I saw this earlier, but I think it's his thumb. However, at the press briefing today, Scott McClellan refused to say what happened, only mumbling "I refuse to dignify that question". If it was totally false, why didn't he just come out and say so?

No way it was his thumb, try making a similar shape out of your hand by raising your thumb. There's a large area on the right of his hand, and a smaller one of the left. While the middle finger would fit perfectly, raising you index finger may also create a similar shape. I would assume it's one of those two.

PS--looks like his thumb to me too; it looks like the space on the left of the finger is his knuckles from his fingers wrapping around because the space on the right looks more like the main knuckles jutting out than the ring and pinkie fingers
 
I really can't see any way that can be his thumb, unless he has some sort of giant, double-jointed alien thumb. It COULD be his index finger, though, doing some sort of 'we're number 1' thing.
 
thats why i like bush, remember the time he called some one an asshole and got caught. he does what i think i would do if i were president. fuck the press.

You're not looking at the back of his hand. You're looking at the side. Take your right hand, and turn in 90 degrees with your thumb sticking up in the air. The bright spot on the right are the knuckles. There's an ever-so-slight gap between the index finger curling around the left and his thumb.

To be honest, this is just going to be one of those things where people will see different things.

Looking at it after reading your post I'm pretty sure he's raising his index finger. That's way to thin and long to be a thumb, but tilt the hand a bit and that fits a #1 index finger perfectly. .

Now that I've slept on it, I can see the index finger, too, as in the #1 sign.

It's his thumb. Watch the clip when he's bringing his hand down. Clearly a thumb. Still funny though.
 
That's his index finger. I didn't even need to crack out the video editing software for that one.
