Police: Dad used 9-year-old daughter as 'designated driver' w\VIDEO!

Saw this video earlier at work. A few co-workers didn't see much wrong in it saying "What else should he have done? At least he didn't drive." thinking his behaviour was at least little responsible, none of them parents mind you. I was like "wha wha whaaaaa!?!?!" So I spoke up saying "What do you mean, What he should've done? He shouldn't have been piss drunk in the first place. And putting his 9 year old daughter behind the wheel is beyond dumb." They all agreed with me but I couldn't believe I had to explain to them why what he did was wrong. I didn't even touch on what kind of impact his irresponsible drunken behaviour will have on his daughter.

That's the response I came to as a sarcastic joke, but to actually be serious about that, yikes... Then again there are a lot of kids having kids these days...

I'm not disagreeing with you, he definitely shouldn't force her to drive him around while he's drunk, but this really isn't THAT big of a deal. In most parts of the country where it's not extremely crowded, driving long before you get your license is not uncommon. And for the most part, a lot of cops don't even care. Hell, my cousin knew how to drive stick by the time he was 10. When you spend most of your life legally driving ATVs, snowmobiles, tractors and dirt bikes, it's not that big of a deal to jump to driving a car.
What A_D said. I learned how to drive a truck when I was 12-13 (lived in the middle of the sticks). It isn't that big of a deal imo.
Driving in the middle of the sticks is much different then driving on a main road with other cars coming and going. What your saying is just sheer stupidity.

With that said I remember my parents letting me sit in their laps to "drive" but only on the backroads and up our drive way. They always had full control tho. To put your child in the drivers seat is asking for the worst. When your young you do not have the reflexes nor brain funtion to make quick choices. Also she was in a freaking booster seat do you think she could really see all she needed to and be able to touch the pedals like needed.

And if this happened in one of those parts of the country, it wouldn't be 'as big a deal'. It didn't. It happened in Detroit. So we have a man who not only considers it appropriate to get piss-drunk with his 9 year old around, but to make her drive him around in that state through a major metropolitian area. At 3 am.

I hope they get this girl permanently in the care of someone responsible ASAP.

Did you read the entire story? The fact that he let her drive isn't the point. It's not like this was a controlled driving lesson during the day. He's drunk off his ass, then letting his daughter drive him around very late at night... yeah, no big deal.

If we were talkin Whiskey Tango folk sure I'd say fine/normal, but that seemed far from the case here... If I remember correctly too a van that size isn't exactly physically the best fit for a short 9 yr old...

Also, Am I really THAT old there's no commentary on the van's paint job??

It's definitely not the smartest thing to do, but I have a feeling the nine year old would have the better reflexes and brain function than the drunk-off-your-ass guy. If the Dad was driving maybe both of them would be dead--certainly an improvement over the current situation?

^Oh yeah definitely an improvement... Forcing a 9 yr old daughter to cart around her drunk fat ass dad around at 3am then had to be done... Wow, no wonder this place is going to the shitter...

Well it is. Being dead is serious yo'

Also you don't know, maybe the daughter will grow up with hella good skill sets once the baggage Dad is out of the picture. Build connections with the police, land an internship, and be on her way to a nice life.

^Oh yeah, definitely totally yeah...

Possible 15 years seems a little excessive for being stupid. Sure, give his kid to a relative or something but don't see why they would jail him for that long. Having a kid drive isn't that big of a deal, I drove by myself at 10 albeit not in Detroit. Definitely a dangerous situation but yeah, sentence seems stupid.

It wasn't for being stupid it was for child endangerment.
