it ran on the Switch. Playing it now at 60fps is so nice.
I got the Switch original at launch and never played it. :ROFLMAO: I also got the new one right away since I didn't want to miss out on the steelbook and I had managed to get in on the Amazon price error a while back, so I saved a little bit. It's cool having the Switch special edition and the PS5 steelbook for the collection. I heard Vengeance runs almost as poorly on Switch as the original release did, so thank god for multiplatform this time.

The thing most people don't get is that SMT V simply isn't very good. Irregardless of any previous Switch performance issues.

I do like this game a bit. I want to like this game. But it's hard seeing it get overrated in reviews continually across the board, and in discussions, when I know the game isn't that great of a jrpg. The entire public (reception) seems to think the game is much better than it is. There are at least 30 other recent and previous-gen, long-winded JRPGs I would recommend playing before this one. I def would not recommend anyone spend $60 on it. I played 20 hours of it on the Switch when it originally released in 2021 and the gameplay was a slog. Wasn't even bothered by any performance issues. It's not great, and it will receive price drops. It is nowhere near the realm of needing to play it on day1.

We can have two thoughts in our heads at the same time. Something can be "meh good" and still be vastly overrated. A person probably knows by now whether this is their type of game or not. But all the marketing reviews and images I've seen are completely unrecognizable from the many hours of gameplay I've experienced where you spend the whole time traversing an endless desert. Mostly filled with random encounters, tedious / fetch / kill quests, and grinding. There is not much identity or heart to SMT V. Maybe it gets better eventually, but how long does a game get, to be properly evaluated?

Hopefully that saves someone $60 for the time being.

I got it when it came down in price on Switch and haven't touched it and likely will do the same for the PS5 and wait for it to drop and not touch it. I've heard the newer story is decent enough and the new mechanics streamline a lot of the original, so I'm not touching the original and will play the upgraded one in the future. It is bound to see price drops for sure. If I was a gambling man I say it would be $40 by September or so.

Feels like Sony just started the rewards program.

And I think that is the difference with SMT V: Vengeance, is that there are a lot of quality of life changes in the new version. It seems like it’s almost a universal theme across all the reviews is that this is a much improved game compared to the original. And that’s why I bought it (on Series X) and while I haven’t played the original, I can say without question that I’ve been absolutely loving the game.

So it may be an important distinction to note that this isn’t the same exact game simply ported to other platforms. Guess all I’m saying is that I don’t know if I’d write it off based purely on the original. It’s definitely one of my favorite games so far this year.

Of course, FWIW, two people can have entirely different valid opinions on a game. What one person hates, another may love. :)

Cookie Cutter isn't very good IMHO. It's also not a good Metroidvania IMHO other than some explorable areas. It's all boring arenas with an okay fight system, but if that's the case you have Guacamelee games which are likely better. I gave it up on PC. Also have my review somewhere in the Steam forum.

@flybrione and fellow metroidvania enjoyers! Cookie Cutter just hit my buy price of $4.99. Mostly positive reviews on this one. Thought it was worth a shout.

Thanks I already have that one for XSX. I got it for cheap from AR when that was still a thing.
I was thinking about playing it recently so thanks for the reminder. I decided to played Another Crab's Treasure instead which was excellent.

i think this is following the end of universal rewards. sony rewards was primarily for sony credit cards and movies, so when one company ends a rewards program, others tend to follow. you can still earn points with the sony or playstation credit card until the end. i was wondering why there was no place to redeem ticket stubs to the new bad boys movie, this explains it.

Agreed, Guacamelee is indeed excellent and a classic. I'm currently playing F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch and Prince of Persia The Lost Crown and both are quality games.

In other news, Dredge is excellent. I was really hoping that the DLC would be on sale this week but I'll probably end up picking it at full price regardless.

Nah. If you are someone who loves a good meaty, challenging & tactical battle system in a jrpg, then it simply does not get better than SMTV. It’s the SMT formula fine-tuned to perfection. People complain about the performance but ultimately it’s a turn-based game so who cares. People hate the barebones story, but after the bloated Persona games with their mopey teenagers, deeply irritating talking animals and anime waifus… SMTV is a breath of fresh air. I love that the game barely has a story. You are just tossed in some maps, you hunt and recruit and fuse demons, and occasionally fight badass bosses while listening to that amazing soundtrack. It’s all about the vibes man.

That being said I am not a fan of this rerelease. I would’ve much preferred an actual sequel or spin-off like SMT IV got.

It's a beautiful thing. They're going to sell sooo many copies of this.

I'm going to stream some Daxter and Ghosthunter if you want to see them in action.

Edit: Here's the video for Daxter and Ghosthunter. Daxter still holds up very well and is still very fun. They've remapped the R1/L1 camera controls to the right stick and inverted them, which are the opposite of what the R1/L1 controls do on the controller. It gives out a lot of trophies if you're into that. Ghosthunter is from the team that made Primal and seems like an all right time, though its attempt at third-person shooter controls are a little weird for a game released in 2003 before RE4, Gears of War, and Uncharted figured out the right ways to do that. The main character is voiced by Rob Paulsen, who voiced Raphael in the original TMNT cartoon and uses that same voice for this spooky shooter MC.

I did the same thing, lol. Paid full price for the switch steelbook edition and never got around to playing it and then bought the PS5 steelbook edition for full price (well I did use my $5 monthly cert at Gamestop so that's something).

I will be playing the PS5 version at some point. I really like both of the steelbooks and I am a sucker for those.

I didn't get the second steel book but it is neat looking.

Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is out now for $19.99:

I'm streaming the game from near the beginning if you want to see it in action.

Edit: Here's the archive. They've done some good work to this game to make it run well and look sharp at 4K, which is nice. They have a great art gallery with more info on the development of the game with a lot of art and some videos of it that add some nice context to how the game came to be from one of the two devs of Rayman 2.

Dell has Playstation Portal available if you have been building up Dell Rewards Credits or Arena Rewards Points.

Got an email from Sony rewards today in regards to the end of their rewards program. They auto completed the “movie buff” pass for me, which got me a free movie (I picked Hook from the very short list). So check your emails if you were part of that rewards program.

On a related note, I had definitely completed that pass before and had at least one reward coming. I didn’t redeem anything at the time because the list was so lacking. Now I can’t figure out where to go to see if I still have a free movie coming or not. Anyone able to point me in the right direction on that? TIA

I’d say it was a good month if Borderlands 3 included dlc, but with just the standard copy it makes it a pretty meh month. I was looking to switch my physical copy to digital, but I’m hoping I don’t get locked out of digital from the ps5 upgrade like I did with Fallout 4 when I upgraded using my physical copy. 🤞

Pretty awful month especially since the NHL Playoffs are done. Among Us is nothing really and Borderlands 3 is OK. I'll still claim NHL and Among Us, but on the very off chance I want to play either, guess it will be good to have it.
